Torino or Turin?
gamera replied to akibun's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
To describe Italian, Spanish names etc, katakana works pretty good, I guess. But if it's some other languages, things go different. For example Göteborg (Sweden) - I guess perhaps 'イェーテボリ' is the best fit for it, but still not completely the same - Thunderpants, help! Beijing (China ) - 'ベイジング' is the best fit but if they describe it in kanji, we are to pronounce it 'ペキン' -

Hi HarveytheRabbit. Go to snowjapan site ( not forum site )any page is okay - e.g. http://www.snowjapan.com/e/index.php Try input 'getou' at the "search sjg advanced search" window then click 'go' You will find a result. Good luck BTW I didn't know those kanjis are pronounced as 'getou'.... -

Sounds fun except that grizzly part! Quote: - just did dome research and direct flights are only from Moscow, Seattle and Anchorage. Oh well, I will post anyway.... Transportation available from Seattle and Ancorage? Very interesting in stead of from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk or wherever close by. -
Yeah, we seem to eat a lot strange things. Maybe just natural for Japanese but looks really odd for foreigners. The other day I was asked how whale tastes by my guests and I told it depends on how you cook and which part of whale. I don't think whale meat are still available though. At least not available here in Hakuba - different food culture from Osaka. The guest put kinda strange eyes on me I guess perhaps because he imagined we bit a whale in the sea - We are not primitive people!

Ah, bobby I spoke generally. I don't have any problems with my e-mailer at the moment. Sorry if I didn't explain it good. The last time I got this "turn off" advice thing was for my mail distrubutor software for newsletter.

When something does not go correct on my computers I often inquire the software makers by e-mail or whatever. Then they often advice me to turn the virus protection software (Norton, Virus-basters,Mcafee etc )off. Sometimes it works but I can't see what a virus protection software is for, then? I mean if your e-mailer does not receive e-mails correct then if they advice you to turn it off? Very dangerous!?!?!? Not the case what I recently inquired though.

Things that can make you cry almost instantly
gamera replied to 97's topic in General off-topic discussions
Thunderpants, cut an onion into 2 vertically then wash them. Then onions don't make you cry. I think I might have become immune from onions, I seldom cry even when I need to cut a lot without washing there. -

Yep, I don't like to see the invoice for toyu in winter. It's $$$$$$$!!! And you like or not, it's dropped off from my bank account lol..... -
Hi sakebomb, I am okay, still alive! We just have not caught each other in a same topic, I guess. BTW, I think you mean Matsuma-E shiokara? The name for the local region of your area, correct?

I agree with you, HoTRoD. Very strong salty taste, indeed. And sticky and stinking, too. I think if I try it again, maybe it's a good idea to have some with "Daikon oroshi" ?

gamera replied to gbanger's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
gbanger The closest ski slope to me has this page below.- for this season though. http://www.hakubagoryu.com/ski/info/bosyu/ If you were interested, maybe not bad for you to contact them now for next season? Not so many ski slope web sites have this kind of stuff, they just seem to have "inquiry" or "contact us" something like that for everything. -

This is the trick why even a newbie cross country skier can never go backward! Uneven stuff all the way from top to end. -

When I tried to take a movie with my digicam on a SD memory card (512mb), it never stayed that long. My cam said "no more memory!" after a couple of minutes when i started taking a movie with it. Maybe because of it's just a digicam, not a video camera? -

Which language - and who chooses?

Do you try to picture some or...?Both of you need to learn the other's language if you work together, I guess. And I think you can say " Nihongo de onegai shimasu" (of course you need to understand what they say though -
