Well, perhaps it would help to think about a meat pie floater that has been sitting a table for a long time. The pie is getting inundated, but hasn't exactly sunk to the bottom yet. Less of a yes/no sort of deal than "Is Sheila up tha gut?"

I wasn't really drunk, rolling around on the floor. Somewhere on the way to that, feeling rather mellowed out.

 

So maybe "quite drunk" is more acceptable?
