Finally: a real Myoko snow day.
The weather patterns are doing what's supposed to happen: a strong northwest wind, blowing in off the Sea of Japan, loaded up with plenty of moisture. The result: just under 30cm of fresh, pretty light stuff here at base level.
The weatherman today confirmed what I was wondering about. There has been a strange front stretching from the Koreas to around the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa, sometimes moving toward Sado Island, just off the coast here. His explanation was that the large cold air masses that normally extend down from Siberia over the northern half of Japan (at least) have stayed high, while warmer air from the south has remained. The result is a persistent front over the Sea of Japan that is causing lots of weird wind patterns, and keeping that northwest wind from coming to us with snow. I know it's going to be warm again Thursday, but I hope the cold stuff comes down for us during February, and we'll have more uplifting snow reports in the near future!
