Sugadaira in Nagano
merryJim replied to echineko's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
I like it. The place we have been to twice is central and really relaxed. It sure was cold as well, probably the coldest I have experienced - and I was surprised it was so relatively near to Nagano as well. We'll be back there next season for sure. -
Vid cam - dvd, hdd or tape
merryJim replied to pie-eater's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
This is interesting, I was wondering about buying a camera in the near future. Thanks. How long do you reckon it will be before those new technologies catch up with the minidv tape? -
Parking near Happo
merryJim replied to HoTRoD's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Yes the ski jump place is where I go. There's a car park right by the lifts down there (before the ski jump) but it is quite small. -
Never heard of that top one!

Summer flights (+ why is tax so different?)
merryJim replied to rach's topic in General off-topic discussions
That sounds like they have made a mistake. The tax numbers change daily I believe but only slightly because of exchange rates. I'd call again and get a different person to give you a quote. They're all pretty much the same though in my experience. -
Nihonjin to shite umarete yokatta!
merryJim replied to muikabochi's topic in General off-topic discussions
Just how I feel daver. I find it quite annoying, especially when someone says that kind of thing in front of me. How to respond?! -
Pizza is such a great thing. Praise be to pizzas! Had a great homemade one last night. Triple (maybe quadruple) toppings - whatever, a ton of toppings - and my own base.

How about world politics and discussions on where Japan and your country stand on them and with each other. The word "Gaijin" and other such issues.

brit-gob - when was it you have been there? -
Good friend back home is an air stewardess. She says that they only do a "deep clean" about once a month on the aircraft that she works on. And even that ain't too deep. She has become increasingly paranoid about cleanliness. Her top tips are - don't put the blanket on your face, don't put your head back on the headrest, don't eat the food unless it is mad hot and totally sealed, etc, etc..... I'm surprised she has lasted as long as she has!

100's of air hostesses for India Airlines have been banned for flying because they are "too fat" according to the BBC news just now. (I can think of a few other airlines who could do that ) I thought I would just share.

Beer in the Onsen
merryJim replied to Mantas's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
I've asked a few of my colleagues and they pretty all much said there they wouldn't take beer in with them and have never seen - "beer after an onsen". Do the monkeys have a beer after I wonder? -
I just read an interesting review of this place on here and wondered if many people on here had been. I am tempted to go and give this region a try as I have never been there.

I've got that feeling all to come! Hope all are well.

Beer in the Onsen
merryJim replied to Mantas's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
I would guess no as I have never seen it happen and they hardly have machines selling it in there. There are usually signs saying don't enter after drinking alcohol as well I think. -
"I was shocked to hear that 175,000 turkeys were destroyed at Bernard Matthews farm in Suffolk. I had no idea that real birds were involved at any point in the manufacture of his products".

I'm sure they'd let you in Niseko CB They might even not allow Japanese people there.

Thank you thank you thank you It's all rather overwhelming as the news sinks in proper! Looking forward to it all though.

merryJim replied to excited's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
7 at the moment, hope to be up to 9 by next week (Appi). It might end there though.
