this one`s probly for tha surfers, but any info would be greatly appreciated.

i`m planning a bit of a surf-trip to Oshima this August, and was just seeing if anyboby`s ventured there? i`ve got some basic info. on tha joint, but apart from that not much else. (lonley planet)

I`ll be goin there with a mate, and we`re takin a car, so getting around won`t b a problem. we`re planning on camping and surfin our `nuts off. about a weeks stay should do tha trick. i`ve heard the waves are pretty good.

can`t afford to do an Indo. trip, so this will have to suffice.

cheers. wave.gif

p.s. feel free to invite yourselves.

haven`t decided yet Yamakashi, but we`ve both got almost the entire month off. will probly try to avoid Obon, although there will most likely be a `serious` festival worth checkin` out. will also try and avoid sat. & sun, as i read tha place gets overrun with `tokyoites`.

also, depending on what tha typhoons are doin, we may suddenly decide to go...`tomorrow`.

I think it must be Amami-oshima because he is talking about surfing.
I'm going to Oshima(I mean Oshima in Tokyo) by ferry this weekend for riding a bicycle around the island! We'll probably be able to swim there, too!!

slow, are the waters around Ooshima(Tokyo) clean?

i tried once swimming at zushi, near kamakura. but it was awful.

I am planing to go to shimoda when it gets a bit warmer, it looks really nice place. I hope it is not as dirty as kamakura area.

I have camped on the beach near there a few times. Water is surprisingly clean and clear and perfectly warm in summer. The beach geography is quite different to other chiba style beaches. Much nicer - it reminded me of some small rocky-sandy coves that i would surf in Australia. I very much enjoyed crawling out of my tent and walking into the water. It was such a contrast to Tokyo life and reminded me of home. Nothing in London reminds me of home. I have not been in the ocean, or any body of water, for over 12 months. It is a disgusting state for a guy like me (so my remedy is this weekend in Sicily. No surf there but plenty of rocks to dive off of and endless clear cool salty water to hold my breath under). Can't wait! F*ck you London!! I cant believe I am about to say this, but you should enjoy the natural resources that are available near you in Tokyo as you will miss them when you leave (...and move to a crap hole like London). I am now taking my pasty pathetic Pom body to the physio so I can get my desk job-no swimming shoulders to operate again without agony. I can't even carry a pizza without pain! And swimming does not include a public pool. There is nothing more revolting, particularly indoor ones.

Sorry, got carried away. Shimoda (area) is great \:\)

Powwwers: get amongst it mate! Keep a weekend night free for me soon, will be in touch.

You sound desperate man!!!! I hope you make it back to Japan really soon though, because in about one month from now, it will look more or less like London here too. \:\(

I will try to make you fill a bit better, here are some pics from Golden week that I went back home. :p

I ve actually been to Shimoda but during Christmas, so no swimming for me. The place looked really grate and even reminded me of some of the beaches back home. I definitely wanna check it this summer, although I heard that during the high season it is pack with crowds fleeing Tokyo for the weekend and the traffic jam can get as long as 60 km! eek.gif

I hope that I will pick a nice day to go

Take a train with your bike and get to Shimoda, tsonda! If you want, you can start riding from Atami and you'll enjoy exploring Shimoda better!

I remember I had this conversation here last summer but I can repeat. Water from Zushi to Chigasaki is not really clear and too many people on those beach in summer. I always go to Hayama. It's just next to the Zushi beach but water is much clearer and my frind reminded Greek beach there, too tsonda. If you go down to Izu or Miura peninsula, water is clear and beaches are much nicer. I'll make a report of Oshima when I come back.

sunrise/woywoy - get to go to Brisbane. Our school has a sister school there, it seems along with every other English speaking country in the world. Found out we have like 9 sister schools. Is that normal I wonder??

Yup, all expenses paid - I also get paid X amount for each night spent out on school trips and since its 2 weeks in Oz that will cover my winter holiday ski trip - not to mention get outta Japan during a muggy period \:D \:D

I can sympathize with DB about being in London and not being able to do things/sports you love. When I first moved from Hawaii back to the mainland I went nuts. I went from regularly surfing 3 days a week and being at the ocean in 20 minutes, to no surfing or ocean; it was now about a 4 hour drive for $hit waves. Depressing.

Cant surf where I live here very much (lack of car too) but at least get out to the beach quite a bit. Itd be nice to catch some waves again cool.gif

Beautiful pics Tsondaboy - would love to go to Greece...if thats where I remember you said youre from.

During Typhoon season when the swells are huge head down to Izu, look at at at detailed map of the coastline, ask around and you will find a point that has some all time big waves. Holds big swell and is an almost perfect set-up. It is about an hour's drive from Shimoda/Ohama beach. Seek and you will find.

We had friends that rented a house right on ohama beach, as you cross the over-the-top suspension bridge as you head to the smaller beach. It was such a party place that the local taxi company erected a sign in front saying if you need a taxi, just ring up and say gaijin-house No.3 and we will be there, all in perfect English! The house three doors up was periodically used for making porn films as it was also right on the beach facing the ocean with a sheltered 2nd storey balcony out the front. A friend of mine took and early morning stroll down the beach during a spring weekeday only to see a pretty young lass being bent over the railing with a full film and light crew in action. So somewhere in Japan there is a porno with my mate cheerly loudly in the background lol.gif clap.gif

Sorry, getting way off topic. The hamburgers at the cafe up the road from Ohama beach with the outdoor area and campfire used to be absolutely lush.

Powwers,

An ever-changing crew have rented that house year-round for the past 10 years or so. It used to be called the "American House" but about 5 years ago the aussies started to outnumber the americans and that had to change.. :p The tradition continues this summer.

Error, as long as I can keep my stormtrooper helmet on!

Anyone got any tips for places to stay in or around Izu? I am super keen to get down there a number of times this summer ... real beaches with white sand and all so close.

Except during typhoons.

I think about 100,000 yen a month for that house.
