I didn't really get to use computers until my early twenties, and I started using the Internet in my late twenties, so as a young person, I had no idea what some of these disgusting things were that you read about in your Inbox every day.

Before my paper round started, I did try to round out my education by flipping through Fiesta and Men Only in the Kiosk, but the boss wasn't very education-minded.

So I guess there maybe some forum peeps who might be just young enough to have grown up with the Internet. What I want to know is, what if anything, did your parents do to preserve your innocence, and/or frustrate your curiosity? And if you are a parent yourself, how far do you think it's reasonable to go to keep tabs on your children's Internet habits?

when i was of an age when it would matter what i was doing on the internet my parents knowledge about computers and the internet was very limited (email was about all they used). so i dont think they had the capability to keep any tabs on me or my brothers. plus we're responsible ;\)

i think i had the meeting-people-off-the-internet-talk but thats about it.

Those were the days... sneaking a peek at the porn mags in the shop and hoping that nobody would see you. God the internet would have been great as a 13 year old.

Not much advice to offer sorry other than explorer settings and netnanny which I suspect that any determined kid can get around.

I think I'd be strict with my own kids.

Lots of kids now have parents who don't know much about the net and stuff (like my brother) and so they can do so much. So I suppose that will change.

How about you Ocean11 with your son?

My son is 6 and doesn't really understand the Internet yet, although he thinks it's cool when he asks me about something and I can show him an explanation or photo on my computer. (The other day he was asking me about how big cobras get, and I Googled it for him. One of the pictures that came up was an 'art' photo of a lady with a snake coming out of her bumhole. Ahem, scroll scroll. If he saw it, he didn't let on.)

He's also learning basic computer stuff at school, and I expect they'll get around to the Internet at some point. I have no doubt that they'll do a thorough job covering the safety 'n morality aspects of it.

In a few years time I'll probably give him his own computer with Internet access. Then I'll agonize over how to handle what he looks at. I'm inclined not to pry too much, and just try to make sure he maintains a balanced view of what he sees. I don't want to be a hypocrite and stop him looking at what I would have looked at if I had had the opportunity. But it's important that he can ask about what he sees, because some stuff on the Net has the potential to unhinge you. Clearly that goes for Net socializing as much as static content.

How are the teachers at school? I have a good Japanese friend teacher who is stressed out over having to teach computers when she knows zilch about them herself. Even though she knows nothing, shes expected to teach it, and she hates it.

This might be slightly off topic now, but in Japan the senior high schools, at least in my area, have no idea about computers. For example, 2 years ago I did a lesson in the computer room about the World Cup (June 2002). I went in the computer room again last week for the first time since then, and guess what? All my notes were still written large on the whiteboard!!! I'm assuming that means the room hasnt been used for 2 years! In another SHS close to here, they havent even unpacked the computers! Theres just a room with loads of unopened cardboard boxes full of computers!

I think if I had a kid I'd just look for some kind of net-nanny type program so you can at least limit the amount of porn etc they look at. Also I would not allow applets/java etc which is how a lot of chat clients run. You can probably password protect newsgroup clients, or just make the kid do all his emailing online.

I think you're wrong there bobby12. Even elementary schools have frequent PC lessons now, so I cant imagine that the room wasn't used.

Maybe they like you're writing, or they just don't use the whiteboard.

The elementary school has very basic lessons using some sort of multimedia quiz software. My boy has a few years of Doom and Aerostyle behind him, so it's no sweat using a mouse. They don't seem to box up their computers at night (that is just so typical of the screwed up priorities of education anywhere. Fill their heads with forgetable stuff for exams, but don't teach them anything practical. They should be teaching basic computer science too, but they don't).

Toque, you disgust me. Search Google images with 'cobra' - you can't fail to see it (unless you have SafeSearch on). Deviant.

that was some unusual stuff.

I quote

"I had become fascinated by the various reactions of the human face while being asphyxiated, so in 2001 I set about documenting as many willing participants in this experiment as I could.

The rules for filming this project were simple- all the strangulation had to be real, but could be stopped at any moment by the subject being strangled.

The images here include a portrait of my Mother who found the whole experience quite exhilarating and ended up asking to be strangled several times."

I know some people are into strangulation sexually - take Micheal Hutchence for example who died doing it (allegedly?). Doesnt strike me as particularly enjoyable.

Whatever it is clearly runs in the family.

I was just strangled on the weekend. In Roppongi. Sitting on a railing at noon after club closed waiting to go to the next one.

A russian chick came up to me and we started talking. She reached for my throat and grabbed hard. I couldn't breath or say anything. Scary. I was loaded so my reflexes were pretty slow. But she let go finally and asked if that turned me on. I said NO and then asked her if it turned her on. She mumbled something and then did it again much to the shock of the myself and the people around me. But the bouncers rescued me and sent me on to another club.

lol.gif Ah Toque it sounded like you had a big ol' seedy weekend in the 'pong. You should have told some of the Tokyo crew you were coming down, we could have taken you to some decent places (where the strangulation is optional)
