Unless a new train line has been built, that's not entirely true is it.

Actually there is a direct train to Hakuba from Shinjuku....but it only runs once a day and takes about 4 hours.

Strictly speaking, Minty is right in that Hakuba is "a train ride" from Tokyo on the Azusa. Only one a day but you won't have to lug any gear between changes. You can get a bus from Shinjuku too which goes maybe six or eight times a day in winter.

Unless you want to shop for gear in Tokyo first, I think Chuo Taxi direct from the airport is best though. They give you VIP chauffeur treatment. I wouldn't get the Shinkansen myself with gear. Too much hassle.

Thanks for your help everyone. Yes I am new to this forum, and it's awesome.

I hate travel agents, and if the airlines are taking the piss and charging the earth for flights, that will make my mind up pretty quickly. And f I'm going to get good snow in both places, brilliant.

Thanks for the links Iiyamadude.

Whilst we are on the subject of asking impossible questions...anyone care to have a stab at these?

Can fat people go skinny dipping?

Can you be a closet claustrophobic?

Why is the word "abbreviation" so long?

Is it possible to be totally partial?

What's another word for thesaurus?

If you are cross-eyed and have dyslexia, can you read all right?

When it rains, why don't sheep shrink?

Should vegetarians eat animal crackers?

If someone with multiple personalities threatens to kill himself, is it considered a hostage situation?

Would a fly without wings be called a walk?

I don't know where you buy your chips but back home they are much cheaper.

At current rates, 1.60 is about 200 yen. Cheap chips!
