@tokyo 14
I have thought this a few times before and forgot to post. You know those small stretches of road at the base of Shiga Kogen (Nakano?) and the one between Nagano and Hakuba where you have to pay toll.... why are those small sections toll roads? TheOrange 0
The one at Nakano is avoidable - just take the old main road... only takes about 5-10 minutes longer. Don't know why those stretches in particular cost.
skidaisuki 0
The tolls simply help to pay back for the massive construction costs. Tokenism, really
tsondaboy 0
Once you try the old 406 national root connecting Hakuba and Nagano you will be pretty happy with the toll road. The 200 yen is nothing comparing to the hassle you avoid.
muikabochi 208
Why those stretches toll though? New roads are going up all the time, not all toll though. Will the tolls stop when they have covered costs, I wonder
scouser 4
Is that 406 picturesque and a nice ride in the summer?
tsondaboy 0
Yes, I did it 2 weeks ago. It passes through many small villages and sightseeing spots. I also know 1-2 nice places to pick up food on the way. But, it is full of turns and very narrow road and I definitely avoid it during the winter. It also takes 30 min more than taking the Olympic road to hakuba.
fukdane 2
Love roads like that on a clear bright sunny day. That's a good one - but not in winter of course.

cheeseman 1
Sounds like a nice road. Does it go through Togakushi? Any cheese tips on the way, tsondaboy?
BettyBoo! 0
I went up to Shiga Kogen last week. What a lovely area it is, very beautiful I really liked it. And those monkeys! I used that toll road by accident actually I didn't know until I was on it. Very short. On the way back we used the town road which wasn't painful! Hoping to go to Shiga Kogen again before the end of this year when it is white!

Snow-Woman 0
Sounds good. I am a big ramen fan. Anyway I plan to go up that area soon, maybe round Togakushi and the backroads round Myoko as well... pretty area.
