Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 97cm Posted on Thursday 25th December 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Happy Christmas! I so very much wish that I could be a beautiful white and fluffy day with all the ski areas open and bustling; everyone having fun. And I'm certainly not alone with that thought. Alas, I'm afraid, the weather is pretty awful. It's raining. But tomorrow is the day of that promised (or should I just use the word forecasted) snowfall. It looks like it will be a 1-day thing, with clearer weather possible on Saturday and Sunday. So the big question is whether will we get enough for all the ski areas to open up. We can only hope. Fingers crossed everyone! Oh yes, it might be very windy too; enough to potentially affect ski lift operations. From what I hear, that seems likely. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this seas 104cm Posted on Friday 26th December 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The snow started early morning and as if 9am it is falling very nicely and quickly piling up. My measurement so far is 7cm. It's not expected to still be snowing by this time tomorrow, but all being well I'll have a decent number to report tomorrow morning. If it does continue, we can expect at least some of the ski areas that are still on standby to open to actually get part open tomorrow. At this point, that is just a guess.... other than Maiko Snow Resort which has confirmed that it plans to open tomorrow morning. Lots might change between now and tomorrow morning, so the information listed below might quickly be out of date. We'll be sure things are good once things calm down. There was some strong wind early morning. Kagura is open up to Kagura Gondola and the Tashiro Area is closed. Due to wind. Ishiuchi Maruyama and Yuzawa Kogen both closed for skiing/snowboarding today (largely due to snow). Hopefully will re-open very soon. Apologies for the somewhat fragmented report this morning! What's important is that we are getting some snow. May it continue. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Part open Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 30cm Lifts scheduled to be operating: Central Area: Gondola, Barouche quad, Sociable quad, Phaeton pair, Coach pair Northern Area: Victoria quad Courses scheduled to be open: Central Area: Melody, Entertainment, Gigi, Grenoble Northern Area: Broadway ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Closed Closed today ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Part open Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 30cm Lifts scheduled to be operating: 7 lifts Courses scheduled to be open: 4 courses ----------------------- Kagura Part open Official snow depth: Top: 110cm Base: 60cm Lifts scheduled to be operating: 4 of 18 lifts Courses scheduled to be open: 5kan of 30 courses ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Part open Lifts scheduled to be operating: A Lift (pair) B Lift (quad) C Lift (quad) ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Part open Official snow depth: Top: 50cm Base: 5cm Lifts scheduled to be operating: Ropeway Number 3 pair ---------------------------- Naeba Part open Official snow depth: Top: 60cm Base: 30cm Lifts scheduled to be operating: 6 of 12 Including Dragondola connecting Naeba with the Tashiro Area of Kagura Courses scheduled to be open: 10 of 24 courses ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Part open Closed for skiing/snowboarding ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Part open Official snow depth: Top: 5cm (still!) Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 45cm Snowfall at base this seas 149cm Posted on Saturday 27th December 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. A very good morning to you from Yuzawa. I recall many times in these reports over the years when I have said how quickly things can change. This is one of those days. It's so great to be able to report another 45cm of snowfall since yesterday. In the interest of getting this report up, the detailed list of ski areas will be back... tomorrow. (We'll be preparing that during today to be ready for tomorrow). Right now early on this morning, it looks like the following ski areas plan to be open ---- part open ---- for the first time this season today: - Iwappara - Maiko Snow Resort - Muica Snow Resort - NASPA Ski Garden (from 1pm) These are aiming for opening tomorrow: - Ipponsugi Snow Park - Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Others are currently unconfirmed. A lot of busy people this morning! The snow has eased off and there's a bit of sun appearing. We still need much more snow of course but yesterday definitely felt more like what we expect. The next decent delivery seems due from Wednesday. - Yuzawa Now: Sunday 28th December 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this seas 156cm Posted on Sunday 28th December 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. We don't have what we would consider 'normal' (large) amounts of snow just yet, but there were some fine conditions to enjoy yesterday. We have received several+ cm of fresh snow overnight and it has been lingering so far this morning but we expect the skies to clear up by this afternoon. It is great to see almost every ski area in Yuzawa Town and Minamiuonuma City now open. Every ski area in the region is either part open or mostly open (Kagura). The only exception appears to be Hakkai Sanroku which does not yet seem to be open. Regarding the daily list of ski areas (below) --- we're at that stage where it's really complicated! Checking all the fine details each morning would seriously delay when the report appears and so now that ski areas are all at least part open the list has been simplified somewhat. We are keeping in information regarding major connections between ski areas (eg Yuzawa Kogen <> GALA <> Ishiuchi and the Dragondola between Kagura and Naeba). If you plan to visit any of the ski areas, check with their official information to be sure about what exactly is planned to open each morning. Forecasts are looking promising for good snowfall again Wednesday through next weekend. With a few more decent snowfalls, we can hope to ski areas getting to 'fully open' status. Easily the best status of them all! Before then, tomorrow should be fine and sunny. Update: The Yuzawa Snow Link ticket that covers Yuzawa Kogen, GALA Yuzawa and Ishiucui Maruyama ski areas is on sale from today. The Ropeway link between Yuzawa Kogen and GALA Yuzawa is definitely not yet open - a free shuttle bus is required to get between those two ski areas. There's some conflicting information out there this morning regarding the ski lift that connects GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama - the status of that lift is unclear. We'll try to have a clearer picture on that tomorrow. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 90cm Notes: The Central Area and Northern Area are both open The Southern Area (and Ropeway connection with Yuzawa Kogen) is not yet open The connection with Ishiuchi Maruyama is not yet open ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 40cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is not yet open ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 40cm ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 70cm ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 140cm Base: 90cm Notes: Both of the base areas (Mitsumata and Tashiro) are open The Dragondola connection between Tashiro Area and Naeba is scheduled to be open ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 60cm ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 125cm ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 120cm Base: 60cm ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 90cm Base: 60cm Notes: The Dragondola connection between Naeba and the Tashiro Area (Kagura) is open ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 80cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 40cm Base: 20cm Notes: The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is not yet open ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 30cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 30cm Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Sunday 28th December 2025 Total snowfall at base so far 156cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 10 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 45cm (on 27th December) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. So we are into the last few days of the year now and we have lovely weather this morning. The sun is out and we have clear blue skies. It has been cold early on with a bit of a wind higher up, but it should end up being a fine and relatively mild day. Ski areas will also very probably be very busy as many people are now on holiday from work for the New Year holidays. The lift connection between Ishiuchi Maruyama and GALA Yuzawa is now available. A special Yuzawa Snow Link ticket covers both ski area (and Yuzawa Kogen). At Kagura, the connecting course between Tashiro Kagura connecting course is also going to be available. All ski areas in Yuzawa are now at least part open and all ski area in Minamiuonuma (apart from Hakkai Sanroku) are part open. We should be getting fresh snow over the New Year and that should help build up the snow levels (which are still low). --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 90cm Notes: The Central Area and Northern Area are both fully open The connection in the Northern Area with Ishiuchi Maruyama is open The Southern Area (and Ropeway connection with Yuzawa Kogen) is not yet open ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 40cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 30cm ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 70cm ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 140cm Base: 90cm Notes: Both of the base areas (Mitsumata and Tashiro) are open The Dragondola connection between Tashiro Area and Naeba is scheduled to be open ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 50cm ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 125cm ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 120cm Base: 60cm ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 90cm Base: 60cm Notes: The Dragondola connection between Naeba and the Tashiro Area (Kagura) is open ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 70cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 40cm Base: 20cm Notes: The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is not yet open ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 30cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 25cm Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Monday 29th December 2025 Total snowfall at base so far 156cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 10 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 45cm (on 27th December) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 156cm Posted on Tuesday 30th December 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After some fine weather yesterday and fairly mild conditions after the cold start to the day, we start this morning with some ominous looking clouds... and spots of rain. (It might be trying to snow higher up). The good news is that we are still looking forward to snow tomorrow and this time perhaps it might keep snowing for several days. We'll have to see just how much. The minimal snow base is just about enabling some lower level ski areas to be part open, with patches of ground showing through in places. Ski areas at higher elevations are faring better, as you would expect. But several days of consistent and sometimes heavy snow (please) is what everyone needs right now. So while it's certainly not exciting conditions this morning, we do have something to look forward to across the next few days. Tashiro Ropeway over at Kagura Ski Area had some kind of problem yesterday and it will also be closed today. So the Tashiro Area of Kagura is unavailable today. Let's hope they can fix whatever the problem is quickly. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 90cm Notes: The Central Area and Northern Area are both fully open The connection in the Northern Area with Ishiuchi Maruyama is open The Southern Area (and Ropeway connection with Yuzawa Kogen) is not yet open ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 40cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 30cm ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 60cm ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 140cm Base: 90cm Notes: Both of the base areas (Mitsumata and Tashiro) are generally open However, there is a problem with Tashiro Ropeway and so the Tashiro Area of the resort is closed today ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 50cm ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 125cm ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 120cm Base: 60cm ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 90cm Base: 60cm Notes: The Dragondola connection between Naeba and the Tashiro Area (Kagura) is closed today; the Tashiro Area is closed due to a problem with the Tashiro Ropeway ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 60cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 40cm Base: 20cm Notes: The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is not yet open ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 30cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 25cm Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Tuesday 30th December 2025 Total snowfall at base so far 156cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 10 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 45cm (on 27th December) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The forecast got it quite wrong for a period of yesterday when the skies cleared and we got some bright blue skies for a while. It is not snowing yet this morning, but we are almost definitely - surely - getting some today and beyond. I think we can be optimistic that we'll be getting a fair bit over the coming days. Personally, I'm hoping for some really big dumpage that will allow all the ski areas to get fully open and enjoy great conditions (once the storm passes). I'm guessing quite a few of you reading this will be thinking the same. - Yuzawa Now: Thursday 1st January 2026
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 13cm Snowfall at base this seas 169cm Posted on Thursday 1st January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa and a happy new year to all readers and friends of SnowJapan. We have a layer of fresh snow on the ground this morning. Hurray! But first let me rewind a bit. We were expecting snow during the day yesterday but, once again, we ended up with something different. We got extended periods of blue sky and sunshine while it was snowing in northern regions of Niigata. That has been known to happen, but it's pretty frustrating when you are yearning for the fluffy stuff. Forecasts all told us to expect snow, but that only started to happen later on in higher elevations (with some rain lower down) and then turning properly into snow overnight. OK so this morning it is snowing. The new snowfall measurement for the morning, as of 9am, is 13cm. It's not a massive amount, but very welcome all the same and much needed out on the slopes. More of a plaster than a full recovery. Ski areas are still in 'part open' status and the snow depth numbers are all still low (very low at some). So we want much more and a good old consistent Snow Country-style storm would be perfect. Forecasts promise snow clouds to be with us and bringing us that precious snow across the next several days, so the numbers should be increasing steadily - and hopefully quickly at times. Let's have it! The top Kagura Number 5 pair lift opens from this morning. That lift is open from 9:30am through 12 noon. Quite a long way from Yuzawa, but congratulations to Budoh Ski Area up in the northern part of Niigata Prefecture. It has closed at the end of last season, with the ski lifts due to be removed, but a company came in and saved it. That ski area opens this morning under the name 'Budoh Snow Resorts' (curiously plural on official stuff). You can of course find it on SnowJapan! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. More snow to report this morning. It was snowing for most of the time yesterday and ranged from light snow to relatively short spells of heavier snow; though never really getting into the 'relentless mad snow' level (the one I love so much). Still, including a measurement yesterday evening and subsequent wiping off the measuring point, and the additional snow overnight, I can report 28cm of fresh today. Good. Very welcome. But let's keep going! Light snow has been falling early this morning but has just eased off as I write this. There are even a few signs of some brighter skies and perhaps even a bit of sun breaking through the clouds. Perhaps temporary. We'll just have to see. But forecasts still show snow with us today and tomorrow. (It's worth noting that forecasts over the last week or so have turned out to be off-target to varying degrees, so it's feels hard to know exactly what to expect at the moment). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 35cm Snowfall at base this seas 232cm Posted on Saturday 3rd January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I'm very happy to report some very good snowfall overnight. After clearing some yesterday evening, I have just cleared another 32cm of snow. Total 35cm since my last report. Excellent. The only new snowfall info I can find from ski areas is 40cm from Kagura and 20-30cm being reported by Naeba. They don't do that every day. (A common moan on these reports dating back many years is the lack of this info each morning... I so wish they would make it a habit to say how much fresh snow has fallen each morning) Anyway, it is still snowing with more due through today, so hopefully there might be another good number to report tomorrow. This snowfall is really going to help and the official snow depths are starting to catch up now. Forecasts indicate some sun tomorrow morning with more snow coming in on Monday. - Yuzawa Now: Sunday 4th January 2026
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this seas 241cm Posted on Sunday 4th January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Some more snow since my report yesterday morning along with another 5cm or so overnight, so there's another 9cm to add to this report. There's quite a lot of cloud to the north but, as of 7:45am, there's a lot of blue sky over Yuzawa. It looks like those clouds to the north might be moving over to us, but forecasts seem to indicate a generally clear morning. The groomed slopes are looking very inviting in the early morning sunshine. Back to some snow tomorrow perhaps, but also a chance of rain with some milder conditions. It would be great if we could avoid that. The recent snow has been most welcome, but we're still low on snow and most ski areas are still not able to get 100% open. Today will be the last day of the new year holidays for many people. We can usually expect places to get less busy in the afternoon as people start to make their way back home. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There was a bit of 'oh no, rain' feeling going on, but this morning the outlook is much better so we can put that to one side. This morning there was a very respectable 32cm of fresh snow on our trusty measuring point as if 8am. It is still snowing and so there will should be more to report tomorrow morning, but it might not last the day with less forecast this afternoon. We might get some sunshine tomorrow but there's more snow coming in on Thursday. Sounds good. Bring it on! Wind might be a problem today and indeed the Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed, so the Dragondola between Tashiro and Naeba is also closed. Other lifts may be affected.
