Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 4cm
Snowfall at base this season 1212cm

Posted on Monday 19th February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

Beautiful, sparkly flakes on the surface of the snow this morning; we got about 4cm in total, but it was of real snowflakes (six branches, about 2mm across, the whole thing).

Yesterday’s heavy snow turned out to be very compact and dense, so climbing was much easier than expected for the offsite set.

Today is just a really nice, sunny day; a few clouds moving in, and the weather reports say there is a chance of snow.

Just have to see how much that warm sun affects the snow surface through the day, especially in the backcountry.
