Reports are for some serious snow later in the day, and it already looks good now. Not too much wind and it's hard to see for the snow. This is just what we want! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . After the stars came out last night things really turned around, and we have at least 30cm of fresh at the base of Akakan! A very nice, partially expected but very welcome sight today. Needed, too; the snow was pretty nice, actually, on the hill yesterday, but there were some rocks and dirt popping out here and there. Now Akakan is reporting a 100cm base, which is always good news. Snow keeps on falling, so hopefully we can get closer to normal for this time of year soon! Not all reports are in, but I want to get these out earlier; I'll mark where no new info has come in (just add 30+cm to the depths!) The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I'm sitting here waiting for the official report to come in (which since you're reading this, have in fact arrived). The good, great, wonderful news is that we have snow on the ground. Not a whole lot, but enough to fire up the mighty snowthrower and for ski areas to start opening up (belated Merry Christmas present for all!). And they're starting to come in! Most everyone is open, at least a little bit. Kyukamura and Tangram are not open; Suginohara has not sent a report to the town or updated its own website today, so I don't know what they're doing. It's still snowing (yeah!) but the sun is also peeking out a bit (boo!). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I wasn't going to send out a report today, once I woke up and saw perfect blue skies, felt that warm sun on my face, and noticed that there was no additional snow on top of the 20cm or so out there. But, much to my surprise, three resorts have decided to open up on a VERY limited basis and let people get out there and scrape the snow off the grass! Not great skiing, perhaps, but a nice day to pose in your gear, bask in the sun and enjoy some nice views. Akakura Onsen is opening up the Yodel section, with one lift running. You have to take a shuttle bus up from the base area, of course (and just to let you know how little snow there is, that shuttle bus heads up on a road that should be covered with snow and under the ski runs). For the families, Kyukamura opens today, then closes until more snow falls. And Madarao has opened one run and one lift, and isn't saying if it will stay open (looks like it will). As I have written here in the past, snow conditions can be dodgy until Christmas or so. And, sure enough, the first heavy snow forecast is for Christmas Day..... The snow is falling today; looking a lot better, although the total on the ground is still only about 20cm (which is also the official word from Akakura Kanko). I see a lot of cars passing by the house loaded with skis; I thought maybe one of the areas decided to let people chew up the grass, but I think it's more likely that those drivers weren't checking SnowJapan diligently enough.... Just playing the waiting game now; all the areas would have liked to open by tomorrow, but they'll need a lot more base before they can get out the groomers and pack things down a bit. Regardless of your views on groomed vs. natural snow, they really do need to do that—there's a lot of interesting stuff out there on the hill that needs to be well covered. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Not that much to report except that there is in fact snow on the ground this morning. Not much, now; don't get too excited just yet, as nice as that white stuff looks. MAYBE three centimeters at the base of Akakan... But there is more predicted for later in the day, and it is colder than it's been so far. I hear that the managers from some of the local ski areas went over to Togakushi to get some divine intervention. Well, it is known as a power spot, and it is snowing now, so can't complain. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . We might have finished Golden Week and be in the second week of May, but it still almost feels like the tail end of winter. It is not generally warming up and a lot of changeable weather. And apparently it is actually snowing up in higher elevations early this morning! The changeable weather seems likely to continue through into next week. Just three ski areas in Shiga Kogen now remain 'part open' - Kumanoyu (though it seems to be closed today and tomorrow to re-open on Friday), Yokoteyama and Shibutoge. That leaves just a few lifts at Yokoteyama and Shibutoge remaining open for skiing/snowboarding. In the fine tradition of official information being more complicated than it really needs to be (!), here's what seems to be the situation as of now: Yokoteyama Number 2 Sky triple lift: until 18th May Yokoteyama Number 4 pair lift: until late May Shibutoge pair lift: until 25th May (I think!) The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Happy to announce the first real snow of the year today! Woke up to the sound of thunder rolling down from the mountains—always a good sign! Maybe 10cm on the ground as of 8 am, with a pretty good wind coming in from the south/west (it's always hard to tell here at the base of Mt. Myoko, as those western winds we really want to see bringing in the snow will appear southerly after swinging through the gap between Mt. Kurohime and Mt. Myoko. The ski areas officially opened this Monday, with the traditional ceremony followed by the usual all-day party. Hard life up here in the hills.... The snow is coming down pretty steadily now. Perhaps we really will get that first solid base for the season? The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Just a quick note before we enter another weekend - just a few more ahead! And things have changed a lot in the few days since the last report. We've got cherry blossoms blooming on the roads leading up to the resort, blue skies for the weekend and a lot less snow. There is still plenty out there, but spring is definitely here at last. What could be better: warm winds, blue skies, and white snow. Nice to see the big crowds the last weekends, and hopefully a lot of people will be out for the party in the coming days. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A nice Golden Week day for a last report for the season: the snow is going, going, gone! Akakan and Seki are still open today, though, with lots of people out there enjoying the last rides of the year (in the resorts, of course; the backcountry is still good out there, although that heavy snow of this season is really disappearing faster than we might have expected). It was a good snow year for Myoko - nice to be the national leader in the SnowJapan reports! (Check out the observed snow data page linked to from here for evidence!) With somewhere on the high side of 16 meters, that was a lot of snow out there. The patterns seem to be changing a bit, though; we didn't see the ongoing days and days of snow that are common here. Heavy snowfalls, and a lot more wind than we normally expect (at least judging from the north side of my house, which was completely buried by drifts, a first in 10 years in this location). We also saw a real jump in the number of international travelers this year, which had some people a little bit nervous - as in, "can we keep our local feeling?". For the most part, though, local hotels and restaurants have had a few years to sort of ease into the change, so most people are pretty happy about the growth. Part of it, too, is that people are coming from more and more destinations—lots of North Americans and Northern European guests, as well as from Asia (still not as many as in many other destinations). What's the old thing about change being the only constant? With poor snowfall in a lot of places around the world, looks like Japan can only become more popular—and that's good for Japan for things beyond the snow season, too. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . There is wind out there today; the flags on the bamboos marking the driveway are out at 90° and flapping away. Hard to tell how much snow has fallen - the wind has blown the fresh away in some areas, piled it up in others (let's say a good average of 20cm). It's also blowing in from the north, and a quick glance at the Coast Guard's website tells us that the wind is at 20 meters per second (really fast for those unfamiliar with the system). Be ready for some lift closures, especially the gondolas. Only Ikenotaira, with 260cm base and -3°, has reported today. Hey, at least the rain that we had yesterday is gone!
