- Yuzawa Now: Sunday 22nd January 2023
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this seas 390cm Posted on Sunday 22nd January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday, light snow (and sometimes a bit heavier) persisted for quite a lot of the day, even if it didn't amount to a huge amount in terms of new cm. This morning Kagura are reporting 3cm, would have thought there was more than that since yesterday morning. The 5cm reported in this report is post-report yesterday and in the evening. There has been no more overnight. It is bright and sunny this morning, but there is also a fair amount of thin cloud about and there are clearer skies in some directions. Forecasts are still shaping up and looking good for heavy snow around Tuesday and Wednesday. We can expect some very cold conditions and possibly very windy conditions as well, particularly on Wednesday. While we could do without the wind, a good old Yuzawa-like snow storm sounds very exciting. Don't let us down! In the meantime, it's a fine morning with good cold temperatures out there. --------------- Ski area information for Sunday 22nd January 2023 Ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region (listed in alphabetical order). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 46cm Snowfall at base this seas 436cm Posted on Wednesday 25th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yes... we have fresh snow! It was snowing very heavily at times yesterday, particularly in the afternoon and evening, and very windy too at times. That has left us with 46cm of snow at our Yuzawa measuring point, and 31cm measured just to the north of Ishiuchi. (Very happy to see that fresh snow, of course, though still worth noting that it is not as much as the 'up to 70cm by 9am' that Niigata forecasted yesterday afternoon). It is still snowing, with more due through the day today. Very cold for us with a current temperature of -7C. Forecasts show us getting quite a bit more snow over the next run of days including the coming weekend. The only ski area reporting snowfall numbers this morning, as far as we can tell, is Maiko. They are reporting 40cm. A few ski areas are closed today due to the weather conditions (mostly citing wind). GALA Yuzawa and Kagura are not opening. The top area of Naeba is closed and ropeway and top area of Yuzawa Kogen are also closed. Other lifts at other ski areas may be delayed or closed, depending on how the weather turns out. Take extra care out there if you decided to brave the conditions. --------------- Ski area information for Wednesday 25th January 2023 Ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region (listed in alphabetical order). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this seas 446cm Posted on Thursday 26th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. In the last hour or so, there has been some blue sky appearing and the sun is breaking through the clouds to the north as well. It might not last long with more snow due, particularly from this afternoon. We did get some more snow yesterday. There was 5cm on our measuring spot by 6pm, and a further 5cm there this morning. It is still keeping very cold and snow conditions should be really good everywhere at the moment. Also good news is that while it is still a bit windy, there is less than yesterday and all ski areas appear to be opening as planned this morning. Forecasts show more snow on the way over the coming days. Tomorrow night into Saturday is looking like it might be the heaviest. (By the way, it was too late for the report yesterday, but Tashiro were apparently dealing with 80cm of fresh snowfall yesterday). - Yuzawa Now: Friday 27th January 2023
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 23cm Snowfall at base this seas 469cm Posted on Friday 27th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. By mid-morning yesterday it was bright and sunny with mostly blue skies above the region. Beautiful. It started clouding over early afternoon, and then within an hour or two it was snowing again. By 7pm we had measured 9cm of fresh snow, and this morning there is another 14cm. So, there has been 23cm of snow in the town area since yesterday afternoon. We are starting this morning with a lot of cloud and some cool looking low cloud in the Minamiuonuma valley. Could it clear up like yesterday? Perhaps not - it feels like there is a bit too much cloud around, but you never know. We'll have to wait and see about that. Snow conditions should be very good this morning. By this evening we are expecting more snow and possibly heavy at times into tomorrow. Up until this cold spell, this season somehow didn't quite feel 'normal' - even with that great snowfall that we got in the first week of January. Even then it was curiously milder than we would expect. The current cold snap has brought lots of long icicles on roofs around town, lots of icy scenes... and a feeling of mid-season normality. A good thing. Hopefully it will continue. --------------- Ski area information for Friday 27th January 2023 Ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region (listed in alphabetical order). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 31cm Snowfall at base this seas 500cm Posted on Saturday 28th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday it got bright at times but it didn't clear up like it did on Thursday with an overcast feel for a large part of the day. And then it started snowing again. This morning Kagura are reporting an impressive 70cm of snow since yesterday and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting a fresh 40cm. As of 8:30am we have measured 32cm in town and it is still snowing. Currently -3.5C in town. More snow is expected through today and possibly into tomorrow morning. Good news from Iwappara - their top quad is scheduled to be open from today again with a few of the top courses available again. It looks like the connecting course between Tashiro and Kagura and the top pair lift at Kagura are going to be closed for the day today due to weather/conditions. Other than that, it's snowy and visibility might be limited, but snow conditions should be very good. This particular snow should ease off tomorrow and some forecasts show the chance of a bit of sun too. --------------- Ski area information for Saturday 28th January 2023 Ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region (listed in alphabetical order). The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. The first few hours of this morning we enjoyed totally clear blue skies above Yuzawa. The mountains were looking truly spectacular. Check out the photo from Maiko at the start of the day, below. (The other two photos are from mid-morning). By mid-morning some clouds had started to form and there is quite a lot of cloud around now. And we are due some snow from this afternoon again. The Niigata Prefecture forecast shows 'up to 5cm' of snow by 3pm today. That might not happen, but it's still amazing how quickly things can change sometimes! So, yes, we are due some more snow later and overnight into tomorrow. We've been clicking into a good pattern. Kagura are reporting 30cm of fresh snowfall (along with some quite windy conditions) and Maiko are reporting 40cm. It seems like we can expect 20-40cm of new snow on the mountains in ungroomed areas. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It did continue snowing yesterday through until the afternoon, though it didn't amount to much in terms of cm. There was 4cm on our measuring point since the report yesterday. We start this morning with mostly clear skies. It should be a great morning to be outside, though we are told it might get a bit windy at times. Today is going to be milder than it has been perhaps getting as warm as 6C in town. Snow is due tonight, and there is a chance that it might start off as rain. Hopefully that does not happen. It should be snowing overnight though and perhaps during the day tomorrow. In the end we observed 437cm of snowfall during the month of January. For the season as a whole the number is 560cm. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 18cm Snowfall at base this seas 582cm Posted on Thursday 2nd February 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday we enjoyed some fine blue skies in the morning. It was quite windy at times and clouds started gathering around mid-morning. They never really took over though until later in the day. Unfortunately, as it was on the milder side we did get some rain in the evening, but overnight it turned into snow. Happily, we do have a layer of snow this morning. Kagura and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 30cm of fresh. (Unfortunately, only the Mitsumata Area is opening at the start of the day due to strong wind conditions forecast). In town we measured 18cm of snow overnight (and 14cm was measured to the north, close to Ishiuchi Maruyama). Changeable weather conditions early this morning. Just a short while ago there was some blue sky and sun, but it has since started snowing again just north of Yuzawa. We are not expecting much during the day though, and it may well get clearer again. Currently it is around -1C and it shouldn't warm up much from that during the day. --------------- Ski area information for Thursday 2nd February 2023 Ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region (listed in alphabetical order). - Yuzawa Now: Friday 3rd February 2023
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this seas 589cm Posted on Friday 3rd February 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday we had some changeable weather conditions. At times there was some blue sky and sunshine, but it often quickly started to snow again. In the end it felt like it was snowing more than it was clearer, though it wasn't the kind of snowfall where the cm quickly piled up. Our measurement since yesterday morning is 7cm. We can probably expect 5-10cm of snow on the slopes. It is snowing lightly at the moment though mostly a day of cloud is forecast. It actually feels like we might get to see the sun again as it is currently trying to break through the clouds to the north. The forecasts for tomorrow are varied: some predict a cloudy day, some say it will be sunny in the morning. We might get some more snow again tomorrow night too, which would be great for weekend visitors. There's some news on the Yuzawa Snow Link connections between Yuzawa Kogen, GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama. The Buggy lift that connects GALA Yuzawa with Ishiuchi Maruyama will be open from... today! The Landau Ropeway that connects GALA Yuzawa with Yuzawa Kogen will be open from next Saturday (11th February). A new simple rope tow lift has also been spotted at the top of Ishiuchi Maruyama. They are calling it Superstar Lift. Basically, this lift connects the top of the Buggy lift with the summit of Ishiuchi Maruyama, allowing people from GALA to get up to the top of Ishiuchi Maruyama easily. (Without that lift, you need to use the winding course to properly connect with Ishiuchi and miss the views from the summit). We will find out more about that lift and update our information both in this report and on the Ishiuchi Maruyama page on SnowJapan soon. --------------- Ski area information for Friday 3rd February 2023 Ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region (listed in alphabetical order). The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Fine weather yesterday morning with cloud gradually forming, especially to the north of Yuzawa over the Minamiuonuma valley. It was snowing by evening and this morning there has been about 10cm. A bit on the wet side (in town at least) as it isn't as cold as it has been. Currently just slightly under 0C in town. Light snow is still falling though it isn't expected to continue for long and there might be some clearer skies later on. Tomorrow looks like it will be a nice day too with sun from early on. - Yuzawa Now: Thursday 9th February 2023
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this seas 613cm Posted on Thursday 9th February 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We did get a bit of sunshine again yesterday before the clouds moved in again. At first, they brought rain to the region but the good news is that we have a layer of snow this morning. Kagura are reporting 30cm of fresh snowfall. Unfortunately, the Tashiro Area of Kagura will be closed today due to strong forecast winds. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 20cm. And we have measured 14cm at our measuring point. It's probably not enough in lower areas for a complete reset, but very welcome Current temperature is -0.5C and it is still snowing lightly. Cloud and light snow at times is what is forecast for today and tomorrow. We can probably expect clearer skies over the weekend and it will be milder again. There's snow due early next week too... --------------- Ski area information for Thursday 9th February 2023 Ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region (listed in alphabetical order).
