  • Yuzawa Now: Friday 6th December 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 18cm Posted on Friday 6th December 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I was perhaps slightly over generous with my 1cm of snowfall added to the report yesterday. What was there quickly disappeared from lower areas, and we were rained on later in the day, but this morning we have a fresh layer of snow on the ground and everywhere is once again looking white. I am measuring just over 5cm. Kagura resort are this morning reporting 10-15cm of fresh snowfall. No word on expanded operations for the weekend at Kagura, though I would think that is surely a possibility. I will update this report later on today if I hear anything so do check back this evening. Naeba is also going to be part opening from tomorrow and we'll be updating the Naeba Now report later today. I'm pretty sure Joetsu Kokusai will not be opening tomorrow (they had a provisional planned opening of 7th December), so they'll be on standby. The weekly forecast doesn't seem to be showing as much snow potential as it was a few days ago, with a bit of a milder spell currently due early to mid next week. (That would definitely be a 'booooo!') For now, it's snowing! --- Kagura is currently part open: - Mitsumata Ropeway (8:00am-5:00pm, last one up a 3:30pm) - Mitsumata Number 1 quad (8:00am-4:00pm) - Mitsumata Number 2 romance pair (8:15am-4:30pm) - Kagura Gondola (8:15am-4:00pm, last one up at 3:00pm) - Kagura Number 1 quad (8:30am-3:30pm) 1500m of the main Kagura course is available for skiing/snowboarding. The Mitsumata Area is used as a connecting course. Other ski resorts in the region are closed as we wait for snow. --- Planned opening dates - subject to change of course depending on weather/snow conditions. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After some rain yesterday (really heavy at times) we have had a bit of snowfall down to town overnight. Not as much as we'd like, just a few cm but more as you get higher up. Kagura are reporting 15cm of fresh snowfall and as you drive up to the Mitsumata Ropeway the amount on the ground gradually increases, getting less again as you continue on over to Naeba. OK, so here is the ski resort news as we have it: Kagura - Tashiro The Tashiro area of Kagura will open as planned from tomorrow. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 23cm Posted on Friday 20th December 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. This morning it is raining down in town; Kagura is reporting 2cm of snow and snow falling higher up. NASPA Ski Garden was originally planning to open from today and as you can see below there is a large number of ski resorts around Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma that were planning on being open from tomorrow. Those openings are not going to be possible. They are all now waiting. As we all are. The lack of snow is of course worrying - the prospect of not being able to open for Christmas is a real blow. So everyone involved is looking to the forecasts for good news. But we can't do anything about it other than wait and hope. After today, around Monday is still looking like the best chance for some decent snowfall. A nice Christmas gift would be excellent timing. --- Currently part open: GALA Yuzawa - GALA Yuzawa is open for sightseeing, sledding and kanjiki (snow shoe) tours. - It is not open for skiing/snowboarding yet. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Snow down to town level this morning.... just about. Kagura are reporting 15cm of fresh snowfall; Naeba are reporting 10-15cm; there's just a few cm of so down to town areas. (Just for the record. It was rain last night so glad that it turned into snow. I've totally had my fill of rain for this year. It's starting to get really annoying.) We are forecast sunshine tomorrow and milder temperatures again, but you all want really promising news and so: HEAVY snowfall looks due for Friday. If Nature co-operates and the forecasts are right, it should be enough for ski resorts to open up. For the moment and as far as I can tell, resort operations remain unchanged this morning. We will be checking once this report goes up and will update if there is anything to add. --- Currently open: GALA Yuzawa - GALA Yuzawa is open - but only for sightseeing, sledding and kanjiki (snow shoe) tours - It is not open for skiing/snowboarding yet Kagura - A large part of Kagura is now open - The Mitsumata and Tashiro Ropeways are now both operating - The Kagura Area and Tashiro Area lift/course connection is now open - Access to the main Kagura Area is now available from both the Mitsumata Area and Tashiro Area - The Mitsumata Area course is used as a connecting area Naeba - Part open - Lower base slope and top Takenokodaira run open - Prince Number 2 Gondola and three lifts operating --- Other planned opening dates - subject to change of course depending on weather/snow conditions. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa and Happy Christmas! We would all prefer much more snow, of course, but what can you do! I promise to be chirpy and cheerful this morning! It was trying to snow at times during the day yesterday down in town (more successfully snowing higher up and I noticed over at Naeba too), though it never really got going so while there was probably a few more cm at higher elevations there is none to report at town base. It is a beautiful clear and sunny Christmas morning. There is layer of frost on the car windscreen and a moderate southerly wind. Just taking a moment to take in the beauty of our mountains. Good news this morning is that GALA Yuzawa is opening their Melody and Entertainment courses this morning - so you can ski and snowboard at GALA again now. They are reporting 30cm of snow; so it's not deep and there may be bushes. But it's open and available! Yuzawa Kogen is operating the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway and they have a sledding play area open but note that there are no skiing or snowboarding courses open there yet. Have yourself a merry day wherever you may be. --- Currently open: GALA Yuzawa - GALA Yuzawa is part open - The Gondola, Phaeton pair lift and Sociable quad lift are operating - The Melody and Entertainment courses are open for skiing and snowboarding - The sledding area will also be open Kagura - A large part of Kagura is now open - The Mitsumata and Tashiro Ropeways are now both operating - The Kagura Area and Tashiro Area lift/course connection is now open - Access to the main Kagura Area is now available from both the Mitsumata Area and Tashiro Area Naeba - Part open - Lower base slope and top Takenokodaira run open - Prince Number 2 Gondola and three lifts operating Yuzawa Kogen - The Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway is operating and a sledding area is open - Yuzawa Kogen is not yet open for skiing or snowboarding --- Other planned opening dates - subject to change of course depending on weather/snow conditions. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 37cm Posted on Saturday 28th December 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Updated at 10:30am; again at 12:30pm Good morning from Yuzawa. Hope you saw the update I made yesterday afternoon - if you didn't, do go back and check. Information is not complete yet this morning, so I'll post an initial report now and update it later on when more information is available. So, what's the deal this morning? I am very happy to report we have snow on the ground and it is still snowing. Perhaps not as much as we hoped for (I suppose that was never really going to happen was it... we want 2m!). Around 10cm or so on the ground around town base areas and 20+cm seem to be being reported by ski resorts. The Tashiro Area of the Kagura resort is reporting 40cm of fresh snowfall. GALA Yuzawa is reporting 20cm of fresh snowfall at the top Gondola station and from today has 4 courses open in the Chuo Area and might also open part of the Northern Area. Kandatsu Snow Resort and Yuzawa Kogen are part open sometime this morning. Yuzawa Nakazato is also part open from this morning. Maiko Snow Resort and Iwappara have announced that there's not enough to open today, but don't rule out opening tomorrow if there is snowfall during the day today. Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 5-10cm of fresh snowfall at base areas and 20-25cm on upper areas but not enough to open. The Kids Garden at NASPA Ski Garden is open, but the ski lifts aren't moving yet. But it does appear that NASPA Ski Garden will be part open from tomorrow (Sunday). They plan to have two lifts operating and two courses open. --- Snow is still falling as of 10:15am and due to ease off by the end of the day. (Snowfall and weather conditions noted above remain as they were for my original report). As I mentioned before the ski resorts will get their lifts moving and courses open as quickly as they can so there may be changes even within today. I'll do another full scan and update information in the report tomorrow morning. --- Currently at least part open: GALA Yuzawa - GALA Yuzawa is now open for skiing and snowboarding - The Gondola is operating - Phaeton pair, Sociable quad and Barouche quad lifts are operating - 4 courses in the Central Area are opening from this morning - Part of the Northern Area may also open, depending on conditions Kagura - The Kagura resort is mostly open - Both the Mitsumata Ropeway and Tashiro Ropeway bases ropeways are operating Kandatsu Snow Resort - Part open from this morning - A and C lifts plan to be operating Naeba - Part open - You can now ride down from top to base (from 10:00am today) - Details on Naeba Now report here Yuzawa Kogen - Park open - Yuzawa Ropeway operating - Cosmos lift, Summit Panorama lifts also operating Yuzawa Nakazato - Part open - Number 2 and 3 Romance pair lifts operating - Joyful course and Number 3 romance course open --- Other planned opening dates - subject to change depending on weather/snow conditions. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Updated at 10:30am Good morning from Yuzawa. The snow clouds have moved on for the time being, leaving us with just a few more cm from yesterday (even though it was snowing for large parts of the day). No fresh snowfall since then overnight as far as I can tell. This morning we have clear skies above the region. It is a beautiful morning. The mountains and valleys just look amazing with a fresh coating of snow, don't they... I didn't get to enjoy the snow yesterday myself, but hearing some good reports from Tashiro and Kagura; they were reporting 40cm of fresh up at Tashiro with around 20cm down to Mitsumata. Today marks the beginning of the season for NASPA Ski Garden, Iwappara, Joetsu Kokusai and Maiko Snow Resort - all of which are going to be part open from this morning. It doesn't look like Ishiuchi Maruyama are going to be able to open just yet. The snowfall through yesterday brought with it something of a collective sigh of relief, but we still need much more and we have yet to see one of our full-on impressive snow storms. Forecasts for the coming week are still looking good with more snow on the way from Tuesday onwards, so fingers crossed we will get a decent amount from that lot so everywhere can fully open. For the moment, most of the Kagura resort is of course open, and operations at the other ski resorts that are open is limited - more so at some than others. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 31st December 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 39cm Posted on Tuesday 31st December 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Updated at 9:30am Good morning from Yuzawa. It is a mix of cloud and clearer skies this morning. Forecast winds caused GALA Yuzawa and Yuzawa Kogen to be closed yesterday - both of those resorts are open again this morning, but sadly Maiko Snow Resort have said that they will not be opening today due to wind. And unfortunately NASPA Ski Garden has also announced that it will not be able to open today; the southerly winds yesterday were not kind to the snow there. More snow needed. I believe all the information below is correct but with quickly changing weather conditions, things might change during the day. Stronger winds might affect some lifts. The forecast is still looking promising a run of days of snowfall - if correct, starting from this afternoon (with maybe a bit of rain before it starts). Fingers crossed everyone. --- I do not want to dwell on how this season has been very slow to get going; I can't remember us having so little snow at New Year. The numbers are pretty stark. This season in these reports we have observed just 39cm of snowfall in town since the beginning of the season. At the same point of the season in previous seasons, that number was 255cm, 291cm, 146cm, 92cm, 559cm, 136cm and 225cm. All of these numbers and archive reports can be found at the bottom of this report if you want to look back at any time. We can only hope that January will see things change and we'll get the large amounts of snowfall that we expect here. For example, last January we observed an impressive 523cm of snowfall. We are used to lots of heavy snowfall in this area. It just doesn't feel right that it isn't happening yet. But as I have said before, things can and often do change quickly. We need some of that. Coming this week? Let's hope so! So I really do hope to be able to bring much better news tomorrow. Have a fine last day of the year and see you in 2020. --- Currently open: GALA Yuzawa - Part open - The Gondola is operating - Phaeton pair, Coach pair Sociable quad, Barouche quad, Victoria quad lifts are operating - Most of the Central Area (Melody, Entertainment, Gigi, Grenoble courses) and three courses in the Northern Area (Swan, Broadway, Roman Holiday courses) are open - Take the Gondola back down at the end of the day (Falcon downhill course not yet available) Iwappara - Part open - Number 2 and 3 pair lifts, Number 1 romance lift and summit quad are operating - 7 courses open Joetsu Kokusai - Part open - 6 lifts operating - 4 courses open (1 in front of hotel and 3 in the Panorama area) Kagura - All areas are open with most courses now available - Both the Mitsumata Ropeway and Tashiro Ropeway bases ropeways are operating - The lift/course connection between Tashiro Area and Kagura Area is available - The Dragondola from Naeba is operating Kandatsu Snow Resort - Part open - A, B and C lifts are operating and 5 courses open Maiko Snow Resort - Closed today due to forecast wind Muica Snow Resort - Part open - Number 1 and 2 pair lifts operating Muikamachi Hakkaisan - Part open - Ropeway and Number 3 lifts operating - Part of upper area open Naeba - Part open - You can now ride down from top to base - The Dragondola now operating - Details on Naeba Now report here NASPA Ski Garden - Closed today due to snow conditions Yuzawa Kogen - Park open - Yuzawa Ropeway operating - Cosmos lift, Summit Panorama lifts also operating Yuzawa Nakazato - Part open - Number 2, 3, 4 and 5 Romance pair lifts operating Yuzawa Park - Part open - Number 7 lift operating --- Other resorts As soon as there is enough snow - still checking - Chateau Shiozawa - Hakkai Sanroku - Ishiuchi Hanaoka - Ishiuchi Maruyama - Itsukamachi - Mt Granview - Nakazato Snow Wood Yuzawa Now 2019-2020 season Data as of Tuesday 31st December 2019 Total snowfall at base so far 39cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 8 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 12cm (30th November and 28th December) November 2019 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2019 snowfall 27cm reported on 7 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 5th January 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 83cm Posted on Sunday 5th January 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Light snow most of the day yesterday, with even some blue sky appearing for a short while before it got dark, but then the snow clouds moved back in and we have a fairly decent amount of fresh snowfall this morning. The highest Kagura resort is reporting another 30cm, so with the snow from yesterday conditions should be excellent up there. Yuzawa Kogen are also reporting 30cm of fresh snowfall on their upper slopes. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 10-25cm of fresh snowfall and Ishiuchi Maruyama is reporting 20cm. We are measuring 16cm at town level. So while the snow isn't uniformly deep yet, conditions should be pretty good in most areas this morning. Light snow is forecast through the day today, though as of 8:30am it isn't snowing in town though still higher up. Might just be a lull... --- Just to be clearer on one point. • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 4th January 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 68cm Posted on Saturday 4th January 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Updated at 10:15am Good morning from Yuzawa. I really, really like to be able to report snowfall! And this morning Kagura reporting 'over 40cm' sounds great to me. Naeba seems to be saying a similar number on mountain. That sounds more like what we expect to be getting here in Yuzawa. There has not been as much further down and out into the valley to the north, with resorts reporting around 10cm or so at base areas. I think that is fairly representative. The fresh snowfall on the mountains appears to be allowing more lifts and courses to open. More of Iwappara, Ishiuchi Maruyama and Joetsu Kokusai to the north are opening up this morning; most of GALA Yuzawa is now open apart from the Southern Area. Other good news is that today the link up between Yuzawa Kogen, GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama is also available - with a shared lift ticket and lift/course connections. (Note the Ropeway connecting Yuzawa Kogen and GALA Yuzawa does not appear to be operating yet). Light snowfall is due to be falling during the day today, with heaving snow again overnight. Fingers crossed everyone.
