Hi there flybeec, I live in Tokamachi. I find it easier to get to Yuzawa and my friends live there more than over in the Joetsu area so that's where I go more. As muika said, Nozawa is fairly easy to get to as well. If your friends have a car, it's only 40 minutes or so. Where abouts in Tokamachi will you be? It's a fairly big area now!

BTW, I am in Tokamachi between Joetsu and Yuzawa area of Niigata. I believe the earthquakes are centering around Joetsu.

After a fairly strong jolt yesterday, got woken by a stronger one this morning at 6:30 and had a few more since then, the strongest just 10 minutes ago at 5 chaku. It's all feeling a bit shaky right now.

I noticed the talk of Ueno Zoo in the other hanami thread and thought it deserved its own thread. I love animals and I used to love going to zoos, but it makes me want to shout when I see animals cooked up in tiny cages, unable to move anything like what they want to. Safari parks on the surface seem much better but I am not sure the story. I remember once going to a place in Gunma I think it was. There was a tiger there was that clearly distressed and perhaps going out of it's mind - it was pacing up and down endlessly in this tiny space. I wanted to let the poor thing out.

Great to see how it went through the season. Lets hope next time, it beats the record!

Season over round here now though still some open in Yuzawa of course but that is 45+ minutes from me.

Been out on my mountain bike the last few evenings....

Someone just called round with a flyer asking for volunteers to move snow in time for the event. It said on the flyer that my neighbourhood usually in early February has 4m of snow and this year it is 60cm. I'm going to go out and help on Wednesday
