Hakuba vs Otari
TJ OZ replied to muikabochi's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Cortina can suck it in good. Overall Happo and 47 can claim it though. There are no friends on a powder day even between towns. -
You are very close to Goryu and Iimori which are linked. I am sure you will be very happy there to start your holiday and you can venture further up the mountain once you have built your confidence. Its a good idea to get some lessons also. Great new outdoor onsen at Phoenix Wing too which you can book with your GF

It wouldn't surprise me if BM comes back with another "best ever" call after today. Unbelievable conditions at the moment. -

I was at 47 also on the 6th. 10 people at the gondie when it opened. It was epic deep snow with no one around. I will rate it in the best 10 days. -
Happo Hakuba really busy

Looking like another big one rolling in on Tuesday so hopefully you will cop some then Muikabochi. The next system should really fill up the tree areas here. -

Chuo Taxi option is your best bet. You can book it now and not worry about it any further. You may get the bonus of sitting next to Panhead Pete who will give you a good rundown of the area. The price is standard whether there is 1 or 10 people in the van. Roughly 13000 yen from Narita to your hotel in Hakuba. Comfortable ride with a couple of stops along the way at the service centers. Traffic might be heavy especially if it is dumping but then that's a good thing.

Tokyo Ski Movie Premiere Halloween...
TJ OZ replied to sand's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
I love watching ski and snowboard movies on the big screen. Gets the heart pumping for the upcoming season. I'm too far away to take up the offer but thanks for putting them up. -
Hakuba is a great spot but I am biased. Just make sure you stay somewhere that can give you all the information on whats going on and make it easy for you to get there. If you can talk directly with the hotel owners then it is a good start. Food is one of the big things for me. Everynight can be a great experience in Hakuba. During the day everything that Stemik mentioned plus onsen and massage. You can also take the lifts up and down Happo One which on a clear day has the most magnificent views. Put on extra layers of clothes though. There are a few hidden gems here as well but they won't

The typhoon has just started in Hakuba. Looks like a direct line for us so plenty of rain no doubt over the next 24hrs. I was in Tokyo for one a few years ago and it got pretty nasty so it will be interesting to see what the mountains do to the wind. Anyone in Toyama for the main brunt of it?

Early December Ski Trip
TJ OZ replied to logan's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
If you have to ski here in Early December then just wait until you can see where it has snowed the most and go there. You will have no problems booking everything a day before you go. -
Another vote for Hakuba but everyone knew that. Nine resort areas in the valley means you can find some space. Plenty of accommodation options for under 10000 yen. Good places for around 5000 yen + meals + lift tickets. I know nothing about the apres scene so can't help you there. Weeell, may be a little but happy to not assist. Snow, eat and drink as good as you can. That's what I know.
