The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There might well have been snow falling in central Tokyo yesterday during the day, but it was bright and sunny here at the same time. Yesterday remained cold and it was very cold overnight, and the snow has started up again this morning. There's 6cm of fresh to report so far down here. Kagura are reporting 20cm, Maiko is reporting 15cm and Ishiuchi is reporting 10cm. Unfortunately forecast windy conditions mean that Tashiro is again going to be closed for the day, with the Dragondola of course closed at Naeba, and Kagura is open up to the Number 1 Romance lift. The top area of Yuzawa Kogen is also closed this morning, though the lower area remains open. The tree run area in the top part of Maiko Snow Resort plans to be open from today. (Application required). We're expecting the snow clouds to be with us through the day and tonight, to be followed by clearer skies tomorrow. It's going to be fine and sunny. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Another 5cm of snow overnight after 9cm during the day, so 14cm to add to the report. Ski areas are reporting 10-15cm. Today is the start of a three day long weekend because Monday is a national holiday in Japan. It is usually one of the really busy times of the peak season, so we can expect ski areas to be busy, especially today and tomorrow. There was some light snow falling earlier on but it has stopped now and we are expecting the clouds to clear and the sun to appear. Possibly some light snow later tomorrow but nothing major so it should be a generally calm weekend. The good news from GALA Yuzawa is that part of the South Area is now open. That area normally offers some good ungroomed course areas. For now just the main Eliza course is available. Unfortunately, there's also some covid-19 news that needs to be reported. GALA Yuzawa have announced that one member of staff in the rental area has been confirmed as having it and as such they are making various changes for the weekend. As far as we can tell all of the ski lifts and courses should be open as normal; it's more of a staffing issue for related facilities, particularly the rental facility. Sigh. Let's hope there's not going to be more of that kind of thing to have to report... The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. OK so we did get some rain yesterday, quite heavy at times too. Actually a bit surprised to notice last night how much some of the snow walls around town had got smaller over the last few days. But we can quickly look past that as the snow is back... but so is wind. First of all, 22cm of fresh snowfall measured and here's what the ski areas are reporting: Maiko: 30-50cm Kagura: 30cm Ishiuchi: 20cm Blowing winds mean that GALA Yuzawa is closed and only the Mitsumata Area of Kagura will be open today. The top areas of Maiko and Yuzawa Kogen are also closed, and part of Naeba is also affected. Other lifts at other ski areas might be affected. Lots of people will probably decide to sit this day out, as it's not very friendly out there. The snow - heavy at times - is set to continue through the day after tomorrow. Measuring 18cm of fresh snowfall since the report yesterday and this is what ski areas are reporting this morning (especially the Kagura one): Kagura: 5cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 20cm Maiko Snow Resort: 10cm Perhaps the snow clouds didn't extend down south enough for Kagura to get their snow. It does indeed look like areas to the north of Yuzawa (in Minamiuonuma and Uonuma) got more snowfall this time round, and feels like we didn't get as much as we were told to expect. [Update: 35cm measured at a point between Ishiuchi and Joetsu Kokusai to the north of Yuzawa]. It is -2C and has been only snowing lightly in the region early morning, but we are still told to expect heavy(ier) snow later on and tomorrow over Yuzawa. Let's hope they are right. Anyway, it is calmer this morning and ski areas all seem to be back open again. Quite bright as of 8am and even some small bits of blue sky to see at times, though they surely will not last. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Well, yesterday might not have been as much as we were expecting, but we sure got a lot of snow this morning. Yesterday evening 32cm of snow was moved off our measuring point. This morning there's another 36cm on there. I make that a total of 68cm, so that's the number in the report for today. It's one of those mornings when you feel the ski areas are under-reporting snowfall. Don't want to scare people, though that's hard to understand. Anyway here are the numbers out there: Kagura: 60cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 30cm Maiko Snow Resort: 20cm (since last night?) It's also quite windy out there and unfortunately a few ski areas are not opening this morning: GALA Yuzawa is closed for the day. Only the Mitsumata Area of Kagura is open. Only the lower area of Yuzawa Kogen is open (the Ropeway is closed). Only the lower areas of Naeba are open (at the moment). This storm is set to have eased off by tomorrow. We might even end up with some sun. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. More snow fell yesterday during the day and there's an additional 10+cm overnight, for a total of 22cm for todays report. We have enjoyed getting a lot of snow over the last few days, so conditions should be really good today. Great to see those snow walls by the side of the road refreshed and bumped up once again. The Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is open again from today. It looks like the Tashiro Area of Kagura is going to be closed. The reason being given seems to be a kind of vague 'staff feeling unwell', and as far as we can tell there's not re-opening date set. Will try to find out more on that today. Other than that, ski areas should be opening as normal this morning. A few events are happening today, including a '111th year of skiing in Japan' kind of event at NASPA Ski Garden (today and tomorrow). Various events are lined up involving some celebs types and character mascots appearing. There is also a bunch of firework displays due to be set off this evening in what is being called 'Yuzawa Nanairo Fuyu Hanabi' (seven colours winter festival) event. Here's the timetable for the fireworks: 6:00pm: GALA Yuzawa 6:30pm: Yuzawa Kogen 7:00pm: Iwappara 7:30pm: NASPA Ski Garden 8:00pm: Ipponsugi 8:30pm: Yuzawa Park Let's fireworks! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. The skies gradually clouded over during the day yesterday after that clear and beautiful start. This morning Kagura are reporting 10cm of new snowfall and Ishiuchi Maruyama reporting 3cm. Maiko has just reported 10cm, presumably that's up on the top area. There's a few cm in places around town and base areas this morning and it is snowing now, but doesn't feel particularly cold. Just looking now... 0C. We are due snow to continue through the day today and tomorrow, maybe with some heavy snow overnight tonight as it gets colder and should remain colder tomorrow. The Tashiro Area of Kagura remains closed with no additional news from there to report. Hopefully they will be able to re-open soon. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Well, yesterday during the day it was snowing but it didn't really amount to much at all in terms of new cm. The forecast was for heavy snow overnight and I think some of us were wondering if we might miss out on the big snow. But we haven't. Just measured 50cm of new snowfall where there was none yesterday evening. It's always great to wake up and see that! Kagura are reporting 60cm of new snow. Maiko is reporting 30-50cm, Ishiuchi Maruyama is reporting 30cm. And it is snowing quite heavily right at the moment so there is going to be more to report tomorrow. It's cold too this morning and quite windy. The Ropeway at Yuzawa Kogen is going to be closed today due to the windy conditions, though the town level area is open. Kagura and GALA are going to be open. ----- OK, so there are more details coming from Tashiro (Kagura). 13 staff had tested as positive for covid19 by Saturday, so that's the reason why they are closed at the moment. Officially they are closed 'for the time being', meaning there's no indication of when they might re-open. We will, of course, let you know when there is any news. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It snowed some more overnight, giving us another total of 24cm of fresh snow measured since yesterday morning. Kagura are reporting 40-50cm, Hakkaisan are reporting 30cm and Ishiuchi are reporting 10cm. Maiko don't seem to have a number for us this morning at time of posting. There's a mix of cloud and some blue sky above the region this morning though forecasts say that snow clouds should persist with some more possibly heavy snow later on tomorrow. So perhaps this morning is a time to enjoy the lull in the snowfall. All ski areas should be opening as planned this morning. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. So the snow did start yesterday morning and by this morning there's 38cm of it on the measuring point (that's from yesterday early morning). And it's snowing now and due to continue through the day today. Here's what the ski areas are reporting this morning: Kagura: 50cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 30cm Hakkaisan: 30cm (good to see them reporting fresh snowfall lately!) Maiko Snow Resort: 10-30cm So there's a good 30cm, and probably quite a bit more on the mountains in places. There is a bit of a wind this morning which is going to stop the Kagura Area of Kagura from opening (Mitsumata is open) and also the top area of Yuzawa Kogen. The Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is closed due to the large amounts of snow (!). In good news, the Tashiro Area of Kagura will be re-opening from tomorrow (22nd January). The forecast says there's a chance of sunshine and calm conditions tomorrow morning. Or at least that this snow storm will have passed. Snow conditions should be great. ----- A period of 'quasi state of emergency' starts today in Niigata Prefecture due to rising covid case numbers. What does that actually mean? Well, most people probably don't really know (count me in). It seems to allow governors to ask restaurants and bars to close early and stop or limit the serving of alcohol, and things like that. So perhaps it will be potentially affecting those kind of businesses rather than ski areas directly. As far as we can tell, as of this morning, there does not seem to be any changes to ski area operations due to this. Whether such a thing affects the number of people coming out to ski... we'll just have to see.
