Curt 1
He has retired. Perhaps took the "go back to your country" catcalls to heart.
thursday 1
What a brat eh. Number 3 on all time wins. Not too bad either.
Thundercat 60
Who wants to wager that his was given the option of 'quit on your own or we'll fire you'. This whole drunken rampage story seems a little far fetched.
thursday 1
wonder what he'll get upto back in Mongolia.

NoFakie 45
The first bother he got into was when he played football while out "injured". It was the Japanese Foreign Ministry that invited him. Its an open secret that lots of sumo is fixed. Honourable is not the word.
iiyamadude 6
I don't doubt you Mr Wiggles but why do they insist on blabbering on about honour blah blah blah.
thursday 1
Sumo wrestlers, the modern day Samurai... barf...
Slippery Jim 65
Not a fan of his bully-boy attitude, but there's something slimey about this.
RobBright 35
Thought his first transgression was he touched another man's mawawari or top knot?
RobBright 35
Am gonna miss the guy - he may not be Japanese, but heck, he tried to drag Sumo kicking and screaming into the modern day. Wearing a suit instead of a kimono? Mega! Wanting to increase the standard of the salaried rikishi? Respect! Playing football when injured? Who are we to talk? How many of us have pulled a sickie and gone skiing/snowboarding?
bobby12 0
He is a sportsman in a religious ceremony. Sumo should clear up this grey area - is it a sport or a ceremony? If the former, anything goes. If the latter, make it clear so that another asashoryu doesn't come along.
Nisoko 6
It's a sport/ceremony. And gaijin can't understand - as one of the commentators on an early morning show just pointed out.
mina2 6
I think sumo is a ridiculous, 'specatacle'. Listening to the discussions now on tv, how stupid do they sound going on about tradition, 'hinkaku' and the rest. I
NoFakie 45
This is just the latest in a number of sumo scandals, so maybe they're making an example of him to try and draw a line. The real scandal was that trainee who was beaten to death.
Thundercat 60
The JSA try to make out that guys like Asashoryu are the cause of problems in sumo. They aren't... they are only symptoms of the problem. The real cause of all these problems in sumo is the super corrupt JSA themselves. Hey fellas, why not try leading by example for a change! grungy-gonads 54
I'm a gaijin. Therefore I simply cannot grasp all the issues here.
Go Native 70
I loved watching Asashoryu myself. Couldn't care less about any of the other stuff. He was awesome and I'll certainly miss him.
bobby12 0
It is going to fxxk boring now with only mr charisma hakoho around. Expect 2-3 years of boredom and hakoho zensho's before a decent challenger comes along.
RobBright 35
Reckon kotooooooshu will be promoted soon.
Tubby Beaver 209
Sumo is well boring! Good cultural thing to see once, but not repeatedly. Totally fixed as well, there's a chapter in Freakonomcs about it, something about any fighter who needed a win to progress to the next level, managed to get that win in the next fight....everyone of them!! How likely is that?
bobby12 0
In Freakonomics it says that if you look at the stats for fights where one guy is on a 6-6 record, he wins 80% of the time, suggesting that there is 'unspoken fixing' going on. If you look at the next fight between the same two fighters (ie. in the next basho) the loser of the 1st fight wins the 2nd one 80% of the time. (the numbers above are probably wrong but the principle was like that). 6-6 record is significent because if you get a 6-7 record you may be demoted.
Tubby Beaver 209
yeah I couldn't recall the actual figures they said, but they did say that it defied belief. Crap "sport" anyway
RobBright 35
yep - didn't it "inspire" a fixing investigation?
grungy-gonads 54
One of the only sports where you can be a bit fat slob. Like darts. Or, maybe not quite the same. Though both have that religious aspect.
