The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday while it did not feel windy early on, it did actually get pretty blowy - so we could understand why some resorts and lifts were closed. Ishiuchi seemed to cancel their nighta as well. Mild too. Happily... It is good to see some fresh snow on the ground this morning. Not a huge amount and certainly not enough to reset the mountain yet, but it is a start and we do have fairly regular snow on the forecast into the weekend and beyond. I am measuring 5cm of fresh snowfall here in town so hopefully there might be a bit more than that higher up. I see Maiko are reporting 5cm too. It is colder and should remain bobbing about around 0C and there is less wind too. As far as I can tell, all of the ski resorts in the region plan to be opening as normal this morning including GALA Yuzawa and Tashiro. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It is a beauty of a morning too, despite the forecasts showing cloud and snow. Perhaps it will cloud over quickly today but for now there are lovely blue skies over Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma. 12cm of snowfall measured yesterday evening with just a sprinkling overnight. Wonder when it will start snowing again? The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We enjoyed some very fine sunny weather during the morning yesterday which was a nice surprise. Clouds gradually started appearing from the early afternoon. It is fairly easy to ignore and forgive the bit of rain last night because this morning there is a nice layer of fresh snow on the ground. I have just measured 21cm of it. Yuzawa Kogen and Maiko Snow Resort are both reporting 20cm of it. Kagura are reporting up to 50cm. That sounds good! (But Kagura do not seem to currently be updating/reporting their official snow depth numbers; not that those numbers are particularly important). It looks like the Tashiro area of Kagura is closed for the day due to forecast strong winds with the Kagura area open up to the Kagura Number 1 romance lift. As far as I can tell, other ski resorts in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma are opening as normal (but we might need to keep an eye on wind conditions). There are some breaks in the cloud above Yuzawa right now but a bank of grey cloud just to the north in Minamiuonuma and snow still falling - as can be seen on the images below. So that potential break is quite probably temporary. Snow is forecast for the day and into tomorrow. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We ended up getting some really good snowfall during the day in Yuzawa yesterday, coming down hard at times. This morning both Kagura and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 30cm of fresh. I have just measured 34cm so that is what goes on the report. Changeable conditions early this morning with some fast moving cloud, light snow falling in places and blue sky and sunshine in others. It will be interesting to see if we can get clearer skies for the day, but it may just end up with cloud and light snow. Temperatures are forecast to be on the milder side today and tomorrow. There is even some chance of rain later tomorrow - but that is before it gets colder again and more snow is due to move in. The one thing that is more certain is that it should be very nice snow conditions on the mountains this morning. Less wind and resorts should be opening as normal. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Again we had some rather wet stuff falling later in the day yesterday but we can quickly forget that with a lot of fresh snow piled up on the ground this morning. I have just measured 35cm of it as if 8:45am. Kagura are reporting about 50cm of fresh snowfall. Maiko are reporting 40+cm. This is proper snow country like Yuzawa snowfall. The sudden heavy snow and winds higher up means that the Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed for the day (Kagura open up until the Kagura Number 1 romance lift for the moment). The Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is also closed this morning as they cope with this new snowfall. As far as I can tell other ski resorts are opening but there may be some lifts operating at reduced speed or delayed. There's fresh snowfall on the forecast for large parts of this week so looks like we are in for regular top-ups. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Loads of snow! Yesterday evening there was a bit of a break in the snow falling and I went out to measure 33cm of snowfall since my morning report. Wiped the snow off and this morning there's another 30cm on there. So that's an impressive 63cm to report to you this morning. And it is still snowing. The Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is back open again this morning and it looks like all of Kagura is open too (and other ski resorts of course). There may be some late opening lifts though as they cope with all this snow. There seems to be a chance of some sunshine tomorrow. Take care out there. ----- Oh yes, Kagura are reporting 30-40cm 'until this morning'. And Maiko are reporting 40+cm. Personally I think it'd be cool if they were more specific about the numbers they put out - is it since yesterday morning, or since last night, or since when? But there you go! And we are kind of pleased that our way of keeping a measured record every day through the season is kind of unique (even if it is in town rather than on the ski resorts). On some days the snow seems to build up quickly almost without you noticing and on others it snows and you are puzzled when there's not as much as you thought. Yesterday was one of the latter - I was surprised that there was only 9cm to clear off the measuring point at 5pm. This morning there was around another 2cm on there, so 11cm in total to report since yesterday morning. This morning has started off with fine mostly clear skies and some sun shining down on Yuzawa but it is already looking like clouds might be starting to move in. Forecasts have us down for some spells of fine sunny weather this morning but just how long it will last remains to be seen. It has been a fairly chilly start to the day but temps are forecast to rise somewhat today - maybe as high as around +6C this afternoon - but it is due to be snowing again by tonight and through tomorrow and it should be once again getting colder. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was a lovely morning yesterday. There were sunny and blue skies with a moderate wind at times and in places but not enough to mess up lift operations. The clouds kept away from Yuzawa for the most part in the morning and a bit longer with more gradually turning up in the afternoon. Rather mild. Evening, it got a little wet before snow started and this morning there's a nice new layer of fresh snow on the ground once again. This morning Kagura are reporting 40cm of fresh snowfall and Maiko are reporting just 10cm, which seems a bit low. We have measured 22cm of fresh snowfall this morning in Yuzawa and 30cm a little to the north in Shiozawa town area. Wind conditions are preventing Tashiro Area of Kagura from opening this morning. It also seems that the top lift at Yuzawa Kogen is closed, but the Kogen area (including the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway) of that resort is otherwise open as normal. And so is GALA Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The snow keeps on coming in - and it doesn't look like it is going to give up and clear up anytime soon with some big numbers expected later tomorrow into Sunday. Keep that in mind if you are planning on being here over the weekend. Light snow, moderate in places, at the moment; and that is what is generally expected for today, perhaps easing off at times particularly this afternoon. Kagura are reporting 20-30cm of fresh snow 'since yesterday' and Maiko are reporting 10cm 'since yesterday evening' (which again seems curiously low). I have measured more than what those resorts are - 9cm yesterday evening and another 24cm this morning. So that makes 33cm since my report yesterday. Why the differences? It's a good question but... I don't have a clear answer and there is probably some 'case by case' going on too. Some may suggest that some ski resorts go a bit easy on the numbers once there is generally lots of snow - and are much keener to report larger numbers at the beginning and end of a season. Some may say it's just nature not depositing the snow in fixed amounts and in a uniform manner. I personally really wish that more ski resorts would report fresh snowfall numbers each day, but the fact is that most of them don't and choose to just report that snow depth number. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday we enjoyed a bit of a break in the clouds during the daytime (after snow in the morning), but it was back to snow overnight. I had brushed away 2cm of snow from the morning mid afternoon, and have just moved another 15cm this morning, giving me 17cm to put on the report this morning from town base. And the 'resorts that report' are saying 5-10cm (Kagura) and 10cm (Maiko). Interesting. It is snowing now with heavy snow still due tonight - indeed, it's forecast for the snow to increase as the day goes on today. Wind doesn't look like it should be a problem so all ski resorts appear to be opening as planned. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Lots more snow to report this morning after a day of snow and heavy snowfall at times in the afternoon. Yesterday evening I cleared 16cm of snow off the measuring point and this morning there is an additional 20cm on there. So a total of 36cm. That is actually not as much as we were perhaps expecting, but it's still a nice number to be able to report of course. Kagura are reporting 40cm of fresh snowfall and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 25cm. Snow continues to fall this morning and it is forecast to continue through the day, varying from light at times to heavier at others, and easing off by evening. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa and welcome to the start of another week. It was snowing for much of yesterday and I cleared away 10cm of snow early evening - there's another 1cm there this morning, so there's 11cm to include in my report this morning. No cm of fresh snow is being reported by Kagura or Maiko; presumably meaning none overnight, because there was definitely snow falling during the day yesterday! The forecasts were telling us that we might get some sunshine this morning but as of 7:30am it is cloudy and overcast. There's always the chance that those clouds might clear up for a while, of course. It is currently -2C but a rather mild day is likely, perhaps warming up to as much as 5-6C. (We have enjoyed a lot of snow this month - almost 5m in town - which is great, but we could do without warmer conditions before the snow comes each time, which seems to be something of a pattern). Talking of which - heavy snow due once again tonight and a day of snow tomorrow.
