The truth is, it sometimes doesn't equate with real situations on a slope, unless you're telepathic. Fair enough people in front of you have 'right of way', but you don't reallly know what they're going to do. For example I might adjust direction two or three times to keep out of the 'too close to another person range' of another rider, only to have them do something completely unexpected again. Both collisions happened on crowded runs, which I don't usually rid

Almost finished 'The Years of Rice and Salt', by Kim Stanley Robinson. Excellent read. Quote: The Years of Rice and Salt (2002) is an alternate history novel written by science fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson, a thought experiment about a world in which neither Christianity nor the European cultures based on it achieve lasting impact on world history. It was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2003. http://www.amazon.com/Years-Rice-Salt-Stanley-Robinson/dp/0553109200 -
OK, what's the generally accepted philosophy on collisions with other riders? The reason I say this is because I used to always crash or slide out to avoid a crash, and sometimes got hurt in the process, and rarely recieved any apologies for my trouble. So, collisions are inevitable, that much we can agree on. This is my 26th day out this season and today I had a hard crash into a female novice skier that literally sent her flying, and this is my 2nd so far. Although I'm not injured physically, I feel guilty as hell, and it kind of bummed out my day. I don't really feel it was my fault,

Stop signs arent in English. I know it sounds obvious, but I drove through them for years without knowing what they were. Definitely take a 4WD with snow tyres. And even then expect some challenges. I saw a little mishap today up on the way to Hida Takayama, and these guys were really struggling, car sliding all over the place and wheels just spinning. I passed around them and not one minute later a car that was coming in the opposite direction ie down hit the brakes a bit hard and locked up but slide right out of control. Save the adrenalin for the destination.

Yeah, thats the one. Very cool shop, but its only the 500 yen vids I can afford from that place. Anyway, I decided that I am going to head up that road to Nori from Hirayu on the weekend if the weather is good. Park at the gate and walk. How many hours am I up for? 1? 2? 3? Otherwise Ill sit around the house and get drunk all weekend.

Well, did a recon trip today, and went up to the first gondola stop. The snow is still up very high (further than I really want to go) So, skiing under the gondola and old runs is pretty much ruled eh? hmm. Very clear weather though. On the way back had a very nice view of the backside of Nori. Its a shame that there is no open road to Tatamidaira (i think thats it) this time of year. I dont mean the bus route from Honoki, I mean the (now)closed gate left turn before the Hirayu tunnel. There must be a way to get there, because when I went there the first time on the bus, there were pri

Quote: TTT the Godola drops you off about 30 minutes below a ridge. From the ridge you could hike into Kamikochi I'd just stick to resort dude So the gondola actually lets you on with ski gear? I dunno, its just too attractive sounding to not at least go and have a peep and look around. And the weather is freaking perfect, not a cloud in the sky......and the alps are covered in snow. Got a call from a mate at Washi telling me that it was ok there.......hmmmm. BTW the free onsen at Shin Hodaka is closed, but there is another one down the road at Toshio.

That mountain is Kasagatake. Climbed it once. Anyway, I have read the signs at the ropeway station sating not to ski. Lie a bit? To whom do you have to lie to? Is the access point for the hike near the ropeway building? I know that this valley has claimed a lot of lives due to avalanche and over zealous hikers getting hyperthermia etc. But, it is still way early season and there is the possibility that a weekend excursion here could beat the shit out of going back to Takasu for fake snow, crowds and 1,000 yen parking. 700 meters vert in two hours? Is this the hike that leads over to
