Snowboarders - failed skiers
Raury replied to a topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
mogski, due to a problem with my ankles (read: severe misalignment) that went unattended for 30 years, I now have about 20-30mm inward lateral movement in my knees. The ligaments that run down the inside of each knee are very loose. The likelihood of bending the knees is very high if they are on separate planks, and I am unable to resist that movement, which makes skiing a doubtful excercise anyway. On one plank, they might twist a bit, but they cannot go in opposite directions as the plank hold the ends together. Notice how easy it is to bend someones arms behind their back if t -

off topic: single, married, divorced?
Raury replied to ollie's topic in General off-topic discussions
was single, then married, then divorced and now single again -
Just got back after 6 days at Falls Creek and 3 days at Charlotte Pass. The snow was great, although it did only snow for about 6 hours in that entire time. The weather was great for all but 2 days, but was fantastic for Charlotte's. Managed to damage both myself and my board, but the board is fixed and I'm getting better as days go by. The grin will not leave my face for about 4 weeks.

Skiers and snowboarders - friends?
Raury replied to a topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
My last girlfriend was a skier, and we did runs together, no probs. Sometimes I was in fornt, other times she was in front. I have friends who are telemarkers, alpine skiers, whatever, we all love the snow. I think the license thing is prety harsh, but then I have this dream of going BC to Taos (US resort that banned boarders), boarding into the village and then catch the bus out . What can they do, ban me? -
For Belle - the .AU season
Raury replied to Raury's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
If you are looking at the cams, then most of what you see is groomed. At Falls Creek, the cam called Ruined Castle looks across the bottom of an ungroomed area called Sun Valley. The cam called Cloud Nine shows a lot of ungroomed on the far side of the valley, and most of the stuff on the right of the cam is also left ungroomed. The run called Main Street is to the left of Cloud Nine cam, and runs down the side of the Towers chair (the Towers cam is the bottom of that run and you can see 2 other runs joining in.) On the Summit cam, about 40% of what you can see above the horizontal line -
The season here is off to a great start. Early falls chilled the ground off, allowing for the following snow to stick really well. The leash
Raury replied to miteyak's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
leashes are required in AU. No leash - no lift. I usually use my leash as a shoulder strap when I am walking around. Click the loose end around the other binding When I put my board down, I put one foot on the stomp pad, put the leash on other legy, strap that foot in then put my back foot in. Not too hard once you are used to it. Having had to stop a few rogue skis over the years, I don't want to be responsible for a rogue board on the mountain. -
I have a goatee and moustache. It is kept pretty short (ie about #3 cut at max). It saves heaps of time when shaving, I don't have to worry about shaving off the remains of 2 moles (that I have already mostly removed) or cutting my top lip (can you say ouch). Plus some girls like it and it makes me look closer to my age.

I know quite a few skiers that have trashed their knees, including requiring surgery. My knees have always been pretty weak and have some side to side movement and quite easily become sore and packed with fluid from pushing a shopping trolley that has dodgy wheels. Basically they sprain if twisted even a little bit. So I have always been worried about making the problem worse, and the thought of twisting them in a skiiing accident petrifies me.

Thanks frannyo, I know of quite a few people that don't like tattoos, but they see the gecko, and go "Oh, that's nice"

Toilets - non-flushers still around?
Raury replied to Freddie's topic in General off-topic discussions
Found a pic of the "long drop" at the hut in a place called Kuitpo Forest. Pretty basic. Dig a hole, stick a plastic toilet over the top. Put steel bars across so that people can't fall in. -
Great resorts in Australia/NZ
Raury replied to becky's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
As snowhaus said, check ski.com.au. They have webcams at all the major resorts, plus accomodation guides Another good site is snow.net.au. Run by a young guy called Ben. If you post the question tho', you will end up with an all in fight. Everyone has their favourite resort (mine is Falls Creek). I guess you would get that if I asked what the best resort in .jp was. Most of the resorts have their own websites. For a heap of info on Falls Creek, look at Aussie Ski Bums website If you are intending to come down, let us know and I am sure some-one willl gladly hook up -
I'd steer clear of "Skidmark", it has bad connotations in Australia. Or you just don't wear any of that brand while over here.
