It has since for the most part disappeared from these lower areas but snow is still falling this morning up on the mountains with it due to continue into tomorrow - we might get another coating down here as well by tomorrow morning. After that clearer and warmer weather conditions are likely on Thursday and more nice weather due over the weekend. It will be warming up again as well over the weekend with temps very possibly hitting double digits. Light snow has been falling this morning in the valley and more no doubt up there on the mountains too where I am hearing conditions are quite windy too with poor visibility in places. The resorts that are already open though seem to be unaffected and open as planned with a few more lifts running this morning at Hakuba Goryu, Hakuba Happo-one and Tsugaike Kogen. Please keep an eye on the resort specific information below as it is being updated every day. Apologies if the reports are a little later than usual at the moment - there is such a lot of information to check every morning. It will be a big help and relief to everyone once all of the resorts can be 'fully open'! Back to the snow and there has been around 5cm of fresh around base areas and resorts are reporting around 10-15cm of new snowfall this morning. The forecast tells us to expect clouds to clear by this afternoon and before it gets dark we might get some sun but it should remain cold for the day. Tomorrow should be clear and sunny with a high temperature perhaps around 5 degrees. Looking ahead a bit further, is that rain on Monday? It might well be down at base anyway as it gets slightly warmer again but as we approach Christmas it looks as if there's promise of some fresh snow. It has been a difficult start to the season for sure. Seasons are long though so a late start doesn't write the story of the whole season. Hopefully Santa might have something big up his sleeve for us! In the meantime we just need to enjoy what we have. Hope you have a good weekend wherever you are. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It's snowing! Yes, it's coming down nicely at the moment. I was just up by the base of Hakuba 47 and there was around 20cm of fresh underfoot. Less of that in the central village areas but 15cm outside my place. The snow started last night but has really turned into decent snowfall from early this morning. If it keeps on snowing like this then we can expect more lifts and courses to be open for the weekend... if it's not too windy. Snow is forecast through today and tomorrow as well with clearer skies due on Sunday. Strong winds on mountain are actually preventing Happo-one and Tsugaike Kogen to open their lifts as planned at the time of writing this report, though it looks like Hakuba Goryu are going ahead as planned. All subject to change of course. Post weekend clearer weather conditions will prevail so we want as much as possible over the next two days. --- Resorts that are currently at least part open Hakuba 47: Hakuba 47 reporting 15-20cm at base and higher up - surely more up there! The base area of Hakuba 47 base is not yet open but the top area of Goryu/47 is open. Get up there via the Hakuba Goryu gondola. 2500 yen for adults, 1350 yen for children. Good morning from Hakuba and there's more snow to report - generally resorts are reporting 15-30cm of snow from lower to upper areas, less than that since my last report at base here. With this new snowfall there is more terrain and lifts opening up from this morning. I have added the details below under each resort. It's great to see more opening up. Remember - early season things can change quickly so for the very latest if you are going best to check the official resort websites. We might get more snow down to village today though with temperatures heading to around 5 degrees it might be rain - but probably snow on the mountains. At this moment though there is even a bit of sunshine breaking through the cloud in places. Unfortunately beyond today we are looking at more settled and fine weather. 'Fine' as in a good chance of sun and clear skies, and that is due to last for most of the week by the looks of things. Still the season is going and there is snow to play in. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It's a stunner of a morning here in Hakuba. Some cloud around but lots of blue sky and bright sunshine. While it was snowing lightly on the mountains for much of yesterday, there's not as much fresh snow to report as we would have liked (though we always want more, don't we?!). Resorts generally reporting just a bit lower down and up to around 10cm in higher areas. It's good and cold at base this morning though and hopefully that sun won't warm things up too much, a high of about 4 degrees is expected later on. There is a chance of more snow tonight through tomorrow morning - it's not expected to last though and we might end up with more sunshine in the day time... should keep cold though. Today is the first day of the season for the Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field resort area and they have their '4Sen East' area open on the Mountain Side of the resort. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Yesterday morning the wind was messing about with things - happily today there's no wind problem and as far as I can tell resorts opening as planned. It's a pretty complicated picture as well actually, with more runs and lifts gradually opening up as resorts try to cope with the large number of people that are here wanting to enjoy sliding down the snow. I have seen more than a few frustrated people around in the last few days not happy with lack of clear information and at times long queues to get on lifts. To be fair to the resorts, they are generally trying to cope as best they can - this gradual arrival of snow at this late stage is not making it the easiest situation to deal with. Still, personally I wish that lift staff would insist on having people get on lifts together and not sending up a quad with for example just 1 or 2 people on it... New Year is fast approaching with lots more people arriving. Expect crowds! Try to keep smiling! This morning it's a mix of snow clouds with snow falling in places, but we are expecting a mostly cloudy day. There's even a glimpse of sunshine in places. It's keeping cold with temperatures remaining around zero and it's not due to warm up any either. Tomorrow should also remain cold with more cloudy conditions, with perhaps even some clearer skies. Some forecasts even talk of sunshine. The next snow after looks due around the evening of New Years Eve but as we head into the New Year milder conditions are likely. With the New Year just a few days away, it's certainly not great that most lower areas are either still not open or struggling. We can just hope that early January brings with it lots more snow and this start to the season is not representative of the whole season. Unfortunately there is of course nothing we can do about the weather. So let's accept it and enjoy what we can. Best advice is to head high! Take care out there and enjoy. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . A fabulously happy morning to you from Hakuba where snow is arriving in style. About 12cm here outside my place but resorts reporting some very good numbers from the slopes. Here's the numbers (of fresh snowfall) that are available: Hakuba 47 - 10cm base, 40cm upper areas Hakuba Goryu - 15cm Toomi, 20cm Iimori, 35cm upper Hakuba Cortina - 20-30cm of fresh snow I have updated what seems to be open at resorts in the areas below so please check those details out. The good news is that Hakuba Cortina are able to open today as well as Hakuba Iwatake and there are more lifts and courses at other resorts now opening up. With the snow continuing to fall and resorts keen to open up as much as possible as quickly as possible, it's a situation that will be changing rapidly. Happo-one seems to be having a problem with their website (overload?) and somewhat struggling to get clear info out but they planned to have the Skyline Number 2 pair lift and Skyline Course open from this morning. I am also hearing of issues with the Kokusai Number 1 lift this morning but it may be back up and running soon. To get up to the upper area, use either the Kita One quad lift or Gondola. Apologies for the later report this morning. There's just so much information to check (and not all of it the easiest to find either). I hope that what I'm providing this morning is a fairly clear picture of the situation. Oh for the day when every resort in the area is finally 'FULLY OPEN'! Hopefully that is now not too far off. Soon it'll be New Year and then we'll be getting on for approaching what should be peak season. The mind boggles. Generally it was a fairly cloudy day yesterday. Mostly cloudy with a few very small patches of blue sky to see here and there from time to time. But mostly cloudy. And then some rain later on. :( I've just about had my fill of writing about rain and mild conditions this season already. PLEASE start snowing! Sorry, let me regain my composure... It's cloudy this morning again, and mild again. There are some pretty cool looking low clouds hanging over the village and surrounding mountains as well early on. It looks like higher up on the slopes there are areas of poor visibility. Hakuba 47 are having to cut back a bit again today due to the lack of fresh snow and uncooperative weather conditions. As far as I can tell other resort operations are as they were this morning. So, the snowfall that we are all waiting for. It is still due to start tonight (higher up) and tomorrow, and as we get into the weekend snow and a real proper winter-like drop in temperatures is expected. Now to the good news. Higher up, snow is falling and temps are forecast to drop this morning and into tonight and it should soon be snowing down here at base too. The forecast is still looking promising for the weekend with the promise of decent snowfall along with really cold conditions particularly on Sunday. Bring it on, I say! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Sadly there were some strong winds again yesterday and I was over at Happo-one at lunchtime where lifts were affected. Can't do much about the wind. Clouds cleared somewhat in the afternoon with some sun and blue skies in the afternoon. There has been just a bit of snow since last night with resorts reporting some new cm on higher areas, just a cm here in the village. Back to the topic in the report yesterday about resorts coping with the current conditions. They're to a greater or lesser extent struggling to keep up dealing with the situation that we have - which is basically not enough snow. And wind at times further preventing some lifts from operating. There's nothing they want more than to open up all of their lifts and courses. Having a lot of people around for the New Year holidays doesn't help but of course all of these snow and wind related things can't be helped. We all dearly want have lots more snow to fall and for all of the lifts and resort areas to be open. We're just going to have to be patient and at the same time wish the resorts the best. Good, quick decision making please! And... Nature-san, get on the case please with the snow! It has been snowing lightly this morning but eased off now at base at least, though there may be some snow still falling higher up. Wind does not seem to be an issue around the resorts this morning. (The only thing that I can notice right now is that the top two Tsuga pair lifts at Tsugaike Kogen appear to be on hold due to 'weather conditions'). Currently it is hovering around 0 degrees in the village. It should be keeping cold today, and be ever so slightly milder tomorrow. Some snowfall is forecast again tomorrow night and as we enter the new year. After that, it's looking like it will be getting milder again for the first few days of January. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Morning from Hakuba where the weather is continuing to cause headaches. Windy conditions messed about with resort operations again yesterday. Happo-one were able to part open again around lunchtime but there was also some lift disruption at 47/Goryu and over at Tsugaike. And it was warm. Like 7C degrees warm at 1450m (according to Hakuba 47). I can't think of anything I want to say about that! This morning, unfortunately, Happo-one is once again not able to open due to wind conditions. Lifts at Hakuba 47 are operating slower than usual and Hakuba Goryu are warning of the wind on mountain as well (though the lifts are currently moving). The top part of the Gondola at Tsugaike Kogen is not moving at the time of writing and neither are the top Tsuga Number 1 and 2 pair lifts... hopefully the wind might calm down during the day and stop being a problem. This wind and the warmer temperatures really has people talking about spring, which in early January is just... very unsettling. I sure don't want to be writing about these things and you certainly don't want to be reading about them either. But you want me to tell it like it is, so that's what I will continue doing. I just look forward to the day when everywhere can be open as normal and we can all go about our skiing and boarding with big smiles on our faces. (I think I said that before). All that being said, there is of course fun to be had out there. Just more like spring time fun than mid-season! When will we see things shape up? Let's take a look at the forecast. I'm happy to report that there's positive stuff in there. Tomorrow things should start getting colder and there might be some fresh snow. There's no new snow to report to you this morning though I hear earlier on it was snowing very lightly higher up. Lots of blue skies around now though with just a few small clouds lingering. A fine morning weather wise, and happily keeping cold. The forecasts do have us down for snow today, so it could cloud over again any time and hopefully we will be getting snowed on later. There will be lots of New Years Eve celebrations going on tonight so while we don't want the weather to hinder those, we of course all want snow to fall.
