    Very well researched and very informative - thanks Ippy. Like everywhere else in the real world, short term "rental" comments and viewpoints will always prove superfluous to strategies formulated in the heart and executed with the head !!

    Check your history books pie eater and see how various other independence movements treated those from within who collaborated with or supported the occupying forces; Algeria, Ireland, Israel etc. Realpolitik doesn't play out by the cricket rule book. A few genuine, heartfelt words from me are of negligible overall effect but certainly make me feel good !!! If they make any "no" voters feel bad then that's a bonus !!!

    Well I've lived through the 1979 and 2014 referenda, but at 52 I wonder if I'll see another one? As I've said before, having left Scotland for a new life in Australia some 20 years ago it isn't my direct concern any more but I've really enjoyed listening to everyone's comments on here and certainly got swept up in it all. At the end of the day, yesterday's result simply vindicated my decision to become an Aussie - and Brisbane is a lot closer to Japan than Pitlochry !!

    A very, very sad day. My heart goes out to those "Yes" voters who share the same hopes and aspirations as people in all other independent, self-governing nations. The cretins, cowards and short-term vested interest scum have held sway. PATHETIC !!!!!!

    I'm hearing you loud and clear Ippy - "love it" isn't the word. I spoke to my "Best Man" who lives in Fort Augustus and he went into his bank (not sure which one, but obviously one of the banks bleating doom and gloom for a "Yes" vote) and told them that he had banked with them since leaving school but their stance was the last straw. He withdrew all his money and parted with a "Go f@ck yourselves" to the bank teller. As you said, when people you don't expect start getting caught up - my mate has never, ever batted an eyelid at political matters before !!! GO SCOTLAND !!!

    Just had a phone conversation with an old mate who lives in the Highlands. He assured me that for the first time in living memory there is a noticeable smell of genuine fear coming from all the London parties. It's not even a case of the Nationalists smelling blood; the mood is genuine hope and expectation of all the possibilities of nationhood. It will, however, be very, very close!

    How are cyclists treated by motor vehicle drivers in Japan? My guess is that they would be very courteous..... The culture is very slowly changing here in Queensland but there are still enough truck and ute driving rednecks around to put your life in danger. There are plenty of forums warning of particularly bad roads etc. and the sheer increase in volume of cyclists and political pressure for legislative support are having a positive effect.

    19.1km/h wouldn't get you any bragging rights in Brissie Dude but at least you're out there on the bike. Unfortunately I think more and more people are on to us cyclists: eating and drinking is the hobby and cycling is the lifestyle that supports that hobby !!

    Hey Mr. Walkers, respectful, disrespectful, it's only words !! During my 1980's travel time I spent some time on a kibbutz where I remember an old Israeli fellah telling me how Scotland was a fine country of fine people but we had one problem; the English.     What a healthy debate - Ippy, I like the cut of your jib !! One aspect I'm getting from web site rhetoric is that even if there is a "No" result (ie. the sheep have it) this referendum has opened up some stark cultural realities to a new generation and no amount of devolved, federalist (call it what you like) power will put the genie back in the bottle.

    The very same. An MRI a few years back showed I had previously prolapsed discs between L2 & L3, L3 & L4, and L4 and L5, plus I had previously fractured L3 (Not all at the same time) Various probable causes but 12 years as a judoka won't have helped; and now with the advancing years there's osteo-degeneration thrown in the mix too. Bottom line is that core muscle development is uber important to maintain sporting activities.

    Still recovering from some L4 & L5 damage and am too scared to get back on the bike. This is a bummer as hitting the k's as Brissie temp's & humidity increase is an unbelievable weight loss measure. Can't seem to find middle ground either: when I'm clocking up the k's I'm careful with the diet, but when off the bike the "whatever" switch flicks to "on" and it's beer & barbie's with no limitations.

    Although I've been an Australian citizen for nigh on 20 years it's hard not to get involved in this debate as it centres around the country of my heritage, birth and upbringing. As a former card-carrying SNP member (and Rangers fan Tubby) I am firmly in the "Yes" camp. Prior to the 1979 referendum the London Government spun the macro-economic wheel to point to doom and gloom for independent little Scotland in the big wide world and sadly the majority of Scots bought the "fear of change" argument.     The beauty of the western market capitalism system is that the general focus of aggregate knowledge is the pursuit of wealth. There is currently much investment in the opportunities, perceived as being very real, which will be brought about as the Arctic ice cap continues to recede: new shipping routes, natural resource extraction etc. Are the markets wrong??? I doubt it.

    Having bought Yen at 92.95 I noticed the dollar up to 93.6-odd at Suncorp (Brissie) yesterday and back to 93.18 today. Interesting to see where it goes from here.
