Some hit me hard, some don't do anything to me. The spinal wasn't guaranteed by any means - I was just one of the unlucky few who it doesn't work on. For some reason, I can't wear windup watches either. Something about my blood. Ehh, no biggy.

It's on my bookshelf right now! Funny how there is a 'second edition revised.' What, it turns out you need to poo 100 feet from a stream instead of 75? Most climbers are pretty environmentally conscious these days. I have all faith that this problem will be remedied. I met a few Japanese climbers/bc skiers at Hachimantai (I think they are kind of famous in Japan) and they were all over the enviro mountai

No stiches even, just sticky-sutures that will fall off when its healed. And i'm trying to learn some new tricks on my cruthes (like going to the bathroom, its DAMN hard with a knee splint on!) You got a spinal? Were you conscious for the procedure? My first surgery, I got a spinal because I wanted to watch what they were doing on the TV screen. Ummm, got the spinal, my legs felt numb, and then they started cutting. I c

During the work week, it makes things go faster - seriously. Then, I go home, put on my headlamp and go x-cntry ski or, if the snow is doing well, go for a snowmobile ride. The 24 hours of light bugs me more to tell you the truth. It makes you feel like you should always be out there doing something. It's run me ragged, even in my post-surgery state. The warmth, the sun, the clear skis - they are welcome d

That is backcountry time. When you can find smidgets of leftovers in the mountains and ski them, you've got it down. Great pics man!
  6. One of my good friends from high school taught me the ways of the mountains. He even recommended a book called "How to Shit in the Woods." We lived together in college for a brief while. Anyway, he had just gotten done cooking 4 lbs of refried beans, and then proceded to share with us how he planned to crap on Denali. He had been guiding on Rainier for 2 seasons, and was good enough to be promoted to a Denali guide, I guess, for these reasons. The 'blue bag'. All climbers should know what this is. John, at 6'6" (the center on our high school basketball team), demonstrated exactly
  7. Great pics my man, absolutely great! I'm salavating and hoping I can do something similar this coming winter in AK. That is just some sick sh*t! Good on you Toque!

My HS football team was Texas-esque, however. 4 trips to the state championship game in 5 years while I was in junior high and high school. After I graduated, my HS won two years in a row and lost once. Crazy football tradition where I grew up. Texass - hell no! (thank you lord.....)
  9. The director of this movie, Peter Berg, played none other than Dexter Ruteki in the greatest ski movie ever made - "Aspen Extreme" I did not know he directed this (or any other movie) until I watched FNL again tonight. FNL is probably the best book to movie adaptation I've seen. For those of you that don't know, it's a true story. Okay, so the final championship game is over-dramatized, but it still stays very true to the book and the players stories. I know most of the world dismisses American football. I hope this movie can change some perceptions on the sport. It's ver
  10. I took this on Dec 18 last year at about 3pm. This is the view out the window while I'm on the computer. Not bad.... Compare that pic with these I took last night at 1am. We've had 24 hours of light for over a month now. Only another month and a half of this to go and then maybe I can return to my regular sleep schedule!
  11. This is a pic I took from the highway just north of my house. The biggest peaks are around 14,000 feet. This is one of the bigger portions of the AK range. If you were to follow the mountains going right, you'd hit Denali in about 250 miles. This is a HUGE mountain range. (I feel I've posted this before, but oh well) These were taken a couple of hours ago. I very carefully road my ATV up river a 1/4 mile to a big gravel bar I like to frequent. An absolutely gorgeous day. 85 degrees, light breeze and sunny. It felt so good to sit in a chair and dangle my feet in the river.
  12. Here you are HTNT. I can't remember if I've shared some of these before or not. Thought I'd stick them up anyway. This is the terminus of the Black Rapids Glacier (all the rocky morainal material in the middle of the pic) in the Alaska Range south of me. This was taken about 2 months ago I believe This is probably one of the coolest things I've ever seen. This is the Salcha River directly in front of my place. Most of the ice had broken out of the river on the lower portions (such as here). I had no idea what was coming next. The above was taken around 6pm. At 9pm
  13. lol. okay, not so lol. I've been. Ummm, great for your personal education I guess. They don't sell beer there though. bummer.
  14. All I know is Ocean spells tire (as in a car tire) tyre. That's messed up Phonetically - tie er? Sounds kinky! That 'y' has always been a bugger in the English language In Alaska, you just pronounce the first and last letter. 'Ah, ya, saw da crk dn da. (saw the creek down there). Maybe that's Cajun - who knows - I can't understand these hicks All these languages! I'm trying to learn Spanish right now. I'm sick of getting screwed on my burrito orders!
  15. Copenhagen is a fun city! Ummmm, I guess, out of all of Europe (which happens to be quite large), I'd say, MUNCHEN! I love that city. Best time of my life there! Should have decent weather this time of year. Lot's of cool stuff to do within a 2 hour train ride too. Or Amsterdam. I don't want to talk too much about my experience there though
  16. Oyuki - I bet we were on the mountain on some of the same days. I was there from the 17th thru the 24th of March(I think - got some good herb there, so details are sketchy now ). I was told it was the first real dump of the season - and it was pretty much near the end of the season. My first 'snow riding' ever was down a local motocross hill in my hometown on a skateboard that I took the trucks off of. Waxed the crap out of the base with a candle and went for it. Didn't even know about snowboarding at the time. It was a 1st generation Tony Hawk board to be exact I still have t

Excellent weather, brilliant snow (30cm the night before), good friends.... and to top it off met my current g/f. Can't get much better than that! That's awesome! When you can find a significant other who shares your interests (especially snow interests!), that is special! Your topic confused me. My birthday is 04/05 (april 5) lol Best day I had this season was on Blackcomb Mt in Canaduh. It had been a horrendous season in the Coast M
  18. I forgot to get any type of leg wrap for getting my leg wet. I don't even have Saran wrap in the house right now. Some of those wipes would have been nice! I'll pick some up when I can finally drive. The stitches don't come out until the 21st, so I'm going to need something between now and then. (sorry to hijack the thread)
  19. LOL - I wish! I actually took a half shower today. I had to. I couldn't stand my own smell! Kinda hard when you have to balance on one leg while sticking the other out the shower curtain so it doesn't get wet. It felt gooood though
  20. Oyuki - did you have the surgery yet? Thought it was on the 22nd. Good luck with everything! I'm sure it will go just fine. I had my first knee surgery (meniscus) the day after I defended my masters thesis. I moved to Hawaii 2 weeks later. I wasn't in the best state for travelling, but I got around okay. I would hate to have to walk through Narita with a bum knee though! You should be fine - plenty of recovery time before you move. See if you can't get a bulkhead or emergency exit seat for your flights. Seriously - explain your situation to the airline and they may be ab
  21. anti-perspirant exists in Japan? I wouldn't have thought that after riding the subways in Tokyo! When I was in High School, I had a couple of German exchange students stay with me. They just put cologne under their arms. I never got up the courage to tell them it didn't work. Is this common in Europe or is it just a German thing? Who am I to complain though - I haven't showered since my surgery (6 days now)

According to friends who were in Nagano before studs were banned, the air in winter was thick with fragged asphalt and the snow by the sides of the road was pitch black. I kind of figured that but wasn't certain. Their 'studless snow tire' has been a huge hit here in the last two years. I was too cheap to buy any kind of snow tire in Japan even though I was making bank. People drove so slow and the

He grabs the snowchains and throws them deep into the valley and tells my friend "You're a mountain man, mountain men don't need chains". Guess I am not a mountain man. French people are weird Notice how few you see in Japan? Maybe they're smart.....who knows It totally de
  25. I can finally see the pics (super slow connection for me). Japan never ceases to amaze me. I just don't see how that dude is considered pretty or handsome or whatever. He just looks so.......soft and un-gendered. How that is sexy is beyond me. Again, Japan fashion sense is baffling.
