Well, yesterday was the first day since October 22nd when there were absolutely no earthquakes in Niigata Prefecture. (Can you believe that? Imagine living in Nagaoka or Ojiya or Kawaguchi where you felt multiple quakes every single day for more than 6 weeks eek.gif )

Anyway, cause to be cautiously happy I think. clap.gif

(Although having said that, there have been 2 small ones today in Nagaoka). But it does seem to be gasping it's last breath.

Congratulations!

I've been following the happenings over there closely. I can't imagine what you've been going through. I used to think it was 'cool' when a 5.5 would hit N. Honshu, but to have that happen every day would be unsettling. I wish the best for everyone in that region.

Got a message the other day from a friend in Misawa about the 7.0 that hit in S. Hokkaido. She said it shook here awake and scared her quite a bit.

Best of luck to you and the rest of the residents of the region. It can't be fun.

Sorry, but I cannot see how anyone could possibly think that a 5.5 earthquake is 'cool'.

Unless they had a warped mind.

I'd been waiting for that "no quake day" for about 5 weeks, it took long enough. Seems we can expect very small ones to carry on for a bit longer though yet - ones that can only really be felt right in the "central zone" or whatever you want to call it.

I'm a geomorphologist.

I live for 'earthly' actions.

It's a studious thing.....

sorry, no offense meant. I've just always been a geo geek and that may be hard for some people to understand.

Had a nice little shaker here in Alaska today. No damage, no injuries.

I've always wondered that if people knew the geology of their region if they would have started towns there (tokyo, san francisco, etc....) To have the largest city in the world sitting on the convergence of four major plates - yikes! HUGE disaster waiting to happen (as has been discussed here).

Again, read my above post people. I am totally sympathetic and couldn't imagine going through what the Niigata region has recently. Where I was in Japan, a 5.5 was no big deal. A 5.5 happening every day, wondering if it was going to be another big one would be unsettling to say the least. I just hope everyone is getting on okay in that area.

I think earthquakes are fascinating too, although it's not a popular viewpoint.

If you have the luxury of going through an earthquake and coming out unscathed, it's hard not to be deeply impressed, as well as to be curious about the mechanics of it. That in no way implies callous disregard of people who suffer damage.

Yeah me too! I think I need more time to feel something like that.

On another encouraging note, no aftershocks, not even little baby ones, in central Niigata-ken the last 3 days. \:D

It seems like other areas are getting some of their share now

That Yamamoto bloke was on the tv tonight saying that the chance of even a medium-sized aftershock coming now is very low. That was a good thing to hear. Now there are just none, one or two very small ones each day and that is trailing off as well.
