There was a short period early afternoon yesterday when we saw some blue sky and even a bit of sunshine, but apart from that it has been snowing for most of the time since yesterday and apparently quite heavily overnight. Last night at 6pm we had 8cm at our measuring point and as of 8am this morning there is another 33cm on there. So that's 41cm since yesterday. That's over 120cm over the last three reports. Nice. Here's what ski areas are reporting this morning: - Kagura: 50cm - Yuzawa Kogen: 30cm - Maiko: 50cm A few ski areas around the area are again this morning mentioning avalanche and snow slide risk. The top area at Iwappara is closed this morning for that reason. It's natural to be very excited about all this sudden snow, but important to remember the inherent dangers out there while having the fun. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. For a while during the day yesterday it was snowing as heavily as it has been this season so far. Really coming down at a fast rate. By the evening, there was 26cm on our measuring point and there's a further 25cm on there this morning. Total of 51cm snowfall. That's more than what ski areas are reporting this morning but... it is what it is! Perhaps it is one of those times when they like to underplay the snowfall. Don't want to scare folks! It is still snowing this morning and will probably continue through the day today, but it's due to start easing off. We might get some clearer skies tomorrow and the day after. The biggest wish is that it remains cold so we can keep the quality of all this beautiful snow. In ski area news, the Tashiro Area and top lift at Kagura are closed today due to wind and weather conditions. They are reporting a temperature of -12C up top there. Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway (and the top section of that ski area) is also closed at the start of the day, but may open if conditions allow. The Yuzawa Snow Link connections between Yuzawa Kogen and GALA Yuzawa (Ropeway) and GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama (lift) will not be opening as planned on Saturday (7th January). The reason being given is staffing issues (ie. not enough people). It looks like it is being officially 'delayed', so not clear how that will play out. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Just like how sometimes when it doesn't snow, it doesn't seem to want to snow; sometimes, when it starts snowing, it doesn't seem to want to quit! We've measured another 33cm since the report yesterday (10cm by 6pm and a further 23cm overnight). That takes us to over 2m of observed snowfall - at town level - over the last five Yuzawa Now reports. Normal service seems to have resumed! Maiko are reporting 50cm of fresh snowfall since yesterday; other ski areas 20-30cm. While we thought it might have stopped by now, it is still snowing. It is due to ease off sometime during the day today and there might well be some sunshine tomorrow morning. (Though we might get more snow overnight into Sunday). It looks like Kagura, Naeba and Yuzawa Kogen are all opening as planned this morning after some disruption due to weather yesterday. The top area at Iwappara is still closed due to avalanche risk. No fresh snow being reported yesterday by ski areas (though we did get 2cm post-report yesterday morning, so that's where that is coming from!) This morning there is cloud around but also blue sky and sunshine. It's a fine morning. Fairly chilly early on, but due to be a mild day - hopefully not too warm. We might get some light snowfall overnight, though shouldn't expect much. Monday is a national holiday here in Japan (Coming of Age Day) and so it's a long weekend for many - and usually one of the busier weekends of the ski season. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Fine and sunny weather yesterday... and kind of warm, too. There was a bit of rain last night but it quickly turned into snow and this morning there is several cm of new snow on the ground. Kagura ski area is reporting 5cm (and a temp of -8C at top, but most places are not feeling that cold). It is snowing lightly early morning; the forecast is for cloudy conditions today. We are due more snow from tomorrow night and during the day on Tuesday. After that, by the end of the week there's some mild (warm) temps coming our way. Tomorrow is a national holiday here in Japan. So expect there to be more people about than there usually is on a Monday. Someone asked about the Southern Area at GALA Yuzawa and when it might open. No news to report there yet - that area is never always open, so it is not unusual for it to not be. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. First up, Kagura and Yuzawa Kogen are closed today. Naeba is also affected by wind conditions. Lifts at GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama are open but they may be moving at reduced speeds and there may be other lifts affected by wind during the day today. We have fresh snowfall. It started with rain again last night but this morning there is 17cm of fresh snow at our measuring point in Yuzawa and 12cm in Ishiuchi. Kagura aren't reporting a number this morning, but Maiko are saying that they have 30cm, presumably up top. Hopefully we will get more during the day today. From tomorrow we are due clearer weather and things gradually warming up to some unseasonably warm temps on Saturday (and quite possibly rain). It might even get up to +10C. Thankfully, it should quickly get colder again Sunday onwards. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We have another 10cm of fresh snow around town areas since yesterday morning. It was on and off during the day and continued into night time, though no further snow early morning. (Kagura are reporting 50cm since yesterday which sounds great!) Today starts with quite a lot of blue sky and some cloud. It's going to be a fine day. With the fresh snow yesterday, conditions should generally be good and it shouldn't get too warm (perhaps about +3C). Tomorrow is set to be warmer, then warmer still on Friday and Saturday. Good to see the chance of snow again on the forecasts for Sunday. Ski areas opening as planned this morning. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After some more rain/sleet, we got some proper snow in the evening yesterday and there has been around 5-10cm of snow across the region. Kagura and Naeba are reporting 10cm. Maiko are reporting 15cm. We have measured 9cm in Yuzawa and 5cm in the Ishiuchi area. All snow is always welcome, of course, though we could do with bigger numbers. There might be more snow tomorrow but the real chance of heavier snow looks due Friday night into Saturday. Fingers crossed. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Beautiful clear blue skies over the region this morning. There is some low-lying cloud in the Minamiuonuma valley just the north of Yuzawa, but apart from that it's clear blue and white. After some rain again we did get some snow last night. It has gone from the roads around town now, but that is what is added to this report. Currently -2C and forecast to get to around +4C during the day in town. Kagura is reporting 10cm of fresh snow since yesterday. The top lift at Muikamachi Hakkaisan has apparently run into some trouble (something to do with one of the lift pillars). This season that lift has been scheduled to be open on weekends and holidays, but it looks like it is going to be closed for an undetermined period. With that lift closed, you need to get the Ropeway each time you want to access the top area. Looking ahead, when can we expect more snow? Well, tomorrow night into Saturday is still looking promising and then early in the week looks like it might be good. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It is really good to see some fresh snow on the ground this morning. Once again, it feels like it is not as much as we were told to expect around town, but Kagura are reporting a very respectable 30cm. So that sounds like a decent refresh. The only other ski area reporting on snow numbers this morning is Maiko Snow Resort with 10cm. We have measured 12cm here in Yuzawa and 5-6cm just to the north in the Ishiuchi area of Minamiuonuma. It is continuing to snow lightly at the moment, but there have also been moments of clearing skies this morning in places. We are due at least light snow for the day. There is also some windy conditions on the mountains this morning and the Kagura and Tashiro Areas of the Kagura resort are both closed (and the Dragondola is also on hold). Other ski areas seem to be opening as planned, though there is the potential for some wind-related disruptions. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday, light snow (and sometimes a bit heavier) persisted for quite a lot of the day, even if it didn't amount to a huge amount in terms of new cm. This morning Kagura are reporting 3cm, would have thought there was more than that since yesterday morning. The 5cm reported in this report is post-report yesterday and in the evening. There has been no more overnight. It is bright and sunny this morning, but there is also a fair amount of thin cloud about and there are clearer skies in some directions. Forecasts are still shaping up and looking good for heavy snow around Tuesday and Wednesday. We can expect some very cold conditions and possibly very windy conditions as well, particularly on Wednesday. While we could do without the wind, a good old Yuzawa-like snow storm sounds very exciting. Don't let us down! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yes... we have fresh snow! It was snowing very heavily at times yesterday, particularly in the afternoon and evening, and very windy too at times. That has left us with 46cm of snow at our Yuzawa measuring point, and 31cm measured just to the north of Ishiuchi. (Very happy to see that fresh snow, of course, though still worth noting that it is not as much as the 'up to 70cm by 9am' that Niigata forecasted yesterday afternoon). It is still snowing, with more due through the day today. Very cold for us with a current temperature of -7C. Forecasts show us getting quite a bit more snow over the next run of days including the coming weekend. The only ski area reporting snowfall numbers this morning, as far as we can tell, is Maiko. They are reporting 40cm. A few ski areas are closed today due to the weather conditions (mostly citing wind). GALA Yuzawa and Kagura are not opening. The top area of Naeba is closed and ropeway and top area of Yuzawa Kogen are also closed. Other lifts at other ski areas may be delayed or closed, depending on how the weather turns out.
