The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We have had another huge amount of new snowfall again over the last 24 hours. By 6pm yesterday there was 22cm on our measuring point and this morning there is another 42cm on there. Total of 64cm. Kagura is reporting 70cm this morning. Both Maiko and Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 50cm. There's tons of snow everywhere you look and some of the snow walls around town now over 4m tall. Wind doesn't seem to be a problem this morning but visibility is limited, so some extra care is recommended today. There will be some deep snow out there. Due to the snowfall the South Area closed at GALA Yuzawa and the Tashiro Area at Kagura are closed. Yuzawa Kogen seems to be opening, as are other ski areas... but there may well be some delays and some restrictions (lifts/courses). The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Another 15+cm during the day yesterday and another 18cm this morning on top of that. Kagura is reporting another 50cm since yesterday. The snow these last few days has been relentless. But it seems that it is coming to a stop today. As of 7:30am there are actually some blue skies appearing to the north and the remaining snowfall is just light. It feels quite bright. Check out the image from Yuzawa Kogen below, looking north. We might get some light snow continuing on and off, or maybe just increasingly clearer skies. It does look like beyond today generally clearer weather is forecast along with some milder/warmer conditions ahead of us. People are thinking that this last big snowfall will probably have been the last main event of this season. Just some regular top-ups from now would be just fine. (Locals getting very tired limbs). Haven't had time to have a good look back at how this compares to other seasons yet, but having such huge amounts of snow and these massive snow walls at the end of February feels... different. Almost 13m of snowfall has been reported so far. A bit more snowfall and it will be the most that we have ever observed and recorded in our Yuzawa Now reports since keeping the full records in 2012. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. There was a mix of strange weather going on yesterday. One minute it was snowing, the next suddenly some blue skies and sunshine. And then back to some light snow again, though not the kind of snowfall where the cms quickly pile up. By the mid afternoon roads were clear and kind of dry. This morning we start with mostly cloudy skies but there's some blue sky around. It's a cold start but it will warm up to around +2C later on. For those visiting over the weekend, the forecasts for tomorrow are a sunny start to the day and mild temperatures. It might even get to be as warm as 6-7C in town in the afternoon. On Sunday there might be some precipitation at times - and it may turn out to be rain. Hopefully not, of course. There's some milder weather due next week as well. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Well, we did get some rain yesterday though it was wet snow at higher elevations. And this morning there was even a thin layer of snow, just about allowing me to add 1cm to this report. Kagura are reporting 10cm of fresh snow. The sun is out again this morning and it is remaining quite mild. There are a few small clouds here and there, but it is almost clear. (The clouds on the Maiko image below have cleared by now). Today should see the warmth of around 7C in town. It's the last day of February already. Kind of hard to believe. But what a February it has been. Click on the Season archives tab above to see how we have now reported 1298cm of snowfall this season, with 495cm of that falling in February. The most snowfall in one report this season was 101cm on 6th February. And we reported snowfall at base on 21 days in February (and 61 days so far this season). The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We had some rain yesterday but it turned into snow. Yuzawa Kogen and Ishiuchi are both reporting 10cm of fresh this morning, Maiko is reporting 5-10cm and Kagura are reporting 20cm, so that sounds good. A cloudy start to the morning but there is some blue sky to the north in the Minamiuonuma valley and the forecast is for clearer skies. We are still expecting snow on Sunday when it will get back to being quite cold, and maybe later tomorrow too (though that might also start with rain down in town). Will be interesting to see how much snow falls on Sunday. ----- Well, that was quick! The Kagura Area of Kagura is back open this morning. Good news is good! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was warm yesterday and more than a few people mentioned some itchy eyes... yellow sand or some early hayfever? We got rained on later in the day, but happily it did turn into snow overnight. This morning Kagura and Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 10cm of fresh snowfall, while Maiko reports 5-10cm. Strong winds are forecast for today along with more snow and unfortunately that means that some ski areas are closed or part closed: GALA Yuzawa is not going to be open at all today. The Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed and the central Kagura operations are limited. Mitsumata Ropeway is open. The Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway and top area is closed. The Gondola at Maiko Snow Resort is also closed and the lifts going to the top area might not open. Things should calm down by tomorrow. The good thing out of this is we might get a decent amount of fresh snow by tomorrow morning. Let's see... The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. The snow is back, continuing on and off during yesterday and then getting heavier at times during the night. Just measured 24cm of it. Ski areas that report are reporting the numbers you can see below... Kagura says it has got 50cm since yesterday. Nice! It is still snowing now, but due to ease off sometime this morning. Currently around 0C. Less wind today and ski areas should be opening. Beyond today there's no snow shown as likely on the weekly forecast, with a much bigger chance of clearer skies, sunshine and warming temps. By the weekend we might see temps hitting double digits in town during the daytime. ----- Kagura have announced that from 19th March the top Number 5 pair lift will be open until 2pm. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday was a really bright day, but at times the skies looked more white/silver than blue. We have mostly blue sky this morning, with earlier cloud mostly dispersing. It's nice and bright and about 3C as of 8:30am. A high of at least 10C is expected early afternoon in town. Tomorrow should be sunny and similarly mild. Sunday and Monday are due to be warmer still but with more cloud around - and probably some rain from later in the day (perhaps only from evening/night). By Wednesday of next week, temperatures should be on the way down from these highs once again. We might even get some light snow later in the week, with a better chance of that happening at higher elevations. Here's what is being reported by ski areas: Kagura: 3cm Maiko Snow Resort: 1-3cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 1cm There has been just a light dusting in places around town, but right now it's either raining slightly or snowing lightly as you go higher up (or just a bit damp and cloudy). A high of about +5C is expected this afternoon in town and we're probably not going to avoid rain. BUT hopefully that will be snow by tomorrow morning. It's hard to say what is going to happen though as it will just depend on how cold it can get. We'll just have to see. Stronger winds are expected later this afternoon. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. At one point yesterday morning it was actually snowing quite heavily. That didn't last long but it did leave us with about 2cm of snow, which has mostly disappeared not too long after. There is no more fresh snow being reported overnight from any of the ski areas. This morning is bright and sunny with thin high cloud. A high of about +6C is expected today in town with similar conditions tomorrow. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday was fine, bright, sunny and warm. The snow has retreated a bit more around town areas - there's still around 1m or so of snow in the field behind my place, though. I saw lots of big diggers yesterday trying to break up the snow in some places, in an effort to get it to melt quicker. It's cloudy this morning. No rain just now, but we might get some this morning. Doesn't look like it will be much though, thankfully. It won't be as warm today and tomorrow will be colder still. In fact, some areas might get some fresh snowfall tonight. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here. Such beautiful clear blue skies yesterday! Though, warm, too (up to around 6C in town). Let me pull out one of my well-used lines... what a stunning mountain backdrop we have here in Hakuba! Amazing. Anyway, I had a blast and I'm sure lots of others did too. I am posting a very early morning report today, as I have to get myself over to Nagano station to pick up a few visiting friends from Australia. (Check out the early morning images below, from around 7am. Very cool). It’s a pretty easy one to prepare, though, as it’s probably going to be another fine (and mild after a cold start) morning, though we do have some cloud early morning.
