Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 618cm Posted on Tuesday 4th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . April has left and February has returned. Not with lots of snow yet, but the white stuff is back. It's a little dust on gray ice at the moment, but hopefully there will be a lot more over the next few days. We need it, after two days where the wind and sun really brought down the levels (as reported by some of the more honest resorts below). Again, just how well that old snow is going to bind to this fresh is an issue for anyone venturing off into the backcountry. With the thin snow cover so far, and the quick change of temperature, it's likely that there will be a hard layer persisting in the snowpack for a while, which of course means higher avalanche risk. Please be careful when the powder comes back! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 30cm Snowfall at base this season 648cm Posted on Wednesday 5th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The drifts are high, the snow is light. It's hard to tell just how much snow fell overnight around the house, with the high winds last night creating great big snow drifts right in front of the door (of course) and around the car. But it's nice, light snow today, so that digging out process went pretty painlessly. Much nicer that the heavy slop of just a few days ago (which is now gray ice under the light white). The forecast was for even higher winds today, so we're staying off the peaks - as tempting as all that fresh is. Some pretty strong gusts earlier, although it's pretty calm at the moment. Looks like the winds might have moved further north. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A small gap in the snowfall this morning; the stars came out after 10 last night, and the sun was shining this morning, even though the temperature was -9. It doesn't look like it will last, though, as the forecast is for potentially heavy snow and the sky all around has that light white look of snow in the air. Even as I'm writing this the mountains have disappeared into the snow. Luckily, though, the high winds of the past two days have faded away - it must have been plenty cold for anyone climbing yesterday. Which is all good! We can use a healthy addition to the snowpack. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 35cm Snowfall at base this season 788cm Posted on Sunday 16th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's no surprise, I guess, to tell you that it's snowing, and the wind is blowing. So much so (the latter) that Akakan's early snow report at about 8:20am showed that they're waiting to move on the lifts. Considering that Tokyo was pretty much shut off, and all the Shinkansens were stopped, it's not so unusual. At least the roads are open here and we can more or less get around. A quick note on the backcountry: with this wind, heavy snowfall and mild temperatures, it's going to be pretty heavy going downhill as well as up, unless you're on a steep slope. And a quick snow test while digging out the house showed some weird layers in the snow that could signal some serious avalanche danger (you can learn a lot while digging out roofs around the base). Hakuba reports state extreme avy danger, and recommend staying on piste. We're not as Alpine, but that info is very much worth keeping in mind here as well. Avalanches can and do happen in Myoko. Unfortunately, I can't get out to do more on-snow tests; day two of hobbling around on damaged knee. Arrgh. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's probably no surprise to anyone anywhere in Japan that it's snowing; seems like the whole country is covered in white. It is really starting to come down—and, as the SnowJapan forecast predicted, the winds are really picking up. It's a good day to stay on the slopes, where it should be as snowy as out in the woods (and safer). With wind, heavy snow and slightly warmer weather, anyone going out in the backcountry may find themselves in snow heavy enough that they will be breaking trail down as well as up, except on the steepest slopes (been there, done that). So a good day for caution/restraint in the hills. It will be better as this settles. Me? I dinged a knee, so I'm inside. Or throwing snow as rehabilitation. First time in nearly 20 years here.... wishing I was out there in the winds and deeps...ahhhhh. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow! The Myoko reporter nails it again, with that prediction of gray turning to snow paying off (he scores!). OK, the fact is that mountain weather is pretty tricky, and you try your best. And we needed some snow, so it looks great. Not a lot yet, but the forecast is for an increasing rate over the next few days. It's even picking up at the moment, promising that today's hike in the hills will be on soft snow, and not as much of the slightly sun-crusted stuff we've been seeing in some spots over the past few days. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Back in the snow column today. Not a lot, but it's better than rain and declining snowpack! The temperatures being reported are interesting, though: Seki Onsen says it was -5, Akakura Onsen 2. The latter looks more likely, with my trusty car thermometer telling me it was 1 degree down in town near the highway. More extremes in the weather look likely ahead, too, form rain mid-week to much colder temperature and the chance of some more serious snow a little later. It seems like it's been crazy most everywhere, and Myoko is no exception! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Genuine snowfall today! The cars are turning white, the visibility is down, and we get to play with our big machines to clear the snow away. The wind is up as well, too; seems like we're getting a lot of wind with snowfall this year. Lots of drifts to cover up the firewood.... Today and tomorrow look good for getting out (hopefully the winds won't get too string and interfere with lift operations). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 1003cm Posted on Tuesday 11th March 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's clear and very white in Myoko this morning. No official reports in yet, but I have work to do and a report to file, so I'll say we had about 15cm overnight on top of the 25 or so yesterday. To be honest, the resorts' reports aren't all that helpful; we're still seeing some saying they're losing snow when others are adding fresh to the count. Overall I guess they give a pretty good sense of where we are, and thankfully the snowpack has recovered from our earlier bouts with rain and wind. The avalanche danger definitely is higher today, with lots of wind loading the past three days (there are plumes blowing off the peaks this morning as well). Be very careful on lee slopes, as pillows of wind-blown snow are almost certainly out there and ready to break. And today's hint: carry a good map. We almost had another rescue on Saturday, with a skier going off of Suginohara and ending up, drenched, in a stream at the bottom of a valley. Luckily his emergency call gave police a good triangulation and he was found by the resort's snowcat. It's likely he would have had at the very best a cold, cold night. We won't think about the worst (just glad he's OK). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Hello, and sorry to have been out for a few! Local obligations - sitting at a checkpoint for the cross country events of the Junior Olympics, held these two days in Myoko - and the fact that it was miserable, cold, bone-chilling rain all day yesterday. Today we were sitting in snow and some pretty brisk winds, but it's always better in snow. And it is snowing today, occasionally pretty heavily. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . After a beautifully sunny start to the day yesterday, the snow turned on again. We're currently seeing some pretty blustery weather, with occasional blasts of wind and snow that brings the visibility down to zero. Sorry that I was not my usual self yesterday; it was the day of the Yama no Kami (mountain god) event in the middle of Akakan that I almost forgot about.
