I like expensive and posh when I can, which is not often. But for something special... \:\)

Don't listen to the foolish likes of Dims*, barry - and welcome to the forums. wave.gif

Anyway, I have not forgotten. It was Viv & Kev that teamed up with you. Don't worry, I remember.

Fear not db, I think I can handle it. And by the way Rach, that was a wonderful and refreshingly original critque on my nickname. Having had said nickname for about twenty years you can bet I haven't heard that freshly-minted little gem before ;\)

Yeah welcome to the forum Bazza, just having a dig, enjoy your stay wave.gif

Damn, and I just rated you today! Man I miss Viv&Kev. They always had something so productive and infomative to add to the conversation. But the funniest part was...you never even knew if it was Viv... or Kev...bwahahaha, comic genius putting both their cute little names on there.

Barry is close on his way to joining the viv&kev end of the my rating spectrum...ya ponce boy. BTW what does that mean Dims? I am assuming something along the lines of "respectable older gentlemen."

just can't support that proposition...

there is so much to spend money on. i find it difficult to believe that i will ever be relaxed enough to spend big quants of dough on a holiday, when cheap hols are just as good, if not better.

me thinks those willing to spill the dollars have reached the point where u r working to pay for your holidays. i can't comprehend why people spend hundreds of dollars a night on a hotel room - a place to sleep.

what is it that makes this worthwhile?

the fact that u can kid yourself that u can do what rich people do?

the fact that u work so hard, and need to unwind so badly, that the only way possible is by spending huge amounts in reckless abandon?

or the fact that u earn so much more money than me, that it isn't really a big deal?

(excuse me...wandering) sometimes i actually wonder how wealth accumaulates. i see people with fancy cars... actually i see people with regular cars and wonder, 'where did u get the money for that?' where does money come from?

i went to see the new maglev train in nagoya last week. they are still digging the tunnel, and i watched 'em work for a bit. 10-15 guys down a big hole with some monster sealed drill, weaving their way passed gas and water lines. lots of specialised tools, really big things...and i thought - how can this possibly be worth the money it costs it build it? how can all these things have made it to this place and moment in time, in an efficient manner? what will eventually travel on this train to make this worthwhile?

along the same lines, i wonder what is it that i do, that makes me worth the money i get paid. i sure as f don't think i represent value for money. most of the time i'm not even working. i have also worked another job, where i could run up large bills, to be borne by society. part of a billion dollar industry full of inefficiencies that are apparently too difficult address.

how many people actually make something, or really feel they contribute to the world? and even if u do grow a tomato, how does that spawn the wealth that drives resources to be extracted from the ground, and all the economic flows follow?

all can not be as it seems.

i also don't believe in glass.

You have a very valid point, mikazooki, and you have explained it clearly. I'm not saying you're wrong, in fact you are very right for many people. But different people have different tastes.

So I do enjoy doing that kinda thing to "kid myself that I can do what rich people do". It's kinda like going to the movies. You get to escape from dull reality occasionally. It spices up life and makes the slaving away at work worthwhile.

I have the kind of job which allows me to earn a bit (but an obscene amount) of money and most of my hobbies and things I enjoyed during my leisure were quite inexpensive. So while I did get pleasure from seeing my bank balance expand, it's nothing like the pleasure I get going to Japan and staying at 5-star hotels and splashing around a bit, especially during snow season.

Not to say that is the ONLY way I can enjoy myself, but it certain IS enjoyable.

However, I do admit, I had just as much fun (and probably more than usual) last Easter, just bumming around with the zeroman.

I guess what I'm trying to say is simply that eating out can be fun whehter it's at fancy expensive restaurants or at a fast-food street stall. I just think variety is fun and I'd hate to limit myself to either one or the other.

Of course I also have no objections to anyone who wants to stick to one type and avoid the other. As I said, everyone has there own tastes.

I've stayed in some super luxury hotels in Bali, but next time I go, it'll be somewhere cheap but clean.

I don't enjoy being in the bubble that 'luxury' creates. It usually cuts you off from more enjoyable experiences.
