OK my vpod is now full of all my legic cd collection and nice and neat.

Now I want to start downloading stuff, something I've never done before. So, can someone hold my hand and give me some pointers.

Do I need to buy Kazaa Plus ($30) or something? Is that the best?

I really don't know much about this and I know it's been covered a bit before, but any advice would be really cool!!

Thanks all

Do a search for Kazaa Lite. Download and install it. (Be sure not to download Kazaa - it is truly a blight). Then start searching.

Be sure to search for Thievery Corporation, Groove Armada, Zero 7, Spoon, Powderfinger, and other good music.

Check 'Automatically search more'. Download in controlled bursts - it's best to go for songs of which there are several available. If in 'Traffic' it says 'More sources needed', delete it and try again later. When you've downloaded a bunch of one or two artists, clear your Traffic window of all downloads and start again. Don't let your Traffic window fill up with non-downloading selections - it slows things down completely. You can also try WinMX, although the interface is far less intuitive.

Now I have questions for you. If I were to get an iPod, could I just specify a folder on my PC and leave the iPod to suck down and catalog everything in it? And, what formats does iPod play? Does it do anything other than MP3?

Ocean:

AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 (32 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible, AIFF (Mac only) and WAV

(Its all on www.ipod.com) (--- they got that url wrong, should be www.vpod.com I reckon)

So this Kazaa Lite - looks like its about $20 a year, right? or 40 forever. Or did you get a "free" version? ;\)

Not sure about the folder thing, but it seems that way. I use the itunes that comes with the vpod.

if you are after small files (ie. music, not movies/software), then 'soulseek' is the best. you can download whole albums from the same user and so on.

for movies/games etc I use 'kazaa lite', which you can download for free. just do a search for it.

'edonkey' is really good for finding unusual files, though it is a bit slower. i use that for getting xbox games and the latest survivor episodes.

You need a modded xbox to run pirate games.

I found WinMX to be a load of crap, but maybe I was just unlucky the days I tried it.

Soulseek also has chat rooms for japanese stuff and you can find japanese users in there if you want movies/music/porn or whatever takes your fancy.

Ocean to answer one of your questions, yes if you download songs from Kazza lite to your iTunes music folder (or if using other programs to sync with your iPod, the specified music folder for that program) then the next time you sync your iPod with your computer they will automatically be transferred and cataloged according to the file info. Nice and simple! The "sucking down" process is very fast via firewire, around a second a song.

Actually I am gonna have to take back what I said about WinMX.

I tried it last night, and got it to work in Japanese on my English OS. Now I can search using kanji/kana and get 1000s of results. it means I can get all the latest movies WITH Japanese subtitles so I can watch them with my girlfriend more easily. I'm well chuffed, and will be throwing away my Tsutaya members card.
