We had a largely cloudy day yesterday with some light snow falling on mountainsides, though it remained pretty mild generally. This morning Hakuba Goryu and Hakuba Happo-one are reporting up to 10cm of snowfall on upper areas. Iwatake (Mountain Side) is reporting 2cm. I moved a bit of snow off the top of my car early this morning (from overnight). Line C lift at Hakuba 47 should be opening once inspections are complete, hopefully this morning. Maybe some snow over the weekend but the best news is the potential for 'heavy snowfall' now showing for around Tuesday into Wednesday. That sounds more like it! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. A fair amount of cloud around the mountains at times yesterday, but blue sky and sunshine too. It was very pleasant out there, but too warm for my liking. We have more sunshine this morning and another fairly mild day expected. A few ski areas a reporting a cm or two of snow on higher elevations, but not snow down at base. It seems that much of Japan is experiencing a spell of relatively mild and dry weather. Higher up, generally limited visibility with snow falling. Some fairly winds conditions are being reported at the start of the day and top lifts at Happo-one and Tsugaike are affected. Others might also be affected. Ski areas this morning reporting up to 20cm of snow since yesterday in upper areas. All the numbers in the list below, of course. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Woo-hooo! It's only a little bit, but it's hard not to get excited about having snow on the car roof this morning down here near base. In places, even around bases of ski areas, it's more like just a dusting - and there doesn't seem to be that much snow even higher up on the mountains - but I can just about justify the first cm of the season for this report. May there be many hundreds more! Still a lot of cloud around but some blue sky is appearing too. We can perhaps expect more of that as the morning progresses. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Yes, this is very good. It's snowing this morning and there's a good 5-10cm of snow accumulated across base areas - and no doubt a fair bit more than that at higher elevations. What's more, it's snowing nicely right now too. All being well, we'll get a fair amount more through today and into tomorrow. Ski areas will be bata-bata busy and (hopefully) ready to make some big decisions soon. If I hear anything of note during the day, I'll update this report. -------------------------------- Update at 9:30am: Hakuba 47 is reporting over 60cm of snow up top and around 18cm at base. Tsugaike is reporting 40+cm. Sounds great to me! More, more, more...! -------------------------------- Update at 5:45pm: What a fine day it has been! There will be lots of snow to report tomorrow morning, but for now I just want to share the news that Tsugaike Mountain Resort, ABLE Hakuba Goryu and Hakuba Happo-one have all announced that they will be opening from tomorrow morning, Saturday 30th November. Hurray! Tsugaike plans to be open from 8am. An adult ticket from the ticket window will be 5,500 yen for the day. Goryu plans to open from 10am with the top Panorama run available. An adult ticket is yours for the day at the handsome sum of 7,500 yen (!) including 500 yen returnable. Happo-one plans to open from 11am with the top Panorama run available. An adult ticket is 4,000 yen. At all three, you will need to ride the gondola up to the ski run that is open. As of 5:45pm, there is no news yet from Hakuba 47 and I have to sign off for the day. Please note that my report tomorrow morning might be a bit late as there is a lot of information to gather. But don't worry, it's all good news. (Well, perhaps apart from some alarmingly rapid price increases!) -------------------------------- Below are the planned opening dates for ski areas around Hakuba. There might not be much snow left, and it definitely ain't fluffy, but it's going to be a really good day to be out there. By all accounts it is going to be a very warm day with temps rising up into high 20s in the village. The top Riesen Grat course is now closed (for skiing/snowboarding) at Happo-one. The Grat quad is still operating, but only for sightseeing/climbing folks. Hakuba 47 appears to be planning on keeping the gondola moving until 28th April. (After that, access will be via Goryu. And it may close sooner depending on snow). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . End of the penultimate week of November up here (not a word I use that often), and your writer was away during this week as the first snowfall arrived at the base level, bringing about 35cm of wet snow. I also missed the first introduction of my new dog to snow, and, being a Lab/Golden mix, she ate snow, buried her nose in the snow, and would not stop running in it. Not just snow-sliding humans that love the white stuff. Not a lot of big changes for this season to announce. Myoko Suginohara did join the Ikon Pass system, which Lotte Arai was already a member of. More stuff is happening on the Suginohara side with the big development plans that I know many readers were commenting on/concerned about. It doesn’t seem like we’ll be the next Aspen, Whistler or Zermatt (depending on which press release you happened to have read in the past, like the figures of up to US$12 billion or something) but there are new hotels coming. It’ll be a few years until the first opens, maybe 10 years to get the project finished. Will the snow still be falling in 10 years? Will I still be skiing in 10 years? So many long-term things, so better to concentrate on the current. All the gossip is that this will be a good year, and the snow this time is hanging on pretty well. Usually the first November snow means a heavy snow that breaks branches and brings down trees, but this time the snow is pretty normal and it’s not immediately disappearing. We have a few days of rain and sun before the next forecasted fall comes next week. It’s actually pretty nice weather for November, which is often the grimmest month of the year in Myoko (cold rain, gray, bare trees….). The snowthrowers are oiled up and ready to go; ski waxing can wait a little longer; almost all the hydrangeas are tied up against the heavy snow—your gardening tip for Snow Country! Tie up those hydrangeas and they’ll be tall and robust in spring, not crawling along the ground. Anyway, Now it’s just waiting time until I meet with all of you on a regular basis. Maybe I’ll take some shots from the ski area opening ceremony on December 1 (complete with Shito priests and offerings and a big party. Must have a good party. See you shortly! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning and... what a treat! Overnight we have been blessed with an amount of snow that we'd be very pleased with during the peak of the season. We could not ask for more than this in March. Cortina and Iwatake take away the award for 'more reported new snowfall'... both are reporting 50cm (and more than that in the case of Cortina). Other ski areas are also reporting large numbers as you can see in the list below. Tsugaike is saying 40cm and more than that in wind-blown areas. There was an impressive amount on the top of my car this morning. Impressive. And exciting. Woo-hoo! :) The only downer is that wind is affecting some lifts at the start of the day. It is still snowing with more expected today and into tomorrow morning. And in the coming week too. Another of the Now reports said something similar, but Nature really seems to have mixed up February and March this year! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Well, yesterday was exciting! And this morning there's more snow to add to the fun. You can see the fresh snowfall numbers below, but basically the big ski areas are reporting a further 10-20cm (and more) on the mountain. Iwatake and (top of Riesen at) Happo-one reporting up to 30cm. Right now it is still mostly cloudy but some blue sky and sun breaking through in places. It feels like it might clear up during the day... and sun is forecast for tomorrow morning. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. There's more snow! And not just a little. Up to 30cm is being reported by ski areas on the mountain and there's a decent amount down to base too. It is still snowing and quite windy in places - that might affect some lifts. This first few weeks of March really has felt like 'mid-season'. If you remember, parts of mid-season itself really didn't feel like mid-season. I can imagine that some of you who visited during those periods might be looking on in envy at the people who are here at the moment just now. March is always difficult to predict, but this season it is certainly delivering us some very nice surprises. I can see this making future visit-timing decisions more complicated for some people! I note a few of the other Now daily reports on SnowJapan saying very similar things at the moment. Take a look at the data below from Hakuba Valley. It's self-reporting (ie. coming from the ski areas themselves) but Hakuba Goryu has now broken through the 10m mark for this season. Nice. Anyway, from tomorrow there should be some (or lots of) sun and warmer conditions. But perhaps back to more fresh snow next week.
