Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido

New snowfall at base 4cm
Snowfall at base this season 27cm

Greetings from Niseko.

There's not a whole lot to report at the moment as we continue to wait.

A little more snow since yesterday but not major. Forecasts don't show any major snowfall blessing us over the coming week; maybe a bit more Tuesday night.

The ski areas hope to open next Saturday, 29th November. Just one week!

Oh yes, one interesting thing I saw yesterday as I checked out the Hirafu website.

Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu has upgraded a ski lift, so we can look forward to a new posh 6-person ride soon. The new lift brings us an adjusted name! The Japanese name is キング第3シックス ('King Number 3 Six'). A little awkward sounding, perhaps, but kind of makes sense.

For the English name of the lift, they are going with King Sixpack 3 (per official site and course map).

I just looked up six pack and found the following meanings:

1) a pack of six cans of beer or soft drink held together with a plastic fastener

2) a person's set of visibly well-developed abdominal muscles

My main thought was something along the lines of: if only there were some English-speaking people in the Niseko region that might help a Japanese company with their English translations.

Slight amusement and chuckles aside, it will be fun to ride the new ski lift, yey! Hopefully soon!
