Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this seas 756cm Posted on Sunday 1st February 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa on this first day of February. Time is whizzing by. We had some more snow since yesterday but not that much in terms of cm. There were a few glimpses of blue sky and sun at times in the afternoon, and by night time to skies seemed quite clear. This morning starts off cloudy and all forecasts have us down for more snow and it looks like it might already be snowing higher up. (Perhaps just light snow today, rather than the heavy style). Wednesday and Thursday look like they will be day with much clearer skies and sun, though we might get some bits of that before then. Some of the snow depth numbers have not been updated yet today and so remain unchanged since yesterday. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. An early report this morning. We had beautiful weather yesterday with clear blue skies and sunshine. It got very mild in the afternoon, though, approaching +6C in town mid-afternoon. Today will likely be quite similar to yesterday with sunshine expected and perhaps even slightly warmer temps by this afternoon. Bit too warm. Come Friday it should start getting a bit colder again, which is good, and all being well there will be a fresh layer of snow as the weekend starts. As forecasts stand right now, we should be having a cold and snowy weekend, so keep that in mind if you are visiting. Quite how much snow to expect... unclear. Good news from GALA Yuzawa ski area – their Southern Area is scheduled to open this morning for the first time this season. The Eliza, Batman and Bronco B courses should be open. It has taken a while as we waited for enough snow and the required preparations to be made, but it’s really good to see it opening at last. The Landau Ropeway connecting that Southern Area with Yuzawa Kogen should also be open today. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Beautiful weather yesterday... but too warm, rising up to over 8C in town mid-afternoon. We lost over 50cm of snow in my garden over the last two days. (There's still a lot there). Today is not going to be as warm and actually get colder from around lunchtime. As of 7:40am we have a lot of cloud around. We might have to put up with some rain, but snow is forecast for later on and also tomorrow and Sunday. Forecasts seem to vary regarding how much snow we should expect across the next several days; some say it will be heavy snow. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. After those warmer days and some rain yesterday in town, I'm happy to report that we start the weekend with colder conditions and a layer of fresh snow... about 15cm of it in town. Forecasts for the day tell us to expect light snow today and the chance of heavier snow tomorrow. The snow clouds should be over us into Monday. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa. A cold morning with a bit of fresh snow... but not a whole lot. There has been around 5cm in town since yesterday, and probably a bit more than that at higher elevations. (Wouldn't it be great if ski areas told us about it?!) We do have snow forecast through the day today, but as this report is being prepared there are some breaks in the cloud and actually a bit of blue sky and sun breaking through. If anything it has felt like it is clearing up over the last 30 minutes. Anyway, all forecasts insist we should expect snow during the day. And windier conditions later on... It looks like the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa will not be open today. The main Central and Northern Areas remain open as normal. (I can't find any specific reason being offered). Just noticed that Kagura says strong winds are forecast this afternoon and the Tashiro <> Kagura connecting course will close at 1pm, and the Tashiro Ropeway will close at 3pm. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After a fine start and some blue sky, the weather had changed by late morning yesterday and we had some heavy snow at times, along with some windy conditions. There has been more snow overnight, with a total of 48cm on our measuring point since yesterday. Very nice. It is still snowing and due to ease off sometime before evening. Unfortunately, wind is an issue again today, and it is affecting a few ski areas: all of Kagura is closed today and GALA Yuzawa is also closed for the day. The Gondola side of Maiko Snow Resort is closed, though the hotel side is planning on being open. Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway may also be affected and possibly some other lifts. Limited visibility out there, so special care is required today for those braving the weather. Sunshine and calmer conditions are expected tomorrow. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 280cm Notes: Closed today due to weather conditions Special night skiing is planned for 14th, 21st, 28th March and 4th April ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 250cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th February and then Fridays and Saturdays until 28th March (until 8:00pm) ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 185cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th March (until 7:00pm on weekdays and Sundays, until 8:00pm on Saturdays and nights before holidays) ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 250cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 22nd March (until 9:00pm) The Atema and Osawa base car parks (and associated runs) are scheduled to be open on weekends only ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 310cm Base: 280cm Notes: Closed today due to weather conditions ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 265cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 28th March (until 2:00am the next morning) ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 285cm Notes: The Gondola side is closed today Floodlit night skiing on Saturdays and Sundays until 14th March (until 8:00pm on Saturdays and 7:00pm on Sundays) ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 320cm Base: 210cm ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 240cm Base: 200cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 21st March (until 8:30pm) ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 265cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 280cm Base: 130cm Notes: The upper Kogen area and base area are both open The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 200cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 200cm Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Monday 9th February 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 853cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 39 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 68cm (on 25th January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 595cm reported on 23 days February 2026 snowfall 102cm reported on 6 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa. It has been fine and sunny since early on this morning with just a bit of thin cloud around. It was quite cold early on but starting to warm up a bit now. The snow reported today is from yesterday morning. Tomorrow is going to be back to... precipitation. Hopefully of the snowy kind but some forecasts indicate the chance of some rain during the day. Tomorrow is a national holiday. (Perhaps that explains why some ski areas look busier than usual for a weekday than usual this morning). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this seas 860cm Posted on Wednesday 11th February 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday we enjoyed a sunny day with clouds gradually gathering later on. We have some (wet) snow falling early on some and there's a dusting kind of layer of snow so far. Unfortunately, pretty much all forecasts are still warning that there's a good chance it will turn to rain in town today; hopefully even if that happens, it will still be snowing at higher elevations. There's not a whole lot of snow potential on forecasts over the next week; rather we still expect a mild bump over the weekend. Ishiuchi Maruyama is having some problems with water supply, with no water currently available in upper areas. They hope to get it fixed up by the weekend. Ski lifts are operating but you need to get back down to use facilities that require water! Today is a national holiday in Japan and so ski areas will very likely be busier than normal for a weekday. - Yuzawa Now: Thursday 12th February 2026
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this seas 862cm Posted on Thursday 12th February 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday evening I went out for a walk with an umbrella. It was quite weird. Was it snowing or raining? Sleet didn't feel like the right word. After 5 minutes, the umbrella was really heavy with what can perhaps best be described as a layer of... slush. So, I think it was... slushing?! Hopefully it was snowing at higher elevations! Enough of that and on to today. We start with quite a lot of cloud to the north but it's quite bright and clearer over Yuzawa. Looks like the next 3 or 4 days will generally be clearer and warming up as we head into the weekend. Let's hope the temps don't get too high (and they shouldn't today, at least). - Yuzawa Now: Friday 13th February 2026
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this seas 864cm Posted on Friday 13th February 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa. 1-2cm of (wet) snow again after a generally fine and sunny day yesterday. I'm hearing of various snow conditions yesterday after the rain/slush/snow we got the previous day - generally, it seems to have been a case of better (and actually quite good) snow at higher elevations... as you might expect. As I noted in an update to the report yesterday morning, the lift staff at GALA Yuzawa were saying there was as much as 15cm of fresh snow up there. Hopefully higher elevations might have again received a bit more Early morning we start with largely overcast/cloudy kind of skies, but we expect some more sunshine during the day. So they may clear fairly quickly. Tomorrow and Sunday are still both expected to be unseasonably mild with generally sunny skies. Feel-good, for sure! (Less great when considering snow).
