Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata
New snowfall at base 33cm
Snowfall at base this seas 329cm
Posted on Friday 6th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here.
Just like how sometimes when it doesn't snow, it doesn't seem to want to snow; sometimes, when it starts snowing, it doesn't seem to want to quit!
We've measured another 33cm since the report yesterday (10cm by 6pm and a further 23cm overnight). That takes us to over 2m of observed snowfall - at town level - over the last five Yuzawa Now reports. Normal service seems to have resumed!
Maiko are reporting 50cm of fresh snowfall since yesterday; other ski areas 20-30cm.
While we thought it might have stopped by now, it is still snowing. It is due to ease off sometime during the day today and there might well be some sunshine tomorrow morning. (Though we might get more snow overnight into Sunday).
It looks like Kagura, Naeba and Yuzawa Kogen are all opening as planned this morning after some disruption due to weather yesterday. The top area at Iwappara is still closed due to avalanche risk.
There's a lot of snow out there now.
