  1. CNY + Japanese Uni students done w/ their exams = massive crowds. Happo will look like an ant mound as usual if that is any indication.
  2. Sucks for them, RIP. SJA, it's true that Japan is behind in terms of Av control. In this case it is a bit different as it is pure backcountry. Even if they were up to speed on Av control, it is actually difficult to bomb every mountain in Japan that may be hiked by powder hounds, and you usually bomb after the storm and not in the middle of a massive accumulation. It is also true that hiking Yari when a massive storm is on the way is not the best idea to say the least. I guess a lot post-mortem analysis will take place on that one. 70 peeps !... There must have been some experienced pe
  3. I have not tried it in deep powder, but in any case of immersion in the snow, it would help assuming you managed to get the tube in your mouth in time.
  4. SG, nice attempt. Do you have a pic of what your rigged set-up looks like? I still want to rig my kit. Having your feet stuck to a board in a slide is bad news. kokodoko, an avalung is like a simple tube connected to a sort of bladder. The theory is that you breathe through the tube (air is ectracted from the snowpack around you since it is 80% air roughly)and the CO2 gets out via the bladder behind you (or on the side) so that you do not contaminate the air in front of you with CO2. It also helps not getting your throat clogged with ice/snow in the initial stage of the slide if you get t
  5. If the odds of finding him alive are small and the conditions are difficult then it is a tough call as to whether you want to send in the rescuers at night in a storm and endanger them as well. Probably not the call the family would have wanted to hear obviously. Do we have any more news from the victim? Did he pull through in the end?
  6. I use the english one produced by Nissan. I love it in unknown areas even if I know it may take me via the long route, at least I know I will get there. For areas I know, I also noticed it can take you funny ways. I also like the traffic Jam warnings as it permits to slow down before you get to the spot.
  7. Heading for Niigata for the long holidays, easier on the family from Tokyo and cheaper since we have a flat there. I may head-up for Hakuba later this season to tour with a friend who lives there. Have not yet decided on dates. looking fwd to it though.
  8. Interesting Soub. Let's hope that translates into good conditions for all.
  9. It seems there is 100cm or so on the way for hakuba after the warm air and rain + some nasty winds. It gonna be a wild ride.
  10. For those interested, found this on the net. http://72.14.205.104/search?q=cache:65v1...clnk&cd=7&gl=us Interesting in light of upcoming warm front that is to be followed by cooler temps & snow.
  11. great bag and cheap, 850+ on the down is as high as you will see. It is actually a summer bag though. Still looks nice and light.
  12. I am a bit spoiled. Home is using fiberoptics. Speed is nice when surfing SJ!
  13. I just found it, it was there: http://www.snowjapanforums.com/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/85975/fpart/1 Thanks a lot!

  15. Hi SJ, Toque had some very nice trip reports from O/S. I had actually put a lot of time in making one from France as well which I cannot find anymore (I'll look again). Not sure if this has been addressed before, have you guys ever thought about putting together an O/S snow trip reports? Are you afraid it would get too cluttered? I did notice these o/s reports/pics were ranking pretty high usually in Google and the likes, (not saying attracting hits just for the sake of it should be a finality in itself) so was wondering whether it would make sense.
  16. Very nice lens, very nice pics CB. Silly question, do people actually use that roten as well sometimes?
  17. I have only seen this type in Japan anywhere I have seen monkeys. Never seen any other types in Japan. CB u got pics of the others?
  18. That was actually very close to Kandatsu. They were enjoying the few rays of sun they could get.
  19. Tested it out the stove over the w/e for lack of doing anything better. I was surprised at the amount of soot the stove generates when you pre-heat it. I guess that comes with the territory when using fuel versus gas but was quite surprised at how filthy the underbelly of the stove became. Also, a couple of times, after pre-heating I missed the right timing to keep the stove going. Even after waiting 5 mins to cool down it would not start again. I had to take out the fuel line, shake it, re-connect and then re-pump and re-start... When I finally got it going, I could not see the flame during d
  20. Arai when it was opened used some kind of compressed air canon I believe.
  21. Thanks guys! Merry Christmas to you guys as well! I'll actually be working tomorrow... I guess you guys have to look after the site 24/7 as well... I couple bottles of champ should help. Take it easy.
