Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Thursday 19th March 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We did have some southerly wind yesterday and we start this morning with rain. Heavy at times. None of that is friendly to our snow, of course. Can't see any sign of snow on the roof of the quad lift building at GALA Yuzawa, perhaps it might be managing to snow higher at Kagura (just a guess). So it's not a very nice morning. (In fact, it's quite horrid! Rain is expected for much of the day, with the heaviest due early on. Tomorrow should be clearer and indeed over the weekend too. By the way, for those of you who are affected by hayfever might want to consider face coverings even if it warms up. Not so much today with the rain, perhaps, but with clearer and warmer weather. I had a bit of a rough time with it yesterday (...after a few hours enjoying the snow). --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 190cm Notes: Special night skiing is planned for 21st, 28th March and 4th April The downhill course is currently opening late in the day to preserve snow in lower areas The planned closing date is Wednesday 6th May ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 140cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open Floodlit night skiing on Fridays and Saturdays until 28th March (until 8:00pm) The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 110cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th March (until 7:00pm on weekdays and Sundays, until 8:00pm on Saturdays and nights before holidays) The planned closing date is Sunday 29th March ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 130cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 22nd March (until 9:00pm) The Atema and Osawa base car parks (and associated runs) are scheduled to be open on weekends only The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 220cm Notes: The planned closing date is Sunday 17th May (Kagura via Mitsumata) ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 150cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 28th March (until 2:00am the next morning) The planned closing date is Sunday 19th April ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 215cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Saturdays and Sundays until 14th March (until 8:00pm on Saturdays and 7:00pm on Sundays) The planned closing date is Sunday 29th March ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 270cm Base: 140cm Notes: The planned closing date is Sunday 29th March ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 170cm Base: 100cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 21st March (until 8:30pm) The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 130cm Notes: The planned closing date is Tuesday 31st March ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 170cm Base: 80cm Notes: The downhill course is currently closed The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 130cm Notes: The planned closing date is Sunday 29th March ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 100cm Notes: The planned closing date is Tuesday 31st March Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Thursday 19th March 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 917cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 52 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 68cm (on 25th January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 595cm reported on 23 days February 2026 snowfall 132cm reported on 13 days March 2026 snowfall 34cm reported on 6 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. A blanket of low cloud over the Minamiuonuma valley to the north of Yuzawa early morning. We have lots of blue sky and some cloud. It should be a fine day, perhaps getting as warm as around 10C early this afternoon. There might be some precipitation (rain in town, perhaps even a bit of snow in high areas) overnight but tomorrow is also set to be clear and sunny. There's going to be a lot of pollen flying around the next few days. For those affected by sugi cedar pollen, face masks do help. (A bit). Some lower runs at some ski areas, particularly ones near or close to town level, are showing increasing ground and are closed off. Snow cover remains very good at higher elevations. Today is a national holiday and so expect today to be busier than a normal Friday. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Saturday 21st March 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday was quite cloudy all the way through, with spells of sunshine and then clearer skies in the evening. I heard some rain early morning but thankfully that has cleared and we have quite a bit of cloud up there still, but some and perhaps increasing blue sky. Forecasts do tell us to expect clear skies today, and tomorrow too. It should be a fine day weather-wise. I'm not hearing of any fresh snow at ski areas and can't sign of any on available webcams. Also not hearing about any possible early closings, either, but there is always a chance that there might be some sudden announcements over the coming days. For now, we can presume that ski areas will remain at least part open until their planned closing dates. General recap: Some lower runs at some ski areas, particularly ones near or close to town level, are showing increasing ground and are closed off. Snow cover remains very good at higher elevations. The total observed snowfall (at base) this season stands at 917cm. That will surely be the final number for the season. It's a really curious number, as it hasn't felt like we have had that much. Anyway, I'll post various thoughts on that in the last report of the season. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It's a beautiful morning - clear, blue skies and sunshine; and the sun should be warming us up today. Temps might rise to around 14C in town this afternoon. Let's spring skiing! Today is the last day of the season for the 'Yuzawa Snow Link' connection between Yuzawa Kogen, GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama. That means the joint ticket won't be available, but it also means that the Ropeway connection between Yuzawa Kogen and Gala will be closed from tomorrow, and presumably the Southern Area of Gala will also be closed and possibly/probably also the top lift connection between Gala and Ishiuchi. Specific information from all three of the ski areas involved is a bit... vague. We'll find out tomorrow). The report tomorrow might be later than usual. Forecasts seem to indicate possibly clear conditions early morning but possibly cloudy beyond that. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 170cm Notes: Special night skiing is planned for 28th March and 4th April The downhill course is currently opening late in the day to preserve snow in lower areas The planned closing date is Wednesday 6th May ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 120cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open Floodlit night skiing on Fridays and Saturdays until 28th March (until 8:00pm) The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 100cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th March (until 7:00pm on weekdays and Sundays, until 8:00pm on Saturdays and nights before holidays) The planned closing date is Sunday 29th March ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 110cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 22nd March (until 9:00pm) The Atema and Osawa base car parks (and associated runs) are scheduled to be open on weekends only The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 220cm Notes: The planned closing date is Sunday 17th May (Kagura via Mitsumata) ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 140cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 28th March (until 2:00am the next morning) The planned closing date is Sunday 19th April ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 175cm (upper) Notes: The planned closing date is Sunday 29th March ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 250cm Base: 100cm Notes: The planned closing date is Sunday 29th March ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 140cm Base: 70cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 21st March (until 8:30pm) The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 125cm Notes: The planned closing date is Tuesday 31st March ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 150cm Base: 70cm Notes: The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 115cm Notes: The planned closing date is Sunday 29th March ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 80cm Notes: The planned closing date is Tuesday 31st March Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Sunday 22nd March 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 917cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 52 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 68cm (on 25th January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 595cm reported on 23 days February 2026 snowfall 132cm reported on 13 days March 2026 snowfall 34cm reported on 6 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday was bright with an overcast hazy thin cloud kind of feel going on. It got as warm as 12.5C in town in the afternoon. We can probably expect similar today and indeed it feels rather warm now as of 10am. This morning started of mostly cloudy but the clouds have largely gone and we have sunny blue skies now. Cloud is expected later on, though, along with some rain, but we should be back to fine and sunny by tomorrow. Less than a week left for a bunch of ski areas in the region. Ski areas around town are now largely in 'part open' status as the snow retreats, but it is impressive that there haven't been a rush of early closings. They have done well to last this long. Snow cover higher up still remains good, and there's some pretty decent (spring) snow conditions too --- especially in the mornings. The lift connections between Yuzawa Kogen and Gala Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama are indeed all now closed for the season, though those ski areas all still remain open. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I'm pretty sure we were - are? - expecting sun this morning, but it has been a very cloudy (gassy) morning so far. It feels like it might be getting lighter, so perhaps we will get our clearer skies sometimes soon. This weekend is the last of the season for a bunch of ski areas in the area - they are going to just about manage to make it! Ground is becoming predominant in most lower areas now with a noticeable change this week. Snow cover in higher elevations still remains good. Weather should generally be fine over the weekend. (However, see: this morning for when forecasts get it wrong). Update Tomorrow is going to be windy by the looks and we can expect lift disruption - at the time of my update, both GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama have said that they will not be opening tomorrow. Others might be affected. With rain too, it's not going to be nice out there anyway! ------ Good morning from Yuzawa. It's a bright and sunny and very warm morning. The temperature shown by the side of Route 17 about 15 minutes ago was 18C. It's due to warm up to over 20C today for the first time this year. Rain is expected tomorrow. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Tuesday 31st March 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Almost 20C in town yesterday. OK, so after the spell of clearer weather, today we are in for a change. We expect rain and also some strong winds from around lunchtime. It doesn't feel windy early on this morning but it might get very windy out there soon. The forecast was so clear that GALA Yuzawa, Ishiuchi Maruyama and Yuzawa Kogen all announced that they would not be opening today. Kagura will also be closed. Southerly winds, too... famously the kind that is least friendly to snow. No info from Kandatsu or Joetsu Kokusai. So limited choices this morning and I'm not sure how appealing any of them would be. (For me, anyway). Today is the last day of the season for these ski areas: - Ipponsugi - Naspa Ski Garden - Yuzawa Park From tomorrow, the following ski areas plan to remain open: - GALA Yuzawa - Joetsu Kokusai - Kandatsu Snow Resort - Kagura - Naeba - Yuzawa Kogen Garden snow update breaking news: there is still a small patch of snow, but it will 100% be gone sometime today! - Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 1st April 2026
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Wednesday 1st April 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We even got some spells of sun yesterday and while it was windy and rainy at times, perhaps not quite as much as forecasts told us to expect. Today weather should be improved - less windy - but still grey and cloudy and rainy at times. Clearer skies are currently due on Friday. The ski areas that closed for the season over the last few days did really well to be able to remain open as long as they did. (Even if some were really hanging on by the smallest of threads!) That was all thanks to the relatively low temps for much of March. Joetsu Kokusai ski area, north of Yuzawa in Minamiuonuma, decided that it couldn't continue any longer and is now closed for the season. The ski areas that were closed yesterday due to the horrid weather all (seem to be) back open this morning. The next big question, for a nerdy type like me anyway, is... will Kandatsu, Gala and Kagura be able to open as long as they originally planned. As part of some ongoing work - new version of SnowJapan coming later this year (more on that next month) - I've been looking at snow depth data these last few days. Official snow depth at Kandatsu Snow Resort as of 31st March: 2026: 100cm 2025: 280cm Official snow depth at GALA Yuzawa as of 31st March: 2026: 140cm 2025: 320cm Official snow depth at Kagura as of 31st March: 2026: 300cm 2025: 450cm Official snow depth data is certainly not perfect, but it acts as a guide and the annual data is comparable for each ski area. Clearly, we have much less snow than we had at this point last year. Going back further, it's not quite the lowest ever, but on the low side. The remaining ski areas are going to struggle to remain open until their original planned dates. In particular, Gala hanging on until Golden Week (late April) currently feels unlikely. Anyway, I will keep you posted in these reports! (The last of the snow in my garden disappeared by 1pm yesterday. A commemorative ceremony was held). --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 140cm Notes: Part open (Central Area and the main part of the Northern Area) The planned closing date is Wednesday 6th May ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 80cm Notes: Part open The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 220cm Notes: The planned closing date is Sunday 17th May (Kagura via Mitsumata Ropeway) ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 100cm Notes: Part open The planned closing date is Sunday 19th April ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 110cm Base: 40cm Notes: Part open The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 130cm Base: 60cm Notes: Part open The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ---------------------------- All other ski areas in the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region have now closed. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. 6pm update Strong winds are forecast tomorrow (Saturday 4th April) along with the rain. As of 6pm this evening, Yuzawa Kogen, GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama have all announced that they will be closed for the day tomorrow. Over at Kagrua ski area, the Tashiro and central Kagura areas will also be closed tomorrow... and a decision regarding Mitsumata Area will be made tomorrow morning. Naeba seems to be planning on having only the Number 4 lift operating tomorrow. There doesn't seem to be any word regarding tomorrow from Kandatsu Snow Resort, but that ski areas has officially said that they might not be able to remain open until the planned closing date of 19th April. Original morning report Morning from Yuzawa. There's been a fair amount of cloud around this morning but it is largely cleared up now. The sun is out and it's a fine morning. A very welcome contrast to yesterday, which was... not nice! There might be more rain tomorrow with improved conditions more likely on Sunday. The coming weekend is the last for Naeba, Ishiuchi Maruyama and Yuzawa Kogen. Operations at all three of those are limited now as the snow dries up. From next week the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa will be closed for the season, leaving that ski area with the Central Area open.
