Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 14cm
Snowfall at base this seas 480cm

Posted on Saturday 8th January 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here.

Good morning from Yuzawa.

Another 5cm of snow overnight after 9cm during the day, so 14cm to add to the report. Ski areas are reporting 10-15cm.

Today is the start of a three day long weekend because Monday is a national holiday in Japan. It is usually one of the really busy times of the peak season, so we can expect ski areas to be busy, especially today and tomorrow. There was some light snow falling earlier on but it has stopped now and we are expecting the clouds to clear and the sun to appear. Possibly some light snow later tomorrow but nothing major so it should be a generally calm weekend.

The good news from GALA Yuzawa is that part of the South Area is now open. That area normally offers some good ungroomed course areas. For now just the main Eliza course is available.

Unfortunately, there's also some covid-19 news that needs to be reported. GALA Yuzawa have announced that one member of staff in the rental area has been confirmed as having it and as such they are making various changes for the weekend. As far as we can tell all of the ski lifts and courses should be open as normal; it's more of a staffing issue for related facilities, particularly the rental facility. Sigh. Let's hope there's not going to be more of that kind of thing to have to report...

Lunchtime update: GALA Yuzawa have confirmed that all related staff have had negative tests and that the ski area will be open as normal tomorrow.
