The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. First up, Kagura and Yuzawa Kogen are closed today. Naeba is also affected by wind conditions. Lifts at GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama are open but they may be moving at reduced speeds and there may be other lifts affected by wind during the day today. We have fresh snowfall. It started with rain again last night but this morning there is 17cm of fresh snow at our measuring point in Yuzawa and 12cm in Ishiuchi. Kagura aren't reporting a number this morning, but Maiko are saying that they have 30cm, presumably up top. Hopefully we will get more during the day today. From tomorrow we are due clearer weather and things gradually warming up to some unseasonably warm temps on Saturday (and quite possibly rain). It might even get up to +10C. Thankfully, it should quickly get colder again Sunday onwards. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We have another 10cm of fresh snow around town areas since yesterday morning. It was on and off during the day and continued into night time, though no further snow early morning. (Kagura are reporting 50cm since yesterday which sounds great!) Today starts with quite a lot of blue sky and some cloud. It's going to be a fine day. With the fresh snow yesterday, conditions should generally be good and it shouldn't get too warm (perhaps about +3C). Tomorrow is set to be warmer, then warmer still on Friday and Saturday. Good to see the chance of snow again on the forecasts for Sunday. Ski areas opening as planned this morning. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After some more rain/sleet, we got some proper snow in the evening yesterday and there has been around 5-10cm of snow across the region. Kagura and Naeba are reporting 10cm. Maiko are reporting 15cm. We have measured 9cm in Yuzawa and 5cm in the Ishiuchi area. All snow is always welcome, of course, though we could do with bigger numbers. There might be more snow tomorrow but the real chance of heavier snow looks due Friday night into Saturday. Fingers crossed. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Beautiful clear blue skies over the region this morning. There is some low-lying cloud in the Minamiuonuma valley just the north of Yuzawa, but apart from that it's clear blue and white. After some rain again we did get some snow last night. It has gone from the roads around town now, but that is what is added to this report. Currently -2C and forecast to get to around +4C during the day in town. Kagura is reporting 10cm of fresh snow since yesterday. The top lift at Muikamachi Hakkaisan has apparently run into some trouble (something to do with one of the lift pillars). This season that lift has been scheduled to be open on weekends and holidays, but it looks like it is going to be closed for an undetermined period. With that lift closed, you need to get the Ropeway each time you want to access the top area. Looking ahead, when can we expect more snow? Well, tomorrow night into Saturday is still looking promising and then early in the week looks like it might be good. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It is really good to see some fresh snow on the ground this morning. Once again, it feels like it is not as much as we were told to expect around town, but Kagura are reporting a very respectable 30cm. So that sounds like a decent refresh. The only other ski area reporting on snow numbers this morning is Maiko Snow Resort with 10cm. We have measured 12cm here in Yuzawa and 5-6cm just to the north in the Ishiuchi area of Minamiuonuma. It is continuing to snow lightly at the moment, but there have also been moments of clearing skies this morning in places. We are due at least light snow for the day. There is also some windy conditions on the mountains this morning and the Kagura and Tashiro Areas of the Kagura resort are both closed (and the Dragondola is also on hold). Other ski areas seem to be opening as planned, though there is the potential for some wind-related disruptions. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday, light snow (and sometimes a bit heavier) persisted for quite a lot of the day, even if it didn't amount to a huge amount in terms of new cm. This morning Kagura are reporting 3cm, would have thought there was more than that since yesterday morning. The 5cm reported in this report is post-report yesterday and in the evening. There has been no more overnight. It is bright and sunny this morning, but there is also a fair amount of thin cloud about and there are clearer skies in some directions. Forecasts are still shaping up and looking good for heavy snow around Tuesday and Wednesday. We can expect some very cold conditions and possibly very windy conditions as well, particularly on Wednesday. While we could do without the wind, a good old Yuzawa-like snow storm sounds very exciting. Don't let us down! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yes... we have fresh snow! It was snowing very heavily at times yesterday, particularly in the afternoon and evening, and very windy too at times. That has left us with 46cm of snow at our Yuzawa measuring point, and 31cm measured just to the north of Ishiuchi. (Very happy to see that fresh snow, of course, though still worth noting that it is not as much as the 'up to 70cm by 9am' that Niigata forecasted yesterday afternoon). It is still snowing, with more due through the day today. Very cold for us with a current temperature of -7C. Forecasts show us getting quite a bit more snow over the next run of days including the coming weekend. The only ski area reporting snowfall numbers this morning, as far as we can tell, is Maiko. They are reporting 40cm. A few ski areas are closed today due to the weather conditions (mostly citing wind). GALA Yuzawa and Kagura are not opening. The top area of Naeba is closed and ropeway and top area of Yuzawa Kogen are also closed. Other lifts at other ski areas may be delayed or closed, depending on how the weather turns out. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. In the last hour or so, there has been some blue sky appearing and the sun is breaking through the clouds to the north as well. It might not last long with more snow due, particularly from this afternoon. We did get some more snow yesterday. There was 5cm on our measuring spot by 6pm, and a further 5cm there this morning. It is still keeping very cold and snow conditions should be really good everywhere at the moment. Also good news is that while it is still a bit windy, there is less than yesterday and all ski areas appear to be opening as planned this morning. Forecasts show more snow on the way over the coming days. Tomorrow night into Saturday is looking like it might be the heaviest. (By the way, it was too late for the report yesterday, but Tashiro were apparently dealing with 80cm of fresh snowfall yesterday). The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. By mid-morning yesterday it was bright and sunny with mostly blue skies above the region. Beautiful. It started clouding over early afternoon, and then within an hour or two it was snowing again. By 7pm we had measured 9cm of fresh snow, and this morning there is another 14cm. So, there has been 23cm of snow in the town area since yesterday afternoon. We are starting this morning with a lot of cloud and some cool looking low cloud in the Minamiuonuma valley. Could it clear up like yesterday? Perhaps not - it feels like there is a bit too much cloud around, but you never know. We'll have to wait and see about that. Snow conditions should be very good this morning. By this evening we are expecting more snow and possibly heavy at times into tomorrow. Up until this cold spell, this season somehow didn't quite feel 'normal' - even with that great snowfall that we got in the first week of January. Even then it was curiously milder than we would expect. The current cold snap has brought lots of long icicles on roofs around town, lots of icy scenes... and a feeling of mid-season normality. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday it got bright at times but it didn't clear up like it did on Thursday with an overcast feel for a large part of the day. And then it started snowing again. This morning Kagura are reporting an impressive 70cm of snow since yesterday and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting a fresh 40cm. As of 8:30am we have measured 32cm in town and it is still snowing. Currently -3.5C in town. More snow is expected through today and possibly into tomorrow morning. Good news from Iwappara - their top quad is scheduled to be open from today again with a few of the top courses available again. It looks like the connecting course between Tashiro and Kagura and the top pair lift at Kagura are going to be closed for the day today due to weather/conditions. Other than that, it's snowy and visibility might be limited, but snow conditions should be very good. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. The first few hours of this morning we enjoyed totally clear blue skies above Yuzawa. The mountains were looking truly spectacular. Check out the photo from Maiko at the start of the day, below. (The other two photos are from mid-morning). By mid-morning some clouds had started to form and there is quite a lot of cloud around now. And we are due some snow from this afternoon again. The Niigata Prefecture forecast shows 'up to 5cm' of snow by 3pm today. That might not happen, but it's still amazing how quickly things can change sometimes! So, yes, we are due some more snow later and overnight into tomorrow. We've been clicking into a good pattern. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Well yesterday we got a wide range of weather conditions yesterday. First of all we had those stunning clear blue skies. It had clouded over by late morning and soon after it started snowing. And we did actually get 4-5cm by late afternoon. Such contrasts! This morning there is an additional 18cm of snow from to add giving us a total of 21cm since yesterday. Kagura are reporting 30cm of fresh snowfall (along with some quite windy conditions) and Maiko are reporting 40cm. It seems like we can expect 20-40cm of new snow on the mountains in ungroomed areas. It is still snowing and will probably ease off as the day goes on. We might even get some clearer skies again later.
