The resort is reporting 20-25cm of fresh snowfall across the mountain and I can report 21cm since yesterday (almost all of that coming since last night). Nice. The snow clouds haven't lasted much into today and right now it is cloud and some blue sky out there. Going to be a fine day by the looks. This fresh snow will really have given us a good refresh. Today is a good day to be out there. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning! Fresh snow, yippee!!! Kumanoyu are reporting 10cm. Yakebitaiyama are saying 20cm. My good friend (who I do love but sometimes has been known to.... 'elaborate'...) is saying up to 30cm. I myself have measured 16cm, so that is what goes on the report. It was really coming down nicely at times and was still snowing early on, but the clouds have been clearing and the sun is out now. Those long lasting storms are something we are still just hoping to see. Still, conditions should be very good this morning as the mountains have all had a nice new layer to play with. I'm excited to go out and sample the goods myself. Not a whole lot on the radar for the coming week, so let's make the most of it. As long as it keeps cold conditions should keep. Almost all courses and connections at Shiga Kogen are now open with just a few exceptions. When I heard the plows going by at about 4:30 this morning, I got excited; they usually don't run up the long run to Akakura Kanko unless 30cm or so falls. Time to get ready for my own snow clearing activities, I thought. But not really. A not terrible snowfall overnight, but only about 15cm (the plow people probably really need the work, too!). Kind of creamy snow; not light powder, exactly, but good solid snow. We could always use more, and once again snow is being followed by a sunny day, which is really not what we want. Days of unending, pounding snow (I know, this is getting repetitive in these reports). There is still much hope, and lots of season ahead of us. But it was colder overnight, the freezing level isn't going way up the hill, and there is the chance of more snow showers today and over the coming days. Some people reading this might have a cloudy head this morning after the festival fun last night, but those getting up early and heading up the mountain should be rewarded... The resort this morning is reporting 20-26cm of fresh snowfall on the upper areas and 10-15cm on lower areas too (since 3pm yesterday). I can add 13cm to my report as my observed number from base. Those are more like numbers that I would often be reporting from Nozawa, but in this season of less-snow-than-usual it kind of feels more exciting to be able to report it this morning. (Lesson currently being learnt - be sure to always appreciate the snow all the time. It's all precious.) The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have just been out and measured 4cm of fresh snowfall outside my place. It remains cold and light snow is currently falling in places but visibility remains fairly good for the moment. It looks like there is a chance of some heavier snow later on, though I wouldn't expect anything significant (but would be totally happy to be wrong). The chance of the next decent delivery of snow looks to be for early next week. All lifts should be operating as planned. ----- As we are now in at the middle point of January: Last year, I observed 285cm of snowfall for the whole of the month January; 305cm the season before. In January 2017, I observed 152cm. So far this year my observed number for the first half of the month is 105cm. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moutain base: -8℃, 3cm of crystal snow, calm. Moiwa800m: 337°(NNW) 6.0m/s, -9.1℃, 5cm snowfall, no snowdrifts. Hirafu1000m: 296°(WNW) 1.7m/s, -11.3℃, 5cm snowfall, wind is picking up at the peak and some snowdrifts are developing. Hanazono720m: 325°(NNW) 5.0m/s, -8.9℃. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: NNW8m/s, Kamui cape: WNW2m/s, 1018hPa, 0.5m waves. Annupuri 1000m snow depth 135cm. The atmospheric pressure gradient is flat and the weather is calm. There are no notable development of snowdrifts and cornices. The general avalanche risk is low. Peak gates will open from the morning, gate 2&3 will close at 1:30pm, gate6 at 3pm. Fresh snow is shallow but good snow. Beware of your route, thick bushes and holes are present in lower elevation. Yesterday after closure of gate 6, 2 people have forcefully crossed the gate after lashing out disrespectful words to the ski patrol. We would like to ask once more to have everyone respect the Niseko Rules. These Rules apply to every single person using the Niseko resort facilities, no matter their nationality, race, age, gender or experience level. Niseko might be a small mountain in a far-eastern country, however have spent many serious years preventing accidents for all visitors and locals. The Rules are not implemented for promoting tourism. We respect everyone’s freedom to ride, but we also do care about their safety. Beware of sudden weather changes. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 393cm Posted on Wednesday 15th January 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Light snow on and off through the day yesterday but it hasn't amounted to much new to report - I have 2cm down at base to add this morning. With the way it was falling at times, you'd think there'd be more... but there ain't. Early cloud this morning but we might get some clearer skies - indeed, there are some breaks in the cloud already. Good news about the Jumbo Number 4 at lift at Niseko Annupuri. It is open from today, along with the gate 2. Hurray! It is important to note that there isn't enough snow for all of the Champion Course at Annupuri to be open. That means that from the middle section of that course there is a detour that ventures into Niseko Village territory (the Wonderland course). Be aware that if you have an Annupuri-only lift ticket and want to ride the Wonderland lift to get back up - there'll be an extra charge. If you have an all mountain ticket, this is not an issue. It is keeping cold which is of course a good thing. Just have some warm toast in a morning and wrap up well. One day at a time. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -10℃, 5cm snowfall in 12h, calm. Moiwa 800m: 4.3m/s, 58°(ENE), -8.8℃. Hirafu 1000m: 1.5m/s, 10°(N), -10.7℃. Hanazono 720m: 0.8m/s, 338°(NNE), -8.6℃. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: SE3m/s, Kamui cape: calm, 1023hPa, 0.8m waves. Annupuri 1000m snow depth 135cm. The atmospheric pressure gradient is flat and the weather is calm on the ocean and the mountains. There are no notable development of snowdrifts and cornices even above 800m. The general avalanche risk is low today. Due to a mild radiative cooling, the temperature is slightly lower at the base than in higher elevation. Long awaited opening of gate 2 in Annupuri is scheduled for today. It’s still very shallow snowpack at lower elevation. Beware of bushes and holes into creeks. Ask the ski patrol some advice before stepping out of the gate. Do not duck boundary ropes. Although there are many tracks from yesterday, the snow remains fresh thanks to the low temperature and the slight overnight snowfall. If you can handle the bush crawling down low, you can enjoy some good turns. It’s highly recommended to carrying a beacon, a probe and a shovel, as well as wearing a helmet in the out of bounds area. Conditions are calm with no wind this morning. The day is forecast for high cloud and there is some valley mist from mid mountain upwards at the moment. All lifts are operating with good conditions on piste all over the mountain.
