  2. Just looked outside my apartment - the park has had a huge dump - 5/10cms over night now to find a massive hill
  3. In regards to the going to the dark side thread - this involves going the opposite way. Just a quick backstory - I haven't been skiing for an eternity and a day (well about 5 years) since I hit my first powder on the 'board and have never looked back - until I see people's pics from the off-piste action on skis. What skies do people recommend for re-starters. Would like some general all rounders, not too expensive as might not enjoy it as much . Just a quick spec - I use 29cms boots and have a wide foot - about 14cms - if that helps.
  4. have you tried odakyu tours? they do a lot from the kanto area - never tried them myself.
  5. managed to get a spot at seisenso on the 24th/25th through this site. will let you know then what it's like - just itching to get there as everywhere is crowded up then
  6. Have to say - if you go to the shops to try the stuff on - try checking on ebay or yahoo for prices as well. did this a few years ago and saved about 150 quid on the stuff I wanted just by waiting a week - a helly hansen jacket and some burton trousers. Really reccommned investing in some decent gloves - especially as a beginner. You'll fall over so many times and get so much snow that when the weather turns colder, your hands will suffer from it. For goggles, check the venting in them whilst at the shop. If possible, put them on and heavily breathe (ooh err) and sometimes this

  8. Last one from gala is at 7:04pm. And it was empty so we could stretch out our weary legs. Last one from echigo-yuzawa on weekdays is at 10:22pm. Weekends the last one from gala is a bit later at 7:57pm
  9. http://www.snowjapanforums.com/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/256195#Post256195 discussion here about both of those places
  10. Just up in gala today - some friends (skiers) wanted to learn how to to snowboard but baulked at gala's prices so ended up getting the short straw and teaching them in the morning. Afternoonm just rode switch down edelweiss and melody runs
  11. Ok - sorry for the elay in updating - if anyone is intereseted - but for the last couple of weeks have been riding switch - and my god - I have forgotten how much it hurts to fall over on 'ice' sometimes! At times, it drove me back to riding regular but managed to try it and now - not great, nor competant, but can ride basic switch - still a little iffy with carving and turning at speed but getting there. had to change from a 9 / -9 to a 15/ -9 as didn't quite have enough leverage but it works great.
  12. Just so turns out that the shinkansen we got today was the last one from gala yuzawa anyway! Good job we DIDN'T miss it!
  13. thats not the echineko... the point is getting a later shinkansen on the same day
  14. darn so If I do the weekday one day return I am confined to those trains?
  15. speaking from past experience - did the same thing about 8 years ago and didn't listen to the advice. To this day I still get some trouble in my right ankle - better to err on the side of caution on this one. One season out compared to many with ankle problems is an easy descision to make
  16. hey quick question if I were to miss a shinkansen (with reserved seats) on the way back from a trip - what's the deal? can I just jump on the next shinkansen but in the unreserved section? if so, do I have to pay extra?
  17. Tubby - when are your days off? If you need someone to go with...
  18. so meat is a contributing fact to global warming? damned atkin's dieters
  19. Gala is mostly busy at the weekend - bnut have been numerous times this season on weekdays - and it's always like that - sometimes a little busier but not much more. Last week got the shinkansen up - at about 7 in the morning - and walked around the carriages. Now this was the double decker shinkansen and I looked around 3 carriages and saw one person. ONE!
  20. But surely anyone who takes up, or does, a dangerous sport - be it a beginner or advanced, is putting their life at risk? Is it worth driving a car considering there are so many accidents per year? Death is part and parcel of daily life - you could get killed walking down the street, you could get killed slipping over when you come out of the shower, in a friend's case, simply being in the wrong place at the right time. These guys know what they're doing when they do this - the ones that think they are indestructible are the dangerous ones. They do it for the rush - of finding n
  21. sorry - when I read it back I wanted to delete but was too late! If it is an emergency route down due to winds - I calls dibs on on going down on it first!
  22. Are you sure that's not the southern area? I know it is closed this year.
  23. Kagura today was beautiful - all morning the snow was falling but visibility wasn't poor - it was shocking! maybe 5 metres in front of you...if less? But there were no crowds and the only problem was the time it took some of the gondolas to get to the top. Came off the slope at about 3:30 due to the stupid bus - but even then was still riding some powder 'on-piste'
