BagOfCrisps 24
I would be interested to know and where Japan ranks in that table. Any thoughts?

SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan#Andrew 6 Posted December 10, 2009 SnowJapan Admin Share Posted December 10, 2009 Interesting timing there BagOfCrisps. Figures provided by the UNWTO (World Tourism Organization) and country respective tourism agencies. Anyone guess what the top 3 are?
BagOfCrisps 24
Unexpected numbers there, but thanks. Sounds like a thrilling report (what you reading that for?) USofA number 1?
SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan#Andrew 6 Posted December 10, 2009 SnowJapan Admin Share Posted December 10, 2009 Got one of them there JNTO meetings later this week so need to study up on all these reports they've sent. Tons of numbers. I'll let some other guesses on that top 3. Top 3 reasons for foreigners visiting Japan - any guesses?
BagOfCrisps 24
I bet "culture" is on that list, nice and wide subject. Japanese food?
Jynxx 4
mmmm... without any info, myself would say Learning Japanese Plastic surgery seasonal employment - that's probably out last year. snow.

thursday 1
Why? those are the options on the landing card
SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan#Andrew 6 Posted December 10, 2009 SnowJapan Admin Share Posted December 10, 2009 OK for the reasons visiting Japan, lets go with the responses from 15,000 people who answered a JNTO questionnaire at 9 international airports in 2008.
big-will 7
Plastic surgery? I thought Japanese went to Korea for that?
Jynxx 4
Was thinking more like Thais, Singaporians coming to Japan.
thursday 1
15,000 being such a representative population and questionaired, would mean whites only as they would be identified and questioed by the JNTO. My guess: 1) Skiing, Aussies on the increase etc. 2) Shopping 3) Sightseeing

SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan#Andrew 6 Posted December 10, 2009 SnowJapan Admin Share Posted December 10, 2009 That's definitely one of the things I've highlighted to ask about, that China number. The report is basically all inclusive though simply the number of foreigners visiting.

The numbers from "home visits" in Hong Kong account for 2 mil per long holiday alone.
SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan#Andrew 6 Posted December 10, 2009 SnowJapan Admin Share Posted December 10, 2009 No, it's almost certainly not a 'whites only' questionnaire. The Asian market accounts for over 70% of all foreigners visiting Japan. But I'll ask that qeustion as well. So little time to prepare.. you're helping me out here, thanks! thursday 1
I read a JNTO paper a few years back and they were saying Japan had 10mil oversease visitors per year. How has that figure dropped to of the scale now?
thursday 1
And not to be really pedantic, HK had 26mil visitors in 2008. Source: HK Tourism Board.
SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan#Andrew 6 Posted December 10, 2009 SnowJapan Admin Share Posted December 10, 2009 No worries, thursday - they're not my numbers! I'm just reading the report here and thinking of points for discussion. Thanks for that HK number, it will be interesting to see why those numbers differ. The 2010 target for Japan was 10 million. Last year was the most up until now at 8,351,000, but it looks like it will be about 7 million in 2009. That's what it seems to be saying here.
Jynxx 4
Mainland Chinese coming to Japan to buy things that's been made in China ? I had seen a lot of mugs for the tourist @The Rocks , Sydney was made in Japan. never mind, I side track. Luxury goods shopping they can go to HK. Visits to China ? Great Wall, Forbidden City, sourcing manufacturers and temporary posting (business)
thursday 1
Jinx, Mine would be, in no particular order: Greatwall, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Ming Tombs, TienAnMun Square
SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan#Andrew 6 Posted December 10, 2009 SnowJapan Admin Share Posted December 10, 2009 OK got to go soon but here's the Japan reasons 1 Shopping 2 Food 3 Onsen (esp. with Asian visitors) 4 Historic buildings 5 Nature/scenery 6 Experiencing Japanese culture/crafts 7 Experiencing Japanese cities Anyway, that's what the report says. I'm sure it will be a fun fun meeting.
Go Native 70
A meeting with the JNTO fun? You'll be lucky if half of em remain awake through the meeting. One of the most useless organisations I've ever had the misfortune of dealing with. Little wonder to me Japan has so few foreign visitors...
