sunrise 0
I haven't skied for 7 years, but I'll have a month in Hokkaido this season - ski lengths seem to go in and out of fashion. What's happening nowadays? Shorter skis, longer skis? Last time I was skiing on 175cm or maybe that was 165cm, gosh can't remember now (I'm 63cm tall, and am reasonably good intermediate skier, or at least I was...!). Also, anyone recommend boots that won't kill someone with large calves? thanks.
Markie 0
My goodness, sunrise, you are mighty short! Is that a typo or are you pulling our legs.
Fattwins 0
Size is shorter but the skis are fatter and this makes the difference. Most powder skis are no longer than 190 nowadays. Do a little research via the web.

Ooops! That *does* make me look mighty short, doesn't it! Okay, then, add an extra 100 cm in front of the 63 to get a better idea of my real height! (when I'm not feeling short, that is ;-)

danz 0
5 yrs ago I had a pair of 203 and 198 cm skiis... now my new pair is 180...if that gives you a clue... danz
sunrise 0
I just checked my old skis - they're 180s (longer than I thought). I guess that means I should think of getting something around 160s or maybe 165s... I'll start looking into it, thanks. Ah, this brings me to another question for anyone who wants to answer: - I assume that I should get new bindings and not use the old ones even if they seem to work okay? Also, how about poles? Will it make a difference upgrading them also? Excuse the lack of knowledge here. I've really been out of the race.... Thanks.
mogski 0
Bindings generally are recommended to be changed every 5 years as the srpings in them become tensioned out and all flabby like an old mans...well they just don't work like they should do. Furthermore no shop will touch them and you will probably have real problems getting them put on any new skis. Poles, if you like em light(which is the way to go) invest in a cheap pair from last year or the year before. They are only goign to bend or break at sometime. Good luck. BTW, I am 195cm and I ski on 185cm fat twins.
badmigraine 0
"...tensioned out and flabby like an old man's..." I resent that remark mogski! I was tensioned out and flabby as a YOUNG man. None of this age discrimination please!! Nice review of Kandatsu by the way. In addition, I should warn everyone not to drop their locker key behind the bench back in the rotenburo. Otherwise, you have to go naked in search of someone with a polehook or very long thin arms. ----------- Asleep by day Drunkard by late afternoon Unemployed by choice
mogski 0
I should add to that badmig's did all this searching out and retaining of the key stark naked! Full monty on that tensioned out and flabby...uh well you get the picture.
Ocean11 0
I think I might be a challenged in those circumstances to remember the Japanese for 'pole-hook'. Walking around like that gesturing and saying 'Eh to, bo aru? Bo!?' might invite misunderstanding...
damian 0
Ocean, I am suprised that you have not done this already! Here is a top and bottom photo of todays skis:
Ocean11 0
That just illustrates the difference between the sayings "Great minds think alike" and "Fools seldom differ". Of course I had thought of that...
Markie 0
Oh dear, mine don't look anything like that. I guess I'm out of date (not only out of a date). Now I have to budget these in as well for this season....hmmm.
jared 0
get skis roughly eye to head level and dont get giant fat skis i(ie pocket rockets)unless you plan to be going into the powder.
Fattwins 0
Talk to the guy/gal in the shop you dont have to buy 165s you can go a bit longer if you want to. If you get better than you might want new gear. The new equip is aesy to learn on nowadays. Do a little looking around.
