Fattwins 0
Tsu I hate to beat a dead horse but Tateyama will have skiing well into the summer.
soubriquet 0
I'll be up for it, but I can't manage Saturdays.
SKI 15
Not much of a place but good feeling to be out there in summer when it's 35 plus further down

Gassan is on the western side of Yamagata. At 2000m it's not particularly high, but because of its location it gets an enormous amount of snow. It's closed in the winter because you can't get in. Tubby Beaver 209
ah ok, I remember that photo you posted b4. I have seen a similar one on a JR tourism poster as well. Is there snow all year round then Soubs?
soubriquet 0
I've been up in September and found patches here and there, but not skiable.
Tubby Beaver 209
when does it close for skiing then?
soubriquet 0
thursday Gassan closes around the end of June. It's really more of an oddity than a great sliding experience. Fair enough coming north if you want to, but I'd suggest combining a day on the snow with a day sightseeing and an onsen or two. Zao has a nice rotenburo, the volcano is worth seeing, and Yamadera is a must see.
tsondaboy 0
I was thinking something like that soubs. More than the skiing Gassan experience, I would like to go to Yamadera area. By the way, were is samurai lately, is he still around?
soubriquet 0
No idea about samurai. Maybe he only comes out in the winter, but reading between the lines of some of his posts he seemed a little restless.
thursday 1
that dude's got a gun, better buy him lots of and not make him otherwise

tsondaboy 0
It seems I will be going a lot in Tateyama from now on. I will be setting up instruments in the Kamikochi Kurobe areas. In about 2 weeks from now I will have to do the first trip there to check for suitable locations. Then at least once a month till October for maintenance.
Fattwins 0
Finally and you will fall in love!!!
tsondaboy 0
Soubs, do you still keep in touch with samurai? Do you Yamagata guys get together for drinks?
soubriquet 0
Never met samurai. I arranged to meet up with daver two seasons ago, but there was a mix-up with the station names and it didn't happen. Daver's gone now. It's over 40km from Yamagata to Oishida, and with a few beers inside it isn't doable.
Stuntcok 0
Since Kagura is running uphill capacity to the top anyway, they should put in MTB courses on the lower half of the hill, methinks. Morning skiing and then afternoon MTB would be good...
