  2. The World Heli Challenge is BACK!!! never heard of it? 1995-2001, and August 2007 When I skied Hakuba (the one week I was there) I dreamt of a heli event to the likes of this... http://www.worldhelichallenge.com/whc07/default.cfm Now that harro is back in the game, who knows what the future holds? maybe, just maybe, it will encourage me to figure out the logistics here. (actually, I remember harro's nightmares and am surprised he started it up again. I guess he couldn't resist.) In 2001 he was still sleeping in his car, yet ran what the industry considers as th
  3. thanks for the pics ebc. I know someone got hurt, but I still appreciate your shots. the thread about the broken nose died some time ago. we're on page 3 (or 4) now, which means the point has been made and the arguments are brewing. (which is why I rarely read beyond page 1)
  4. yeah, I should have mentioned that our trips usually involved 5-8 miles of traverse into the peaks. (montana) but he could climb really steep pitches better than me as he could duck-walk. I'm thinking of one situation in particular where we had to climb a 20 foot wall/crux of deep snow. I ended up clicking out and climbing. he laughed at me
  5. had a friend who rode the k2 clicker set-up with the short ascent skis/skins. he could climb anything my enormous rossi XXXs could. They weren't any bulkier than snowshoes but definetely faster. I know many snoboarders hate teh clicker, but as far as BC is concerned, it's right up there with a split board in efficiency, in-my-skier-opinion. this wasn't a one time thing either, he used that set up every thursday-monday for ten weeks straight. Tent style bc. I've never seen someone happy on snowshoes. although, ignorance is bliss.
  6. kumapix, I was talking about somebody's old pit getting buried if they filled it in. Not using their pit for samples. when people disturb large areas of snow, you won't get an accurate picture of the snowpack even after the next storm cycle. the chances are slim of digging in that spot again, but I just wanted to find a reason for not filling it in i'm just biting the trolling thread, entertaining my ego. I've never had this conversation before and highly doubt I would debate with someone on the hill if they decided to bury it or not. I don't think I would've even noticed whether they
  7. Quote: Originally posted by montoya: samurai, it's not exactly in the deep wilderness. on the weekends that area probably sees +100 people up there. Can you imagine what it'd be like if everyone dug a pit and left it open? yeah, I can imagine what it would be like... if they all left their 100 pits, I would know where to look for a good sample that hasn't been disturbed and then burried, then buffed out by the wind, giving me a false sample of the snowpack. I consider you covering your pit as being discourteous to fellow riders. "somebody might fall into it." = GAY coveri
  8. I'm getting surprised there is this much debate. Perhaps I can understand the aesthetic value in a high foot-traffic area, but other than pleasing the demi-gods, I see no reason to fill it in-- at all.
  9. your snowpit is a hazard in the back country? Crickey, how big is it? Honestly, as a skier, i would prefer you leave it empty. i will dig my own, but if you bury it, then it gets buffed out by wind, I won't know where to dig to find an undisturbed batch of snow. the bc is a pretty big place, I've never given it a thought, actually.
  10. Group Thought. that's the reoccuring mistake I see occuring in the story of this thread. Nobody feeling things were right, but nobody speaking away from the group. the world's elite make mistakes that cost them their lives. Limiting Group Thought will limit the mistakes that spiralled out of control here. It's not said enough; It takes more balls to step up and walk away from a dangerous situation than it does to follow a group into one.

What brand silks do you use? I'll look out for them. nothing special, just sierratradingpost.com for reasonable silk and merino. Nothing brand name, but reasonable and good quality. silk base, merino base, wicking poly mid. no odor, and loving the set up.
  12. Margarine reduces cholesterol? it's good for you? I read somewhere it actually increases your chances of getting heart disease by like 300 % and that all the health benefits originally marketed turned out to be false. (I really wish I still had that email in my inbox.) Interesting that if you put it in your closet for a month and open the lid, nothing will happen. Nothing will eat it. No bugs, no mold, nothing. I remember reading that margarine is one molecule away from plastic. Actually, I read it wasn't originally created as a food product, but I can't remember what exactly that origin
  13. did you miss the bit where he was dancing??? I'll say it again, he was dancing.
  14. no journey man. I belive you that you don't dry off. that is why natural fibers are nice, they maintain warmth when damp. silk and merino all the way. I just discovered the combo of layers this winter and will never go back to polys. they're just not as comfortable. Actually, I'm so impressed with my new silk base/merino mid that I've already decided to stock up again. I just see no reason for poly after riding with silk and wool--- other than camping.

  16. great thread... I will take my camera tomorrow. I wish I had one last week when I saw a dude (maybe a dude) in crazy pink dancing on his snowblades, going off, skiing backwards like a fricking figure skater. He was so sincere too.... complexing.
  17. I eat a stick of butter in the morning before those super cold days, just drop it right in your coffee. the calories help. that or mayo- I just spoon it right out of the jar, goes down quick.
  18. I think Technica (?) is also experimenting wtih a flexible-sole alpine boot. I also believe that Rossi's Bandit boot boasts a flexible sole. So they are definetely changing.
  19. last year there was a huge avi at Mammoth, in bounds, late in the day, after skiers had lapped it up all day. dumb guides or not, snow is freaky.
  20. glad you wondered in Daver... we owe Tsondaboy a beer to say the least.

Bring on the fire!!! for all her frugalness she sure seems to know how to spend money! isn't that like the most expensive plane ticket you can buy? i think she spends money just as freely as you do man, only she is much better at justifying it. Actually, the most expensive plane ticket you can buy (I believe) is the one from Jackson Hole to Mt Vinson; the highest peak on the continent o
