  • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 22nd February 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this seas 748cm Posted on Wednesday 22nd February 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There has been more snow since yesterday. Kagura ski area is reporting another impressive 50cm and the lower Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 10cm. We have measured 15cm more since the last report. So it seems like there is another decent layer out there and once again quite a bit more the higher you go. It is a cloudy start to the morning, with a chance of some clearer skies and sun later; and clearer skies are likely tomorrow - at least at times and possibly all day (forecasts differ). The Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is back open this morning. The Tashiro Area of Kagura is also open again this morning, though the Tashiro-Kagura connecting course (and the top Number 5 lift at Kagura) are closed. Long night skiing at Kandatsu tonight (until 2am tomorrow morning). Tomorrow is a national holiday in Japan, so expect it to be busier than a 'normal' weekday. --------------- Ski area information for Wednesday 22nd February 2023 Ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region (listed in alphabetical order). The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After a mostly overcast day yesterday, this morning it is snowing and colder. The snow is on the wet side for the moment, with just a little on the ground so far. Both Kagura and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 10cm of fresh snow. We are measuring 2cm at town level. Hopefully there will be more today and tomorrow. Kagura are reporting it to be quite windy and that might affect one or two lifts (though the ski area is open). Clearer skies are due from Monday, so let's get as much snow in as possible! Limited visibility out there early morning. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 26th February 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this seas 769cm Posted on Sunday 26th February 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa, an early report today. Snow on and off yesterday that didn't really amount to much in terms of new cm (in town anyway), and more overnight giving us 20cm since yesterday morning. Having said that, Kagura are reporting an impressive 50cm of fresh snow this morning. Maiko Snow Resort, closer to town areas, report 10cm ('since last night'). We have measured 19cm at our measuring point in central Yuzawa, with just over 12cm to the north of Yuzawa in Ishiuchi. A big difference in the numbers there - it's a pattern that becomes more common later in the season as more snow falls at higher elevations than in town. Unfortunately the Tashiro Area of Kagura will be closed today due to strong forecast winds. The Kagura Area is probably also affected, but no confirmed announcement at the time of this report. GALA Yuzawa is opening. Yuzawa Kogen is still making a decision about the Ropeway. There is also a chance that other (particularly exposed) lifts might be affected by wind today. Check before heading out. Tomorrow, it will probably be sunny. --------------- Ski area information for Sunday 26th February 2023 Ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region (listed in alphabetical order). The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We had snow falling on and off yesterday. It was light at times and heavier at times too, and with some spells of clearer skies in places too. Kagura are reporting another 20cm of fresh snow this morning and we have measured 14cm since our last report. There is some cloud around this morning, but increasingly blue sky. We are expecting clear and sunny weather both today and tomorrow. Conditions should be very nice indeed this morning. Currently just above -2C in town. All ski areas should be open. Hopefully it won't warm up too much, though tomorrow is looking like it might get a bit toasty (and perhaps get to be approaching 10C in town). --------------- Ski area information for Monday 27th February 2023 Ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region (listed in alphabetical order). • Yuzawa Now: Friday 3rd March 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this seas 794cm Posted on Friday 3rd March 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We did get some rain yesterday, but we also have a really nice surprise this morning! Kagura is reporting 30cm of fresh snow, and there has been a layer of snow down to town too. 10cm on our measuring point. :) The day starts with the sun out, lots of blue sky and some cloud. The forecast for the coming week is basically slight variations on that. While it shouldn't warm up too much today and tomorrow, it will gradually be getting warmer next week. ----- Yesterday some time was spent starting to gather ski area actual opening dates for the 2022-2023 season in preparation for a 2022-2023 version of this data: Japan ski areas actual opening and closing dates (2021-2022 season) It appears that some ski areas in Japan have already closed. Some did actually plan to close at the end of February. Still, others have had an abridged season and really struggled with snowfall, to the point where they have been open, then closed, then open again, then closed - and never having much snow. It must be painful worrying about the snow like that every day. Really do feel for those places. While we might not have had as much snow as we usually expect here in this region, and when you are in the middle of a season it feels up and down, we still get a lot - even in a 'less-than-normal' season. With the 10cm added today, the total snowfall we have observed here in Yuzawa this season is at 794cm. Reading about those other places makes me feel we need to remember to appreciate and be thankful for all the snowfall we get. I remember saying it a few years ago (when we had less snow), but it's all precious! The completed 2022-2023 all-Japan data will be published before summer. --------------- Ski area information for Friday 3rd March 2023 Ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region (listed in alphabetical order). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this seas 795cm Posted on Saturday 4th March 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Fine weather yesterday - and some really nice snow to be found too - with clouds gradually appearing later in the day. And this morning, we have a bit of another surprise. No cm of snow is being reported by either Kagura or Maiko, but there has actually been a dusting that can justify 1cm in this report. It is a very cloudy start to the day with some light (wet) snow falling, which feels unexpected. The latest forecasts talk more of cloud than sun for today and the precipitation is not expected to last. The 'sunny every day' thing now seems due to resume from tomorrow. In the ongoing 'Yuzawa Fireworks' event, there is a display planned at Yuzawa Kogen today from 8:00pm. That is at the end of the 'Yuzawa Market' event that is happening along the onsen road of central Yuzawa and the station, with street food and drink available. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Fine, bright, sunny and hazy weather yesterday. It felt like it was more overcast later on - sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between hazy skies and cloud on a day like yesterday. Quite a lot of people out and about though enjoying the spring-like snow conditions. This morning, alas, we are getting some rain in town. We are hoping it won't last long, leaving us with a mainly just cloudy day. It is actually snowing at the top of Kagura and higher elevations, and even down a bit lower too in some places. Again, it probably won't last long. The Atema pair lifts (from the Atema car park) at Joetsu Kokusai are back open today for their last three days of the season. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 17th March 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 795cm Posted on Friday 17th March 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It is a really murky and grey kind of morning, and a bit damp too. It's forecast to be a mostly cloudy day. Kagura have posted some photos from the top of their ski area and it looks quite clear up there above the clouds. Precipitation is due overnight tonight though and into tomorrow... and it might even snow down to town level. Let's see. For those planning a weekend trip, Sunday is looking likely to be sunny once again. The stats that were posted in the report yesterday are here on the report today (for those who might have missed it). Also, the list lower down the page now includes more information regarding what remains open and planned closing dates. That information there will be checked (with official sources) and updated every morning. ----- Anyone who has been in Yuzawa recently knows that this season has been generally busier than it has been for a while. Before corona hit, the number of people using the ski areas in Yuzawa Town was around 2.4 million. (Think of that as ski lift tickets sold). That number dropped to about 1.6 million during the 2019-2020 season and just over 1 million during the 2020-2021 season. The numbers were up last year, back to around 1.5 million. As of the end of February 2023, the total number of people coming this season was 1,283,250. Here's how that statistic breaks down by ski area: Naeba: 273,040 Iwappara: 216,800 GALA Yuzawa: 167,520 Kandatsu Snow Resort: 161,700 Kagura: 136,200 Yuzawa Nakazato: 128,880 NASPA Ski Garden: 72,170 Yuzawa Kogen: 56,530 Nakazato Snow Wood: 45,690 Yuzawa Park: 21,470 Ipponsugi: 3,240 At the same point last year (up to the end of February), the number was 1,020,080, so this year's number is an increase of 263,170 - about 25%. Naeba was the ski area that enjoyed the most significant increase. Last year the corresponding number at the end of February was 177,060 visitors (with a season total of 252,540). The number of visitors from overseas has been very noticeable too and it feels like Taiwan, Hong Kong and Thailand have been particularly well represented! Like other regions, a staff shortage has faced some businesses this year as they try to cope with demand. Still, hopefully, that will be a temporary one... and it is undoubtedly a better problem to face than a lack of visitors. Anyway, it is great to see more people around again and, all being well, everything should be well and truly back to normal next season! (Regular heavy snow too, please!) --------------- Ski area information for Friday 17th March 2023 Ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region (listed in alphabetical order). We have done well for the rain to hold off in town so far (the roads look wet towards Naeba), but we might not be so lucky this afternoon and this evening. GALA Yuzawa has said that the gondola might be temporarily halted at times due to wind, but it is generally open. Kagura is open but it was only 11:40am when they started up the main Kagura quad. The Tashiro Area of the resort is closed. Naeba is also closed today due to the weather conditions.
