mina2 6
Three men died and one remains unconscious after being rescued Sunday from a mountain in Nagano Prefecture, police said. They were members of a group of five skiers who went missing the previous day while moving to Itoigawa, Niigata Prefecture, from the mountain. The fifth descended on his own Sunday morning. Police identified the dead as Kenichiro Makino, 68, of Saitama Prefecture, Teruo Sato, 66, of Niigata Prefecture, and Hidetoshi Miura, 57, also of Saitama. The five men went missing Saturday when they left Nagano's Otari village for a hot spring resort in Itoigawa, but they returned after being caught in an avalanche at around noon Saturday, police said. They had only light equipment for the day trip. A police helicopter found the three in a snow field in Nagano Prefecture Sunday morning and then they were confirmed dead at hospital, due apparently to freezing, according to police. mattlucas 0
I was just looking over on the avy forum and counted 16 dead in the North Alps since March 14 Deaths due to avalanches and bad weather Why are so many people going out in poor weather? When the weather turns bad why are people not turning around?
Yuki's Passion 1
>Why are so many people going out in poor weather? When the weather turns bad why are people not turning around? Dunno either mate - thought you and FF made a good call the last time the 3 of us went out. If you cant see, winds at 100k/hr, why would you want to continue? The people heading out into the BC are making piss-poor decisions. Hate to say it, but they need to be made an example of what not to do. Im still bummed to hear bout Marc
Fattwins 0
The winter kept many BC skiers at bay cause of the conditions. tons of snow too dangerous then tons of rain and too dangerous. Might be that many people are trying to achive goals that were set long ago. rain will and has knock the new snow off of the ice layer. now if the sun can come out then we might get the conditions that we need. yes rain melts the snow but we need winter to be winter or spring to be spring. too much of the 2 mixing together jacks up the danger off-piste everywhere even in the trees. mattlucas 0
Well said FT It's spring now And we need spring to be spring I think a lot of Japanese mountain people are treating this snowpack like a normal safe spring snowpack when in fact a little more care is needed. As for the weather people need to stop and look at things. Better to return to ski than never ski again
