The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday was a very fine day in the region. There is blue sky with some cloud around this morning, perhaps more cloud forming later on. It might also get rather windy again, but hopefully not enough to affect lifts. Later tomorrow and Wednesday rain is on the forecasts (with the chance of some light snow high up at Kagura again). GALA Yuzawa is now closed, so with only the Kagura ski area now remaining open we are truly in the last stretch of the season. It remains to be seen if Kagura can remain open until 21st May as planned. Snow cover, for now, remains good in the upper areas of Kagura. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. It has actually been quite chilly overnight and this morning, with Kagura reporting 2C as of 7am. After a few days of wet, generally grey and unfriendly weather conditions and poor visibility, today should be much nicer. There is a fair amount of thin cloud around early morning but some blue too and it is quite bright. We can probably expect more sun and gradually clearer skies during the day, warming up to around 20C in town later this afternoon. Tomorrow should be fine and sunny too. Kagura is back open this morning, via the Mitsumata Ropeway (which is now open from 8am on weekdays). You now need to do some walking on the way over to Kagura and also on the way back to Mitsumata. See below for details. Good exercise! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Kagura is still open! The main run is looking thinner and narrower by the day, but it's looking like they will be able to keep it open until the planned closing date of Sunday 21st May. Yesterday at 3pm, the JMA recorded a temperature of 32.8C in Yuzawa town (!). Today should be considerably cooler with the chance of some rain at times. Currently 18C after a warm overnight, and it is not forecast to rise much above that. Hopefully we will have more sun for the last weekend. (But not so hot please). Someone asked if the ski area can make any money keeping open as they are now. Really no idea about the economics behind it all. But they have a ropeway, a gondola lift, two quads and one or two pair lifts operating just to keep that one run open! We'll finish up our reporting for the season on Sunday morning. --------------- Kagura Official snow depth: - 50cm (top) - 0cm (base) Lifts operating: - Mitsumata Ropeway (7:30am weekends; 8:00am weekdays) - Mitsumata Number 1 quad lift - Mitsumata Number 2 romance pair lift - Kagura Gondola - Kagura Number 1 quad lift - Kagura Number 1 romance pair lift (*open when busy) Course available: - Kagura main run (see image below) Notes: The Mitsumata lifts are used to get to and back from the main Kagura area that is still open. - Yuzawa Now: Sunday 21st May 2023
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 795cm Posted on Sunday 21st May 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Today (Sunday 21st May 2023) is the last day of the ski season at Kagura, also meaning that today is officially the last day of the ski season in the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region. With a warm March and most ski areas in the region closing the best part of two months ago, the peak ski season now feels like ages ago... even for us. And it is perhaps surprising how long Kagura has been able to stay open this year. The main course is still good enough to enjoy a last day up there. And there seem to have been enough hardcore spring skiers and snowboarders around to justify it. You've got to admire the effort and determination all round. Kagura has been open for 165 days during the 2022-2023 season; only Yokoteyama in Shiga Kogen was open longer. There's really not much to add to the main season wrap-up (below). Yuzawa has been noticeably busier this last season, and the return of foreign visitors - particularly from Asian countries - was also very noticeable. We suspect that next winter there will be a further increase. A bumper season in terms of snowfall, starting early and ending late, would also be perfect. Let's have some of that! That's it for the Yuzawa Now reports this season. We hope you enjoyed reading them and found them helpful. The reports will be back in November as the 2023-2024 season approaches. --------------- The Kagura summer slope (Mitsumata) will be open on weekends and holidays from Saturday 15th July through Sunday 1st October and also on 14th and 15th August 2023. The GALA Yuzawa summer slope will be open on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays from Saturday 29th July through Sunday 10th September 2023 Yuzawa Now 2022-2023 season Data as of Sunday 21st May 2023 Total snowfall at base so far 795cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 51 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 51cm (5th January) November 2022 snowfall 0cm December 2022 snowfall 123cm reported on 14 days January 2023 snowfall 437cm reported on 20 days February 2023 snowfall 224cm reported on 15 days March 2023 snowfall 11cm reported on 2 days April 2023 snowfall 0cm May 2023 snowfall 0cm Previous report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 0cm Posted on Tuesday 7th November 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Hello, and welcome back to the Yuzawa Now reports for the 2023-2024 winter season. So... summer. It was really, really, really hot. And the heat and humidity seemed to go on forever, so it was such a relief when things eventually cooled down last month. While we had an 'almost cold' spell briefly, with Kagura reporting 3cm of snow on its upper areas on 22nd October, this last week has once again been unseasonably warm. I am sitting here wearing a T-shirt with the window open, and it's about 15C in town. With so much talk of temperatures being 'higher than usual' for large parts of this year, it is concerning. All we can do is hope that things will be different over winter. Things can, and often do, change quickly. And, of course, it is still very early. So we'll keep on being increasingly excited about all the snow to come! It looks like there might be some snowfall on the higher mountains again by the end of the coming weekend. This year Kagura hopes to open on Saturday 23rd November. We'll keep you updated with weather (and hopefully snow) news in the coming weeks. -------------------------------- Here are the planned opening dates for ski areas around Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. We have snow! It was raining last night but this morning we wake up to a blanket of snow on the ground. I just measured 12cm. The snow is still falling but it isn't expected to last long and sunny skies are due tomorrow and Monday. I wonder how much Kagura got? It's too early in the morning to hear anything from them, but we'll check later on today to see if there is anything to report before the scheduled report tomorrow. Evening update: Kagura is reporting 30cm of snow, and there is apparently enough for some Mitsumata runs to be open from tomorrow morning (Sunday 26th November). Here's what is planned to be open: Mitsumata Family course (1100m) Mitsumata Taikai (800m) Gondola Line (644m) Sunshine (266m) The Mitsumata Number 1 quad and Number 2 pair lift will be operating (as well as Mitsumata Ropeway, of course). The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning everyone. It is the first day of the official ski season in the region, with Kagura opening up a few lifts and runs this morning. The ski area reported 30cm of snow yesterday, with the following lifts and runs planned to be open for the day. - Mitsumata Family course: 30m width, 1100m length - Mitsumata Taikai (Competition): 30m width, 800m length - Gondola Line: 10m width, 644m length - Sunshine: 20m width, 266m length The snow on the Family and Gondola Line courses has not been groomed. - Mitsumata Ropeway (8:00am-4:00pm) - Mitsumata Number 1 quad lift (8:00am-3:45pm) - Mitsumata Number 2 pair lift (8:15am-3:30pm) (Apparently, some electrical issue with the Kagura Gondola prevents that lift from opening and a wider area being available). A special lift ticket price of 3000 yen is available for this early limited opening period. Oh yes, the weather! After that blast of winter yesterday (with just a slight amount more snow to report), this morning is a beauty. It's sunny, and there's not a cloud in the sky. It will be warmer again today and tomorrow. More snow is due later on Wednesday. -------------------------------- Here are the planned opening dates for ski areas around Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma. Kagura is open with the Number 1 pair lift backing up the quad on the main slope. Other than that, nothing really to report on this Saturday morning. It is going to be a warm day and while the temps should be lower from tomorrow there's not a whole lot of snow lined up on the weekly forecast, as it stands just now.
