Just got back from Hakuba for the weekend. First time there and had a good time. I will agree with FT that there is alot of steep stuff to be found espically in the tress. Just wish I knew where some of the stuff emptyied out at. Enjoyed Goryu a bit more then 47. There seemed to be way to many people at 47 this weekend. I think the one thing about Niseko that i like is it seems to have consistantly light flufly powder. I have seen a lot of places with steeps(veriber, cham or LaGrave). But Niseko always seems to have light powder more so than Colorado. Any way had fun while I was -
Torino or Turin?
quattro replied to akibun's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
I know a lot of places closer to the Austrian border have both a German name and an Italian name. Has to do with Austria owning parts of Italy before WW1. However I think Turin is a bit to far west. -
First time crosscountry skiing.
quattro replied to gamera's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
well cross country will take care of that. If you feel a little unnerved about being on skinny skis. Look at some backcountry cross country skis. there a bit wider and the bindings are a bit heavy duty. You can also go with an older style 3 pin or a cable binding. these type of bindings wil also require slightly diffrent boots. -

Gamera a snowplow turn is just like the turn you would use when learning to downhill on alpine skis. Place your skis in a wedge and apply pressure to the inside edge of the direction you want to turn. If you want to slow down place equal pressure on both inside edges. As for telemarking is actualy easier on the knees then alpine skis Do not try thhis till you start felling more comfortable on your skis -

Glad to here you had a good time cross country can be fun. snowplowing will work. once you start to get good at going down you can always try to do a telemark turn. -

If worse comes to worse try mail order and have it sent from the states. Sometimes even after shipping its cheaper. Had a BD tent sent over for less then it would of cost me here. -

Some Jackets have a built in RECCO. The weight is minimal. You should always wear your tranciever into the back country. RECCO is only an added value thing and you should not depend only on it. -

What type of sick stuff would you need something that fat for? I have a older pair of Jaks whic are about 90 under foot and that seems plenty wide. -
