Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 2cm
Snowfall at base this season 1314cm

Posted on Wednesday 21st March 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

All that talk of heavy snow (NHK!) has not come to anything in Myoko (although the TV did show us the “heavy” snow falling in Kanagawa). The day is still just starting, so things could change… but I doubt that there will be a lot of new snow. There was a band of fresh snow right across the mountain, though, from just above the Akakura Kanko Hotel (about 1000 meters, right in the middle of the hill) up to the top of the lifts, so around 1550 meters. So I’m adding 2 cm just to be optimistic and accurate.

The gondola at Suginohara has closed due to wind, while Akakan’s is still going. Could change if that wind picks up a bit more, so keep an eye on the reports. Looks like precipitation is just coming in from the southeast as we type, with the far mountains now obscured.
