Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 41cm Snowfall at base this seas 164cm Posted on Monday 2nd January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Excellent news this morning with snow coming down in true Yuzawa style. It didn't feel quite so excellent yesterday evening. After some fine weather during the day, we got rained on, but it thankfully quite quickly turned into snow and apparently has been snowing all night. Here's how much fresh snowfall ski areas are reporting this morning: - Kagura: 60cm - Naeba: 40cm - Yuzawa Kogen: 40cm - Maiko: 50cm - Ishiuchi: 40cm At our measuring point there is 41cm, with just under 25cm to the south in the Shiozawa area of Minamiuonuma. Now this feels more like normal! And with more due over the next few days, conditions are set to get a significant boost. Brilliant. Let's see how long it can continue. The Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed today but other ski areas appear to be opening as planned. --------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 160cm The Central Area, Northern Area and downhill course are open Ishiuchi Maruyama Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 40cm Official snow depth: 180cm Night skiing until 8:00pm Iwappara Official snow depth: 90cm Night skiing until 8:00pm Joetsu Kokusai Night skiing until 9:00pm Official snow depth: 160cm (top) Kagura Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 60cm Official snow depth: 200cm (top), 140cm (base) The Tashiro Area is closed today The Kagura Area is open up to the Number 1 lift (top Number 5 and 4 lifts closed) Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 180cm The D lift normally only operates on weekends and holidays Maiko Snow Resort Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 50cm Official snow depth: 200cm (top), 80cm (lower) Night skiing until 8:00pm (Maiko Area) Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 180cm (top), 90cm (base) The top pair lift normally only operates on weekdays and holidays Naeba Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 40cm Official snow depth: 140cm (top), 80cm (base) Night skiing until 8:30pm NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 160cm Yuzawa Kogen Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 40cm Official snow depth: 130cm (top); 70cm (base) Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 135cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 110cm Yuzawa Now 2022-2023 season Data as of Monday 2nd January 2023 Total snowfall at base so far 164cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 15 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 41cm (2nd January) November 2022 snowfall 0cm December 2022 snowfall 123cm reported on 14 days January 2023 snowfall 41cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 3rd January 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 40cm Snowfall at base this seas 204cm Posted on Tuesday 3rd January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It has been snowing since the report yesterday, heavily at times. :) Here's how much fresh snowfall ski areas are reporting this morning: - Kagura: 20cm - Naeba: 15-20cm - Maiko: 40cm Those numbers for Kagura and Naeba seem surprisingly low, Maiko is more like what we are seeing. By 6pm last night we measured 11cm of fresh snow at our measuring point in town. This morning as of 8:30am there is another 29cm on there, so a total of 40cm since yesterday. This is good! There's a curious lack of the huge icicles you sometimes get on house roofs and stormy winds (in town at least), but these last few days Yuzawa seems more like itself. With a few more days of snow on the forecasts, it looks set to continue building up very nicely. The snow depth numbers that the ski areas are reporting also look more normal now! Sudden heavy snow of course brings dangers and there is increased avalanche risk out there now with Kagura closing a few runs including the Kagura-Tashiro connecting run. The top Number 5 lift will be closed again. Take care out there if you are venturing out. --------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 220cm The Central Area, Northern Area and downhill course are open Ishiuchi Maruyama Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): ?cm Official snow depth: 200cm Night skiing until 8:00pm Iwappara Official snow depth: 120cm Night skiing until 7:00pm Joetsu Kokusai Night skiing until 9:00pm Official snow depth: 190cm (top) Kagura Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 20cm Official snow depth: 250cm (top), 180cm (base) Both base Ropeways are open but some limitations due to weather conditions this morning Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 185cm The D lift normally only operates on weekends and holidays Maiko Snow Resort Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 40cm Official snow depth: 230cm (top), 110cm (lower) Night skiing until 8:00pm (Maiko Area) Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 200cm (top), 120cm (base) The top pair lift normally only operates on weekdays and holidays Naeba Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 15-20cm Official snow depth: 140cm (top), 80cm (base) Night skiing until 8:30pm NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 195cm Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: 160cm (top); 90m (base) Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 155cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 140cm Yuzawa Now 2022-2023 season Data as of Tuesday 3rd January 2023 Total snowfall at base so far 204cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 16 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 41cm (2nd January) November 2022 snowfall 0cm December 2022 snowfall 123cm reported on 14 days January 2023 snowfall 81cm reported on 2 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 4th January 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 41cm Snowfall at base this seas 245cm Posted on Wednesday 4th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There was a short period early afternoon yesterday when we saw some blue sky and even a bit of sunshine, but apart from that it has been snowing for most of the time since yesterday and apparently quite heavily overnight. Last night at 6pm we had 8cm at our measuring point and as of 8am this morning there is another 33cm on there. So that's 41cm since yesterday. That's over 120cm over the last three reports. Nice. Here's what ski areas are reporting this morning: - Kagura: 50cm - Yuzawa Kogen: 30cm - Maiko: 50cm A few ski areas around the area are again this morning mentioning avalanche and snow slide risk. The top area at Iwappara is closed this morning for that reason. It's natural to be very excited about all this sudden snow, but important to remember the inherent dangers out there while having the fun. There is going to be more snow too... it is snowing now and set to continue through tomorrow. --------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 240cm The Central Area, Northern Area and downhill course are open Ishiuchi Maruyama Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): ?cm Official snow depth: 220cm Night skiing until 8:00pm Iwappara Official snow depth: 140cm Night skiing until 7:00pm Joetsu Kokusai Night skiing until 9:00pm Official snow depth: 210cm (top) Kagura Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 50cm Official snow depth: 250cm (top), 180cm (base) Top lift at Kagura closed as they deal with snow Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 215cm The D lift normally only operates on weekends and holidays Maiko Snow Resort Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 50cm Official snow depth: 250cm (top), 150cm (lower) Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 200cm (top), 120cm (base) The top pair lift normally only operates on weekdays and holidays Naeba Official snow depth: 160cm (top), 90cm (base) Night skiing until 8:30pm NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 220cm Yuzawa Kogen Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 30cm Official snow depth: 190cm (top); 110cm (base) Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 195cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 170cm Yuzawa Now 2022-2023 season Data as of Wednesday 4th January 2023 Total snowfall at base so far 245cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 17 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 41cm (2nd and 4th January) November 2022 snowfall 0cm December 2022 snowfall 123cm reported on 14 days January 2023 snowfall 122cm reported on 3 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 5th January 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 51cm Snowfall at base this seas 296cm Posted on Thursday 5th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. For a while during the day yesterday it was snowing as heavily as it has been this season so far. Really coming down at a fast rate. By the evening, there was 26cm on our measuring point and there's a further 25cm on there this morning. Total of 51cm snowfall. That's more than what ski areas are reporting this morning but... it is what it is! Perhaps it is one of those times when they like to underplay the snowfall. Don't want to scare folks! It is still snowing this morning and will probably continue through the day today, but it's due to start easing off. We might get some clearer skies tomorrow and the day after. The biggest wish is that it remains cold so we can keep the quality of all this beautiful snow. In ski area news, the Tashiro Area and top lift at Kagura are closed today due to wind and weather conditions. They are reporting a temperature of -12C up top there. Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway (and the top section of that ski area) is also closed at the start of the day, but may open if conditions allow. The Yuzawa Snow Link connections between Yuzawa Kogen and GALA Yuzawa (Ropeway) and GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama (lift) will not be opening as planned on Saturday (7th January). The reason being given is staffing issues (ie. not enough people). It looks like it is being officially 'delayed', so not clear how that will play out. Buses will be available between the three ski areas. --------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 270cm The Central Area, Northern Area and downhill course are open Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth: 270cm Night skiing until 8:00pm Iwappara Official snow depth: 160cm Night skiing until 7:00pm Top area currently closed due to avalanche risk Joetsu Kokusai Night skiing until 9:00pm Official snow depth: 250cm (top) Kagura Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 30cm Official snow depth: 280cm (top), 200cm (base) Tashiro Area and top lift at Kagura closed due to wind and weather conditions Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 225cm The D lift normally only operates on weekends and holidays Maiko Snow Resort Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 40cm Official snow depth: 270cm (top), 180cm (lower) Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 220cm (top), 160cm (base) The top pair lift normally only operates on weekdays and holidays Naeba Official snow depth: 180cm (top), 100cm (base) Night skiing until 8:30pm Limited operations due to weather conditions, top area closed NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 250cm Yuzawa Kogen Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 30cm Official snow depth: 200cm (top); 120cm (base) Top Kogen area closed at the start of the day due to strong winds Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 225cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 200cm Yuzawa Now 2022-2023 season Data as of Thursday 5th January 2023 Total snowfall at base so far 296cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 18 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 51cm (5th January) November 2022 snowfall 0cm December 2022 snowfall 123cm reported on 14 days January 2023 snowfall 173cm reported on 4 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 6th January 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 33cm Snowfall at base this seas 329cm Posted on Friday 6th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Just like how sometimes when it doesn't snow, it doesn't seem to want to snow; sometimes, when it starts snowing, it doesn't seem to want to quit! We've measured another 33cm since the report yesterday (10cm by 6pm and a further 23cm overnight). That takes us to over 2m of observed snowfall - at town level - over the last five Yuzawa Now reports. Normal service seems to have resumed! Maiko are reporting 50cm of fresh snowfall since yesterday; other ski areas 20-30cm. While we thought it might have stopped by now, it is still snowing. It is due to ease off sometime during the day today and there might well be some sunshine tomorrow morning. (Though we might get more snow overnight into Sunday). It looks like Kagura, Naeba and Yuzawa Kogen are all opening as planned this morning after some disruption due to weather yesterday. The top area at Iwappara is still closed due to avalanche risk. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. No fresh snow being reported yesterday by ski areas (though we did get 2cm post-report yesterday morning, so that's where that is coming from!) This morning there is cloud around but also blue sky and sunshine. It's a fine morning. Fairly chilly early on, but due to be a mild day - hopefully not too warm. We might get some light snowfall overnight, though shouldn't expect much. Monday is a national holiday here in Japan (Coming of Age Day) and so it's a long weekend for many - and usually one of the busier weekends of the ski season. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Fine and sunny weather yesterday... and kind of warm, too. There was a bit of rain last night but it quickly turned into snow and this morning there is several cm of new snow on the ground. Kagura ski area is reporting 5cm (and a temp of -8C at top, but most places are not feeling that cold). It is snowing lightly early morning; the forecast is for cloudy conditions today. We are due more snow from tomorrow night and during the day on Tuesday. After that, by the end of the week there's some mild (warm) temps coming our way. Tomorrow is a national holiday here in Japan. So expect there to be more people about than there usually is on a Monday. Someone asked about the Southern Area at GALA Yuzawa and when it might open. No news to report there yet - that area is never always open, so it is not unusual for it to not be. Lifts at GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama are open but they may be moving at reduced speeds and there may be other lifts affected by wind during the day today. We have fresh snowfall. It started with rain again last night but this morning there is 17cm of fresh snow at our measuring point in Yuzawa and 12cm in Ishiuchi. Kagura aren't reporting a number this morning, but Maiko are saying that they have 30cm, presumably up top. Hopefully we will get more during the day today. From tomorrow we are due clearer weather and things gradually warming up to some unseasonably warm temps on Saturday (and quite possibly rain). It might even get up to +10C. Thankfully, it should quickly get colder again Sunday onwards. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We have another 10cm of fresh snow around town areas since yesterday morning. It was on and off during the day and continued into night time, though no further snow early morning. (Kagura are reporting 50cm since yesterday which sounds great!) Today starts with quite a lot of blue sky and some cloud. It's going to be a fine day. With the fresh snow yesterday, conditions should generally be good and it shouldn't get too warm (perhaps about +3C). Tomorrow is set to be warmer, then warmer still on Friday and Saturday. Good to see the chance of snow again on the forecasts for Sunday. Ski areas opening as planned this morning. The top lift at Iwappara will be closing at 2:30pm today for some maintenance. --------------- Ski area information for Wednesday 11th January 2023 Ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region (listed in alphabetical order). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this seas 371cm Posted on Tuesday 17th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After some more rain/sleet, we got some proper snow in the evening yesterday and there has been around 5-10cm of snow across the region. Kagura and Naeba are reporting 10cm. Maiko are reporting 15cm. We have measured 9cm in Yuzawa and 5cm in the Ishiuchi area. All snow is always welcome, of course, though we could do with bigger numbers. There might be more snow tomorrow but the real chance of heavier snow looks due Friday night into Saturday. Fingers crossed. Ski areas opening as scheduled this morning, though that top run at Iwappara is still closed and there are a few restrictions at Muikamachi Hakkaisan due to avalanche risk. --------------- Ski area information for Tuesday 17th January 2023 Ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region (listed in alphabetical order). • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 19th January 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this seas 373cm Posted on Thursday 19th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Beautiful clear blue skies over the region this morning. There is some low-lying cloud in the Minamiuonuma valley just the north of Yuzawa, but apart from that it's clear blue and white. After some rain again we did get some snow last night. It has gone from the roads around town now, but that is what is added to this report. Currently -2C and forecast to get to around +4C during the day in town. Kagura is reporting 10cm of fresh snow since yesterday. The top lift at Muikamachi Hakkaisan has apparently run into some trouble (something to do with one of the lift pillars). This season that lift has been scheduled to be open on weekends and holidays, but it looks like it is going to be closed for an undetermined period. With that lift closed, you need to get the Ropeway each time you want to access the top area. Looking ahead, when can we expect more snow? Well, tomorrow night into Saturday is still looking promising and then early in the week looks like it might be good. In the meantime, we can get out and enjoy this clear weather. --------------- Ski area information for Thursday 19th January 2023 Ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region (listed in alphabetical order). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this seas 385cm Posted on Saturday 21st January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It is really good to see some fresh snow on the ground this morning. Once again, it feels like it is not as much as we were told to expect around town, but Kagura are reporting a very respectable 30cm. So that sounds like a decent refresh. The only other ski area reporting on snow numbers this morning is Maiko Snow Resort with 10cm. We have measured 12cm here in Yuzawa and 5-6cm just to the north in the Ishiuchi area of Minamiuonuma. It is continuing to snow lightly at the moment, but there have also been moments of clearing skies this morning in places. We are due at least light snow for the day. There is also some windy conditions on the mountains this morning and the Kagura and Tashiro Areas of the Kagura resort are both closed (and the Dragondola is also on hold). Other ski areas seem to be opening as planned, though there is the potential for some wind-related disruptions. The Quest Park in the Northen Area of GALA Yuzawa is opening from today. --------------- Ski area information for Saturday 21st January 2023 Ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region (listed in alphabetical order).
