hey snow friends just back from kagura! still lots and lots of snow at the top. early morning ( ie 7 am!! ) was really good, the snow was nice and fast. lots more skiiers than boarders resulting in building size moguls - what is it with skiiers and moguls?? however, was a wicked end to a brilliant season.

i have a j license and an international license. i checked into it an it seems that the law banning foreigners from using international licenses is invalid. the japanese govt signed up to the 1949 geneva convention on motoring and have yet to withdraw from it. that means a citizen from any country that has signed up to the 1949 agreement can use an international driving permit ( it is a permit really, not a license ) to drive when abroad, regardless of how long they have been there as long as the permit is still valid. the japanese have a very bad tendency to forget that international law sup

went to nz a few years ago to do heli boarding and had a great time. you can still probable find the article that i did on it in the features archives. the resorts were to be honest pretty bad...icy, useless lifts left behind by cavemen and access roads ( not roads, more 30 degree dirt tracks ) that are shut after 5 cms of snow. i would love to go again, the arrowsmith mountains near methven were the best but my advice..stay away from the resorts!

love the fotos !! i have been hiking the back country around kagura for about 6 years now. i have been to niseko many many times but kagura is way better!! there is a very worrying trend however. this season i have seen soo many ill - equiped and under experienced riders heading into the back country and out of bounds. How do i know they are under experienced? well, watching someone side slipping down under the lifts or heading into the mountains with no probe poles, shovels etc.. is a pretty good indicator. some of these folks are going to get into real trouble sooner than latter and then t

Mt Hutt looking good
klubhead replied to nzlegend's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
no, not harsh, just honest, queenstown/wanaka have much better areas and around christchurch, the clubfields are way better and mogski i can probably ride better than you, i just don't like boarding on sheet ice mt hutt is totally over-rated, the only good boarding around there is by helicopter. save up your cash and go heliboarding, i'm planning to go again next year, straight to wanaka, no mt hutt -

i went to mt hutt last summer complete waste of time!! when it does snow, the access road is closed and when you can get up there it's sheet ice. I did the biggest slide of my life on my backside there!!! -
