Not very helpful and sarcastic as usual.

Perhaps these people wanting to know more than just what the basic newspaper saying about it.

I don't know about it much myself but will try to post when I do.

If you followed the helpful advice instead of whining at me, you'd find this article, conveniently at the top of the search results, that is full of information;

http://www.weeklypost.com/030630/030630a.htm

IceEiji, do you know the expression 'casting pearls before swine'? Hey everybody, just wait till Eiji has finished searching for ya. Just hang on now...

IceEiji: I think a similar phrase might be "neko ni koban"?

I can understand the frustration felt when people on an internet forum cannot do a simple search on the internet...

rachael, that's true. But since the basic information is so easy to find using simple search techniques, in a forum you really have to hazard an opinion or a discussion starter. Just asking everybody else to supply you with reading materials is somewhat parasitic.

That article in the Weekly Post (now there's a weird publication) is unusually detailed. It presents an aspect of Japanese society that I'm totally unaware of. I can't remember actually having met a university student here. I had the impression that the craving for prestige in Japanese society became somewhat unfashionable after the Bubble years, but it appears not. Sadly, gang rape in stairwells doesn't seem very prestigious behaviour...

I read a bit about that in a book called Speed Tribes, which documents the shadow side of Japan, though there was nothing about rape. (The author probably wasn't aware). However it did go into some of the scams and the easy street life the students have and how inept they usually are (and these are the people who eventually run this country). Basically Waseda is the Uni everyone wants to get into cos it's the most prestigious. Many politicians and company presidents and other high ranking business people come from there. As a Waseda graduate you're automatically better than graduates from anywhere else and thus are eligible for high promotional posts, and will be the first that companies will want to employ.

My American supervisor/management buffer at one the 'prestige' establishments I taught at was a (foreign, obviously) graduate of Waseda. Besides being an Uncle Tom gaijin, he was a complete moron. All he seemed to have learned from his intercultural education was never to stand with his hands in his pockets.

Thanks , for the link. The story was a bit reactionary though wasn't it

"Cruel crime cases are increasing in Japan. Have the Japanese people lost their desire for justice ?"

Lets make some more sweeping generealisations and stir up a bit of a 'moral panic'.

I suppose that's what happens if your first information source is the Web/ Newspapers or TV, without engaging peoples opinions first hand...... Anyway after a bit discussion with my colleagues, I'm fully updated.

I read a few other pieces on this too.

Is anyone really surprised that this kind of thing goes on when there is so much legal porn depicting this sort of thing.

I think they missed the point of censorship when they were deciding on the rules.
